I caught up with director-author Blue Blake this week. That's right--"author." Mr. Blake was woozy from having burned the candle at both ends for weeks to finish his autobiography, titled Out of the Blue: Confessions of an Unlikely Porn Star.

It will be published by Running Press, a division of Perseus Press, on August 25, 2008. "It comes out in England, Canada, North America, Australia and New Zealand on the same day," he told me. "You can tell everybody it's all signed, sealed and delivered. I finished the book [this week]. So I'm slowly decompressing and returning to the real world. Perseus [will] hire a publicist for me and we go pretty much full bore in January."

Until then, Mr. Blake is flacking THE MUSCLE PIT starring newcomer BamBam Micelli (great stage name) with Brad Rock and Robert Van Damme DP'ing Josh Weston. Next on the agenda is MUSCLE PENITENTIARY 2 now that the book is finally topped off.

FOLSOM STREET POSTER CONTROVERSY

San Francisco's Folsom Street Fair unspools this weekend with an extra helping of controversy. Their poster depicting various Folsom attendees displayed in imitation of Leonardo da Vinci's famed "Last Supper" has twisted the panties of the religious right. Naturally, Fox News has jumped on board, A spokesman for Concerned Women for America declared Folsom as "nothing short of a mini Sodom and Gomorrah dressed up as a gay pride event."

There's a gay porn tie-in here: Titan Media Exclusives Tober Brandt (middle- right) and Dean Flynn (far left) are pictured, and that's NakedSword.com's one-and-only Sister Roma shown middle-left.

As GayPornBlog.com notes, "Kudos to Sister Roma for being on Fox News twice in one year. She is officially [our] hero." (A photo of a fully made-up Roma was flashed repeatedly onscreen during various Fox News broadcasts following the mini-uproar over the COLT Studio 40th anniversary shindig last spring.)

The Miller Brewing Company has demanded Folsom organizers remove their company logo from the poster (they have not withdrawn their sponsorship). Their statement: "While Miller has supported the Folsom Street Fair for several years, we take exception to the poster the organizing committee developed this year. We understand some individuals may find the imagery offensive and we have asked the organizers to remove our logo from the poster effective immediately."

Festival organizers have responded in part by saying, "There was no intention to be particularly pro-religion or anti-religion with this poster; the image is intended only to be reminiscent of the 'Last Supper' painting. We hope that people will enjoy the artistry for what it is - nothing more or less. Many people choose to speculate on deeper meanings."

Another dispatch from the Dept. of WEHT: Aahhh...Ken Ryker. That gorgeous slab of blond tanned beef. The eternal star. UPDATED: From the Dept. of WEHT ("Whatever Happened To") comes an update about the lovely and talented Tony Donovan, a fan favorite who has been out of circulation for about five years. You remember babyfaced Tony D., whose surname was borrowed from Chad Donovan, and although they look nothing alike, the Donovans did share one notable quality: about 20 inches of cock between them. Young Master Donovan worked between 1998 and 2002, with about 18 or so films on his resume, and to date he is the only performer to snag two Best Actor GAYVN statues (for 2000's ECHOES and 2001's CARNAL INTENTIONS, both Men of Odyssey pictures).

Tony Donovan's Wikipedia entry states that he died of a drug overdose in 2003; considering what gay adult has been through the past year, you can imagine my shock when I came across that bit of info. [Update: The entry has now been changed.] I've always been fond of the young buck and in 2002 when I was editor of Unzipped Monthly we got him for one of his last, and best, photo shoots together with a revealing interview. I'm happy to report that Tony Donovan is not dead. According to Men of Odyssey's Bob East, he's alive and well, working a regular 9-to-5'er and in a relationship. No plans to come back to XXX; that's apparently behind him for good.

"LINK: THE EVOLUTION" PREMIERE

Saturday night, September 29, was the premiere of LINK: THE EVOLUTION (All Worlds Video/Channel 1 Releasing) at The Faultline in Silverlake. God knows we all needed an opportunity to unwind given the emotional roller coaster of the past couple of weeks for gay adult entertainment. It was a crisp, cool night and the air was actually breathable for a change (the Faultline has an open-air patio/bar) thanks to several days of rain this week.

I got to the bar to find the door locked and was told they weren't letting anyone inside. (Good thing it wasn't raining.) People were just milling around the parking lot wondering what to do, so I took the opportunity to catch up and gossip with reviewer Leo Buck and performers Dominik Rider, Tyler Saint and Scott Spears.

Eventually the doors opened. It quickly turned into old home week for me: Reviewer Mickey Skee and his partner reviewer/producer John Rex, director Jim Steel and Sharon Kane (who turns up in a nonsex role in BOTTOM OF THE 9TH: LITTLE BIG LEAGUE 3) were among those I connected with at the bar. A fabulously mohawked Chi Chi LaRue soon joined us and we reminisced about the old days.

Ms. LaRue took over the mic to premiere the moodily lit opening credits of LINK: THE EVOLUTION and revealed a choice tidbit: "My adorable straight nephew from Minnesota did the music!"

Some other interesting news came as Ms. LaRue explained how LINK: THE EVOLUTION was meant to re-introduce All Worlds Video to the marketplace. With the recent purchase of Catalina Video, a similar reinvention is planned for 2008. "Catalina was where I began," she said. "My first job was selling POWERTOOL. And now I own it. Fierce!" And now the big scoop...look for POWERTOOL 3 one year from now. "We're looking for a guy who has never done [any porn] before, for anyone," Ms. LaRue said. "He has to have the face, the body, the cock. We're looking for a brand-new star, just like Jeff Stryker twenty years ago."

Later it was time to bring on the go-go boys: Tyler Saint (cut like a Greek statue), Cole Ryder (furry-hot), Blake Riley (totally adorable) and Steve Cruz, a compact cub exuding sexual heat and vibrant energy. Backed by choice tunes, thanks to Ms. LaRue's undeniable talent as a DJ, Cruz had the crowd cheering and whooping.

I must have really needed to let my hair down because I completely forgot to write down the names of the many folks I chatted up or spotted across the room, so apologies for not mentioning a whole bunch of people. But among those seen schmoozing were Bobby Trendy in boy drag; performers Chad Hunt, Christian Owen (newly shorn) and Lex Sabre; reviewer Martyn Dunn; Gay Chicago mag's Mark T. Nagel; Channel 1 Releasing's Tony Adonis, Jefferson and Doug Jeffries; and, just for good measure, random Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

UPDATE II: Danny Roddick, Tony Bishop

The sad story of 31-year-old performer Danny Roddick's passing last week continues to unfold. On various blogs, associates of Mr. Roddick are venting their anger over how they perceive their friend was treated by the studios that employed him, including Athletic Model Guild, via their AMG Brasil label, and COLT Studio, where he had been signed as an exclusive to their Buckshot Productions line. More on that in a moment.

AMG Brasil had already planned to make a donation to the World Wildlife Fund as they prep for the release of AMAZôNIA: CAPTURE and RELEASE, which topline Mr. Roddick. Following the news of his passing, they decided to make those donations in Mr. Roddick's name.

I spoke with COLT Studio Group president John Rutherford this week about the perception by some of Mr. Roddick's fans and friends that COLT's had been a bit...cold, I suppose, is the word, in their announcement of the death of one of their top stars. "Some of Danny's loved ones have chosen to deal with their loss in their own way," Mr. Rutherford told me. "We are not putting out a press release, but we are making notes on our blogs, website and online store."

They are also donating a portion of the proceeds from the sales of Mr. Roddick's films to New Leaf, a nonprofit counseling center in San Francisco. "COLT Studio Group and its COLT team here are a tight family and Danny was a part of our family," they announced on their new blog. Per the studio, New Leaf is "the only comprehensive mental health, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and social support organization in San Francisco geared specifically for the LGBT communities."

But just this morning, performer Tony Bishop sent around a passionately worded email decrying what he calls "the often reckless behavior and overreaching demands of the gay adult film studios." Mr. Bishop, who notes that he is now retired, makes the claim that studios "[prey on] the unsuspecting, overly optimistic, insecure, emotionally distressed young men who get into the gay adult film industry--chattel, essentially subjugated to indentured servitude for the explicit gain of the studio."

Mr. Bishop goes on to ask, "How many more deaths is it going to take before the studios wake up and do something... And by do something, I mean do something constructive to help curb this awesome and grotesque trend. Not, in Danny's case, a one-off contribution to a charitable organization... In an industry worth billions of dollars, why are the studios not doing more? ...We put our flesh, blood, tears, physical and mental health, personal relationships, overall well being on the line for the studios because you can't work if you won't put it all on the line for them...

"And at the end of the day we are a more fragile people. We too have hearts, minds and emotions. So give something back. Back [to] the public, back to our communities, be a corporate citizen for a change. Studios need to wake up and face the facts that with a few preemptive measures on their part, tragedies like Danny's can be avoided. And should be avoided! There is no reason it can not be."

Mr. Bishop suggests addressing substance abuse (presumably via public service announcements) as well as "actively sponsoring public health and mental health events and organizations that specifically help performers in the sex trade industry" and says "other organizations, like the one COLT has conceded to donating proceeds from some of Danny's films, are not good enough."

He closes his letter by exhorting the gay adult industry to "stop spending [money] on just sponsoring or throwing the next big circuit party--encouraging more abuse. Stop playing with people's lives and do something that will actually help our community so tragedies like Danny's may be avoided altogether."

Tony Bishop's pain is clear. No one can dispute that. And I agree wholeheartedly about one thing: Organizations such as Sharon Mitchell's Adult Industry Medical often go begging for funds and that is a goddamn shame. Yes, profit margins are shrinking. Everyone's hurting, yadda yadda. That is no excuse. We could do more.

But to what extent are we our brother's keeper? I don't know the specifics of Danny Roddick's professional relationship with COLT Studio and therefore I cannot comment about what, if anything, could have been done to prevent his death. It's worth asking about the level of responsibility that gay adult studios and producers bear in protecting the physical and mental health of their performers. But how much monitoring can they actually do? At what point does personal responsibility take over? Share your thoughts and let's talk about it.

DANNY RODDICK UPDATE

GayPornLand continues to recover from the sad and shocking news of the death of performer Danny Roddick. He was just 31 years old. I did some investigating and the exact cause of death is being withheld pending further investigation. There's been a lot of speculation around the internets as to how and why Mr. Roddick passed and why the cause has not been announced. There is no conspiracy, people. Just routine investigation.

Danny Roddick debuted two years ago together with his then-boyfriend, Alex Chandler, who was kind enough to leave a note in the comments section to our original story. Click here to read the full text as well as notes of condolence left by Mr. Roddick's peers. "At this time we are all numb and dealing with the shock of this tragedy," Mr. Chandler wrote. "Nothing can prepare you for this. He was loved by so many. He was my rock... For now, we need to sit back and remember all of the brightness he brought to so many of the people he touched."

RIP: DANNY RODDICK

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. -- COLT Studio announced on their blog this morning that performer Danny Roddick has died. He passed September 13 and details are sketchy for the moment. We are working this morning on confirming them. In a statement, COLT Studio Group President John Rutherford said, "We are devastated and saddened by this tragedy. We have watched Danny grow up and everyone here at COLT Studio Group extends our most heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. He will be missed."

Mr. Roddick toplines three highly anticipated upcoming films, BROTHERHOOD for Buckshot Productions/COLT, plus AMAZôNIA: CAPTURE and RELEASE for AMG Brasil.

"The loss of anyone so young and talented and especially a sweet and fragile individual is heartbreaking, but for someone who was rapidly approaching the peak of his career it is doubly painful," said his BROTHERHOOD director Jerry Douglas, and AMG Brasil's Dennis Bell notes simply, "I had the pleasure of working with Danny recently and will miss him greatly."

COLT's Kristofer Weston describes Danny Roddick as "one of the most caring and sensitive people I've ever had the privilege of working with on set. A truly beautiful man inside and out and I'm honored to have called him a friend."

Danny Roddick debuted in 2005 as one half of a popular "porn power couple" with Alex Chandler. He appeared in BIG RIG: EXTENDED CAB EDITION, BOOT BLACK BLUES, HARD STUDIES and HOSTILE for the COLT Studio Group.

WHAT ARE THE BIG MOVIES OF 2007?

As we cruise into mid-September, it's time to start looking at potential awards contenders. The 2008 GAYVN Awards will unspool in February 2008, while the 17th Annual Grabby Awards are set for May 2008.

I called and emailed around, polled my peers and the idea seems to be that the Best Picture field is a bit slim, according to my decidedly unscientific research. I'm not sure about that; we've got lots to pick through, but although many of 'em are clear contenders for specific categories, it's hard to pinpoint whether they'll earn a Best Picture slot.

There is no one big movie dominating the landscape; think Rascal Video's eventual winner a couple years back, WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS 1-2 or Lucas Entertainment's back-to-back Best Picture GAYVN winners, DANGEROUS LIAISONS and MICHAEL LUCAS' LA DOLCE VITA.

Chi Chi LaRue does have LINK: THE EVOLUTION now in release, but it's a plotless raunchfest and seems to be a lock for Best All-Sex Video. But what about Best Picture? Similarly, Michael Lucas is flacking THE INTERN, which is more along the lines of a sex comedy. The reviews aren't in yet, but will Lucas Entertainment's momentum be enough to propel it from the "Best Sex Comedy" ghetto?

Raging Stallion Studios has never won the GAYVN or Grabby for Best Picture, but this could be their year. MIRAGE was a giant hit and earned ecstatic reviews: "Dazzlingly erotic, a peerless Egyptian-themed epic," raved ManNet.com. "Porn has rarely, if ever, looked better," purred Adult Video News. "This is a leading awards contender for 2008." But wait! RSS just wrapped production on the big-budget epic GRUNTS, set for release at year's end. Will they compete against themselves and siphon off votes?

Another company with two potential contenders is Kristen Bjorn's Sarava Productions: Both ROCKS & HARD PLACES 1-2 and EL RANCHO are prime Bjorn porn, and the legendary director is one of the few whose cachet propels his (usually) plotless films out of the "Best All-Sex Video" ghetto. But do you think the controversy over the condomless duo scene in the non-retail version of EL RANCHO will derail his chances?

Buckshot Productions/COLT Studio cleaned up a couple years back with BUCKLEROOS 1-2 and now they've got a new Jerry Douglas production, BROTHERHOOD on tap. We can expect it will figure in the awards derbies.

Titan Media's had a pretty good year and the only question is which of their well-reviewed titles will emerge a Best Picture nominee: BARNSTORM, CAMPUS PIZZA, FOLSOM LEATHER, H20, ROAD TO REDNECK HOLLOW and SHACKED UP are on the menu, for starters.

JUSTICE for Hot House Video was a big contender in 2006 and this year, they've got a variety of all-sex pictures: COMMUNION; FULL THROTTLE; TOUGH STUFF; PACK ATTACK 2: MARCO PARIS and PACK ATTACK 3: C.J. KNIGHT; TRUNKS 4: WHITE HEAT, among others. For sure some of these will be among the nominees for Best All-Sex Video and Best Leather Video. Will they have the oomph to break into the coveted Best Picture slot?

MARK DALTON PAROLE REVOKED

Bad news for Mark Dalton and his slavering fans. The Texas Department of Corrections revoked his parole as of August 30, which means the blond hunk is headed back to prison once he serves out his current 45-day sentence in the Denton County Jail.

This info was provided by Mr. Dalton's agent, David Forest, who sent out a press release updating industryites as to the status of the superstar's legal status. He was arrested May 31 and booked on two misdemeanor counts ("assault causes bodily injury/family violence" and "interference with an emergency call") to which he pleaded no contest. Mr. Dalton was already on probation (stemming from his 2004 arrest on a drug-related charge) when he was arrested at the end of May, thus he's looking at another stint in prison.

In the meantime, his latest blue movie, MARK MEETS ZEB: THE TEXAS TWO-STEP (Zeb Atlas Productions) is selling strongly for Marina Pacific and at TLAvideo.com. His legal travails only seem to make him more popular.

"Rolling Stone" Investigates Kocis Murder, Too

At the same time that Out magazine features a lengthy investigation of the Bryan Kocis murder, for which Harlow Cuadra and partner Joseph Kerekes are currently standing trial, Rolling Stone has done likewise, in the September 20 issue with 50 Cent and Kanye West on the cover.

The lengthy feature (not yet online) is by Peter Wilkinson and is hyperbolically titled "Death of a Porn King." It begins, "Bryan Kocis made millions exploiting teenage boys in gay porn. Did one of them arrange his murder?"

Both stories revel a bit too much for my taste in the lurid aspects of the case. This leaves The Advocate's story about the John Kelso murder, for which Timothy Boham/Marcus Allen is awaiting trial, in the wings. It was scheduled to run last month but was delayed or spiked. Too much gay-porn murder coverage, perhaps?

An interesting, if surreal, aspect of the Kocis murder case is the obsessive sniffing out of every single possible detail by dozens of online "fans," many of whom debate furiously and heatedly over every utterance by Cuadra or Brent Corrigan. The website FreeHarlowCuadra.com has been set up to raise money for Cuadra’s defense and he has drawn the support of A-list porn celebs like Jason Ridge. This level of obsession has not been replicated with Marcus Allen. It's worth examining why.

[Updated with edits] Check out the October 2007 issue of Out magazine with John Barrowman on the cover. One of the headlines reads: "Exclusive: The Murder That Rocked The Porn World."

The article by Michael Joseph Gross examines the Bryan Kocis murder case and includes an interview with Harlow Cuadra, who together with partner Joseph Kerekes, is currently on trial for the murder of Cobra Video's Bryan Kocis.

Just two issues ago, Out ran a story about bareback sex (and one that made no pretense towards objectivity, with nine sources condemning condomless sex in porn and just three arguing the other way). That story briefly sketched the outlines of the Kocis murder and included quotes from ex-Cobra star Brent Corrigan and his partner Grant Roy.

Inside, the current story is titled, "The Case of the Cobra Killer" (bro-ther) and begins: "Last winter, a notorious internet porn producer was brutally murdered. Police say he was the victim of an industry turf war--killed by rival porn players who wanted to make a 'million-dollar' movie with his biggest star. But this crime sits at the center of a much broader web of intrigue. An exclusive investigation uncovers the story..."

TITAN MEDIA RESPONDS TO BAREBACK CONTROVERSY

Titan Media has responded to an item I ran last week about the latest bareback sex controversy to rile up GayPornLand: A condomless duo sex scene between real-life boyfriends Pedro Andreas and Daniel Marvin that appears in the mail-order-only version of EL RANCHO from Kristen Bjorn's Sarava Productions.

I queried Mr. Bjorn himself, who responded with a general statement that has appeared elsewhere on the web: "Yes, in the mail-order version there is a condomless scene between a real-life couple in a long-term relationship of the same HIV status," he said. "There is a warning at the beginning of the film advising people of this special situation. Since most people in this type of relationship have condomless sex, I don’t feel that it is incorrect to allow it in the video. I trust that viewers are intelligent enough to understand the difference between this and a ‘bareback’ film. Sarava Productions doesn’t promote or condone unsafe sex practices." He also acknowledged concerns from industry peers like Titan Media. "While I respect Titan’s politics, we may not see eye-to-eye on this point."

A few days later, I heard from Keith Webb, Titan Media's Vice-President. He made it clear that our interview was not directed to anyone specifically, and instead was meant to speak to the industry at large. His main concern is that directors, producers and studio heads facing a decline in DVD sales may "turn to bareback as the cure [or that] somehow bareback will be the magic bullet to save them. This is simply not the case." Mr. Webb identifies the main culprit for declining revenues as "online piracy and slow transition to digital distribution."

He describes Titan Media as one of the only gay adult companies that "aggressively protects" their content online. (It should be noted that Sarava Productions is another, tirelessly headed up by Mr. Bjorn's longtime aide-de-camp, Barry "The Bear" Gollop.)

Notes Mr. Webb, "We are running a double-digit increase for 2007" and "even our hard product DVD sales are up over last year. It's not bareback that consumers want, it's good content! If you make good content and if you protect it, your sales will be just fine!"

Mr. Webb is concerned that the digital squeeze "may drive people to try desperate things, things that they may well regret in the long run. When I see people in the industry contemplating bareback to try and sell films it just makes me sad. Before going down the bareback path you had damn well better be sure it's the right path."

(For the record, Mr. Gollop asserted last week that there was "no doubt in my mind that greed, money or [publicity]" had anything to do with Mr. Bjorn's decision to include the condomless scene in EL RANCHO, noting that "he has never been someone who was interested in making as much money as he possibly could, cutting corners to save a few bucks, or doing a publicity stunt to get the attention of the industry.")

Mr. Webb acknowledges the willingness of some performers to go condomless onscreen. "There are plenty of coal miners that will go down into the mine without safety equipment if you pay them [enough]," he says. "But, in the end, if they get hurt or killed you are the one that is going to be held responsible. It doesn't matter whether or not they agreed to do it. You paid them to do it and you are liable. People had better think long and hard before they make a decision that will affect the rest of their lives."

He notes that "artistic or freedom of choice issues" are another matter. If those are your reasons for going bareback, "then at least have the balls to stand, be proud of what you do and defend it. If you are going to do bareback because you think you can sell a few extra pieces, then you are a sad excuse for a human being. And you can quote me!"

Okay, look: Last week in another article I made reference to "The Big Eight," a.k.a. the top eight gay adult entertainment companies: Bel Ami, Channel 1 Releasing, COLT Studio, Falcon Studios, Hot House Video, Raging Stallion Studios, Sarava Productions, Titan Media. (They used to be "The Big Ten" until Catalina Video went off the map and was later absorbed by Channel 1, who also gobbled up All Worlds Video.)

I made reference to a number of other companies as "boutique" labels, including Lucas Entertainment, although I wrote this designation was "arguable." Boy, howdy, did I step into it with that innocuous statement.

I caught it from many Michael Lucas fans. I heard from Lucas Entertainment employees. The consensus would seem to be that Lucas Entertainment has earned it's placement among "The Big Nine."

"They won Best Picture two years in a row, which nobody has done in many years" says Rob from West Hollywood, "And I didn't even know that until I read your column! And you can't say that DANGEROUS LIAISONS and MICHAEL LUCAS' LA DOLCE VITA weren't the two most talked-about gay pornos in the last few years."

"I'm a New Yorker and maybe that's why you West Coasters ignore the porn industry on this side of the country," writes Luis of, yes, New York. After weeks of teasing, AMG Brasil has revealed the identity of the American porn actor imported to South American to be cornholed by the biggest, thickest cocks on the continent: Danny Roddick.

The film is set for release in October. "I knew I'd be ripped a new one, no matter which [hung costar] I went with," Mr. Roddick cheekily notes. "I eventually went with what looked like the easiest option and after the first few thrusts I was in heaven."

AMG Brasil had been running a contest allowing readers to guess Mr. Roddick's identity. An iPhone, DVDs and "props from the set of AMAZôNIA" will be awarded to the winner next week via AMGstudio.com/wordpress.

[Edited slightly for clarity, 5:30pm] A storm whipped up this past week as word began to spread that director Kristen Bjorn and Sarava Productions’ latest sex-soaked epic, EL RANCHO, contains a condomless sex scene (between real-life boyfriends Pedro Andreas and Daniel Marvin) in the mail-order version available only via KristenBjorn.com.

We’ve seen Messrs. Andreas and Marvin before: They are the gorgeous, body-beautiful pair whose passionate coupling is a highlight of COLLIN O’NEAL’S WORLD OF MEN: SAO PAOLO (CollinONeal.com and Raging Stallion Studios) and one of the best duo scenes of 2007. Their threesome with Andre Santos in COLLIN O’NEAL’S WORLD OF MEN: MIAMI is equally scorching. Their first condomless scenes for CollinONeal.com has been repackaged as the 35-minute PEDRO AND DANIEL: PRIVATE SESSIONS.

Industry watchers have been waiting for this to happen: It began several years ago when various companies (Big Blue Productions and Raging Stallion, among others) began actively promoting oral cumshots in their films. This was a distinct move away from scrupulously safe humping in the Big Eight studio flicks.

The Big Eight are Bel Ami, Channel 1 Releasing, COLT Studio, Falcon Studios, Hot House Video, Raging Stallion Studios, Sarava Productions and Titan Media. Smaller companies like Big Blue Productions, Centaur Films, Dark Alley Media, Jet Set Productions, Lucas Entertainment (arguable...more on that later), Miami Studios, Red Devil Entertainment and Studio 2000 are considered boutique studios.

I called around and virtually no one was willing to speak on the record about this. But off the record? Certain powerful industryites are friggin’ furious. But if you think a Bjorn-branded condomless scene means the horse is now out of the barn, you haven’t been paying attention. More on that soon.

I queried both Kristen Bjorn (via email), and his longtime aide-de-camp, Barry “The Bear” Gollop (via email and telephonic device), about the burgeoning EL RANCHO controversy. Mr. Gollop told me that he is no longer involved on the creative side of Sarava and instead works primarily in promotions and marketing, with a heavy emphasis on combating illegal downloads of Sarava material. “I didn’t know about this scene until after the fact,” he told me. However, “I have no doubt in my mind that greed, money or [publicity] had nothing to do with this.” After two decades of professional partnership, Mr. Gollop asserts, he knows Kristen Bjorn well enough to state that “he has never been someone who was interested in making as much money as he possibly could, cutting corners to save a few bucks, or doing a publicity stunt to get the attention of the industry. How many times has he even come to an award show?” (I can answer that: Not many.)

Mr. Bjorn has been somewhat reluctant to speak publicly about anything over the years. This controversy certainly hasn’t changed his position in that regard. His statement is the same that he has given other outlets: “Before things get out of hand, let me explain,” he says. “Yes, in the mail-order version there is a condomless scene between a real-life couple in a long-term relationship of the same HIV status. There is a warning at the beginning of the film advising people of this special situation. Since most people in this type of relationship have condomless sex, I don’t feel that it is incorrect to allow it in the video. I trust that viewers are intelligent enough to understand the difference between this and a ‘bareback’ film. Sarava Productions doesn’t promote or condone unsafe sex practices.” He also acknowledges the complaints from industry peers like Titan Media. “While I respect Titan’s politics, we may not see eye-to-eye on this point.”

Yeah, no kidding! They definitely do not see eye-to-eye. You’ll have to trust The Bear, and trust me, that Kristen Bjorn is not someone prone to publicity stunts or money-grubbing. I called around and spoke to several studio heads. “We don’t want to go bareback,” one of ‘em told me. “But if that’s where the audience is going, that’s where we’ll go.” We’ll revisit this issue next week, but what are your thoughts on this, people? Does this mean condoms-only gay porn is headed for the scrap heap alongside VHS tapes?

UPDATE: 11:15pm: Local news is reporting the fire at Micky's is fully contained. One person was rescued from the building and is being treated for his injuries. The top floor and roof of Micky's was gutted by the blaze, while the bottom floor sustained heavy smoke and fire damage.

West Hollywood, Calif. -- A large fire broke out late Tuesday afternoon at West Hollywood landmark Micky's nightclub. The fire is still burning (as of 6pm PST) and at last count had drawn 7-9 fire trucks and several dozen fire fighters. One person was rescued from a second-floor office and treated for their injuries. Micky's has been the location for dozens of gay adult biz parties over the years, including the popular weekly "Cocktails with the Stars" meet-and-greet. Stay tuned for new developments.

NEW RELEASE DESK: Hot New Autumn Blue Movies

It’s a nonstop sex party this week in "The Adams Report by JC Adams"! Woo-hoo! Let’s get it on, hot stu...eh, who am I kidding? It's dead in GayPornLand this time of year. There was some heat around the Gay Erotic Expo a couple weeks back thanks to Jason Ridge (read last week's column for more on that) and Zeb Atlas Productions is casting about for new talent for an upcoming hardcore feature. And...yeah, that's about it, really. So let's take a look at some new and upcoming A-ticket fuck flicks.

Various studios are prepping for the release of their big autumn titles: All Worlds Video and Channel 1 Releasing have LINK: THE EVOLUTION on tap; Lucas Entertainment has THE INTERN; Raging Stallion Studios just wrapped GRUNTS; COLT Studio and Buckshot Productions have the new Jerry Douglas, titled THE BROTHERHOOD on the menu; and Hot House Video is promoting TRUNKS 4: WHITE HEAT.

Meanwhile, Sarava Productions and director Kristen Bjorn are enjoying renewed buzz with the release of ROCKS & HARD PLACES (with EL RANCHO about to hit the streets) and Oh Man! International has the latest from the ever quixotic Jean-Marc Prouveur, titled BEAST (billed as a "grown-up fairy tale" with no Fred Faurtin in the cast, dammit, but plenty of the gorgeous Aiden Bonini).

Writer/director Jett Blakk co-directed DANTE with performer Ty Hudson and his newly formed Tyger's Eye Films. Mr. Blakk is the only gay porn director, apart from perhaps Lucas Kazan, who would produce a fuck flick prominently billed as "based on Dante Alighieri's Inferno." He and Mr. Kazan are also the only ones who could pull it off.

Jet Set Productions has been very busy lately. Their latest is JET SET FRATERNITY GANGBANG 2 with several "It" hotbois in the cast, among them Jesse Santana and Sebastian Young. Andrew Rosen directs and edits.

1 Distribution is keeping busy as summer winds to a close with the latest in their popular NEIGHBORHOOD BUDDIES series (from Next Door Male) of solo/oral-only flicks featuring "amateur straight guys" (aren't they all?) NEIGHBORHOOD BUDDIES VOL. 6 is two hours of crazy-hot "straight" guys, smooth and athletically built, working themselves to climax. DEPT. OF SELF PROMOTION: 2008 Adam Gay Video Directory

It's that time of year once again, Constant Readers. We're coming into the home stretch. In about six weeks, give or take, we'll be locking the 2008 Adam Gay Video Directory. (Featured here is the 2007 edition featuring the wondrous Francois Sagat.)

For you civilians reading this column, the 2008 AGVD will be available at your friendly neighborhood porn emporium, and of course AdamGayVideo.com, in early December. For you industryites, you've got until September 15-ish to reserve ad space and to submit films for potential inclusion into this year's edition of the gay porn bible. Get in touch with me via the email address below for specifics.

Now that we've taken care of business, here's a hush-hush secret I'm letting out of the bag: Every year, dozens of porn performers make a full-court press for inclusion in the AGVD. Unfortunately, there just isn't room to include everyone and years ago, long before I came along, the publishers had to institute certain criteria that covered who got in and who did not. Inevitably the selection ruffles some feathers, which is a shame but it can't be avoided. And so, when I took over two years ago, I instituted a little rule: The first ten performers to ask that they be included got in, period, even if they appeared in only one obscure film that year. As long as they could provide a professional, print-quality nude snap, they got in.

Those ten slots were filled months ago for this year's AGVD. But as we've tweaked this year's layout, it turns out I've got a couple extra pages I can devote to more porn star profiles. That's about 12 extra profiles. I've filled half of those slots with guys who got squeezed out for various reasons, but the other half I decided to leave open to suggestion. So go ahead, guys: Fire away with your suggestions! I'm opening the floor to anyone. And make 'em good choices, okay? It's no shocker that Roman Heart or Chad Hunt or Collin O'Neal will be included; they're our top performers right now, so don't waste your wish on them. What I'm looking for are guys that aren't as famous as you think they ought to be, for whatever reason, and deserve the PR boost that inclusion in the Directory would provide. My crack staff of reviewers watches almost everything, but naturally there are guys that will fall through the cracks. That's where you come in, Constant Reader. And wait for this year's edition to see which performers got the most votes...their profile will be indicated with some kind of "fan favorite" bullet. So get cracking, boys!

INDUSTRY UPDATE: COCODORM.COM ORDERED TO CLOSE

Miami has ordered CocoDorm.com to shut its doors. The Miami Herald reports this week that following 10 hours of arguments on August 13, Miami's Code Enforcement Board has ruled that CocoDorm and Flava Works owner Phillip Bleicher is "illegally running an adult entertainment business out of a single-family home," noting that the residence is zoned only for residential use, "and ordered that those operations cease."

The article begins, "(t)he residents of Northeast 27th Street in Edgewater may not have neighbors like Pretty Ricky, Jerzey Flyrt and Nick Da Kannon much longer." A charge that Flava Works was operating "an illegal rooming house" was dismissed.

Defense cited an 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in favor of VoyeurDorm.com (described as "a female version of CocoDorm") in Tampa, Florida that found the site "not guilty of similar violations" and, further, that "business transactions don't happen" at the CocoDorm residence.

The Code Enforcement Board didn't buy it, citing differences between Miami's and Tampa's laws covering adult businesses, and noting one example of CocoDorm performer Breion, who was seen using a security code on a keypad to gain admittance.

The city gave CocoDorm two weeks to vacate. An unsigned note on the CocoDorm splash page claims they have filed "an emergency petition in federal court to block the city's ruling...and sue the city of Miami."

"Miami is wasting tax dollars to prosecute the legal CocoDorm residence, while drug dealers and prostitutes reign free on the streets of this neighborhood," reads the declaration. "...What happens inside of CocoDorm is no different than what happens behind the closed door of any other house; people live, interact and have sex. This is our and your First Amendment right, and we will fight for these rights...We will not close the CocoDorm!"

This is not the first time CocoDorm has run into trouble. In May 2006, we wrote in this space, "A cease-and-desist order was delivered on April 20th by the Chicago Department of Public Health to the private residence where various models for CocoDorm.com were filmed for broadcast on the internet." Per a Chicago Free Press article, "concerns were raised about cases of HIV and other STDs tied to the site's models" following "credible evidence [that the models] were engaging in unsafe sex practices and were spreading HIV, syphilis and gonorrhea through contact with individuals outside the business."

These charges were strongly refuted by CocoDorm. "There's no one HIV-positive in our dorm, so that's untrue. The models also engage in safe sexual practices," they contended, noting they believed the city shut down the website because they did not have the proper business licenses.

People are (still) talking about… Performer and new studio head Jason Ridge’s incendiary interview several weeks back on “The Jason Sechrest Show” at KSEX.com. The matinee idol-handsome Mr. Ridge is featured in several hot films right now, among them COMMUNION for Hot House, THE INTERN for Lucas Entertainment and MY VIRTUAL JR. DADDY: JASON RIDGE for Virtual Male/U.S. Male. He recently shot the first production under his newly formed Ridgeline Films banner.

But it’s that interview – during which he slagged several high-profile industryites – that has a good one-third of the buzz ruffled. Further, he has some shaking their heads over his continued advocacy for jailed performer (and accused murderer) Harlow Cuadra. However, on his blog Jason Ridge apologizes to one of those people he dissed: performer Trevor Knight. He’s online at JasonRidge.blogspot.com.

For the interview, he notes that he “brought along a 1997 Pinot Noir to help…not knowing that I would eventually end up hurting people who I actually cared for. I don’t have regrets of that evening but some of my frustrations should have been directed [personally].” He then apologizes publicly to Mr. Knight, noting that his “disappointment in me was enough for me to take a step back and realize that I actually hurt a few people in the process of trying to get my anger, concerns and frustrations out.”

Mr. Ridge notes that he still has concerns about some industry vets and what he perceives as business as usual in GayPornLand. “I’m finding out more and more that people don’t speak out against exploitation, being degraded, not earning good pay or having to sleep with a director before they can cast you in a movie,” he writes. “Nobody wants to rock the boat, but it seems that I already have. I won’t stay [quiet] and any bridges that I burn will only be rebuilt bigger and stronger… In order to be a success you have to stand out from the crowd.”

Cody Cash Out of Jail, Back to Work

Per his agent, David Forest, performer Cody Cash will be paroled from prison (charges related to drug possession) September 2 and plans to launch back into the gay adult biz. He'll be a guest on "The Jason Sechrest Show" at KSEX.com on September 7, and at "Cocktails with the Stars" at Micky's in West Hollywood on September 27. As yet Mr. Cash hasn't lined up any new XXX gigs but these personal appearances are planned, in part, to reintroduce the pup to producers and to the public.

Cody Cash appeared in a handful of films in 2004, notably BAD BOYS CLUB (Studio 2000), WET PALMS, EPISODES 1-3 (Jet Set) and ROUGH TRADE (MSR Videos).

New York -- Erotica legend Ryan Idol has joined the cast of the Roundabaout Theatre Company's limited-engagement revival of the Terrence McNally play The Ritz. Mr. Idol will be making his Broadway debut. Previews begin September 14 at Studio 54 in advance of an October 11 opening night (it is scheduled to run through December 2).

In related news, The Adams Report by JC Adams recently confirmed that Mr. Idol's solo show had been delayed several months. His stage experience includes an Off-Broadway run in Ronnie Larsen's Making Porn and a tour of Mark Dunn's Scent of Rain.

Playbill.com quotes press notes that describe The Ritz as "an over-the-top comedy that takes place in a bathhouse in Manhattan. When Gaetano Proclo needs to hide from mobster Carmine Vespucci, he escapes to the Ritz. When Gaetano realizes the Ritz is a gay bathhouse and not a Turkish bath, he pretends to be a big-time Broadway producer to keep suspicions low. When Carmine locates Gaetano what transpires is wild, manic mayhem."

Ryan Idol isn't the first gay adult superstar to join The Ritz. A 1983 revival of the show included Casey Donovan of BOYS IN THE SAND fame. The Grapevine Buzz: Have you heard about Idol: The Musical running Off-Broadway? It opened July 5 at New York's 45th Street Theatre for a nine-week limited run. Per "Entertainment Weekly" in the new issue, "It's about a club of small-town Ohio high-schoolers so in love with [Clay] Aiken that they don choir robes and worship a crude 10-foot statue of him." The "EW" write-up claims the songs are "campy [and] hummable." Sounds like a slam on Aiken, right? (He has not commented as yet.) But, no, the producer is a serious Claymate. HOLLYWOOD, CA -- The gay adult landscape shifts dramatically once again with the news that Channel 1 Releasing has acquired Catalina Video. The move further solidifies Channel 1 Releasing's position as the industry's largest gay adult company.

Expect an official announcement soon.

The move comes just over a year after All Worlds Video was purchased and brought under the Channel 1 umbrella, which includes Chi Chi LaRue's Rascal Video and director-performer Doug Jeffries' Electro Video.

The acquisition of Catalina Video further consolidates the field of major gay adult companies. In recent years, Catalina has been quiet. Their last new films were released in 2005 and since then they have focused on re-releasing classic titles and repurposing their extensive catalog.

Founded in 1978 by director William Higgins, Catalina in the 1980's was the locus point for many of gay adult's best-known personalities: Apart from Mr. Higgins, producer Scott Masters and director John Travis, who would later form Studio 2000, worked there. Chi Chi LaRue's first job in gay adult was in the sales department at Catalina. Our most popular star -- Jeff Stryker -- made the enduring classic, POWERTOOL, for the company. In the 1990's their top star was Steve Rambo, whose career-long association with Catalina set the template for exclusive contracts with performers.

Catalina twice won Best Picture at the GAYVN Awards: In 1986 for POWERTOOL and again in 1989 for UNDERCOVER. In 1993 Catalina was awarded dual Best Video Grabby Award wins for EASY RIDER and POWERTOOL II.

Via AVN.com, CyberBears and director Ken Slater are angry that an unauthorized clip of their film FEED THE BEARS aired during a recent broadcast of Late Night with Conan O'Brien. The episode's featured guest was Adam Sandler, who was promoting his film I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. When a clip of that film was supposed to air, a few moments of FEED THE BEARS, featuring performers Ali and Joe Falconi, played instead.

"All of our DVDs clearly indicate that they are only licensed and sold for in-home viewing by consenting adults," a CyberBears representative told AVN.com. "The notion of broadcasting a portion of one of our adult movies over open network television violates the spirit of the legal and ethical guidelines our company follows to shield our content from inappropriate viewers."

CyberBears is also concerned about "protecting our copyrighted materials. We were surprised that neither the performers, the director, nor the company were credited. By week's end jet lag finally caught up with me. I've never really been subject to jet leg from travel between the right and left coasts; three hours' time difference didn't seem to register. RUMOR CONTROL: The Grapevine (Updated)

"Absolutely, positively not true." That's the word from Falcon Studios' Director of Operations, Troy Prickett about the rumor that Falcon President Todd Montgomery had left the company. Normally we'd ignore this kind of stuff; not a week goes by that someone in GayPornLand isn't the subject of whispered gossip. But this tidbit took on a life of its own rather quickly, propogated by people who know better.

So I did some actual legwork. Mr. Montgomery is still heading up Falcon. Mr. Prickett suspects the originator of this rumor knew that several Falcon staffers and all eight studio exclusives were going to be out of town for a few days, touring the Sonoma wine country for a staff retreat of sorts, and would be out of cell phone range long enough for the stories to take hold.

Speaking of which, Mr. Prickett tells me they squeezed in two Mick Hicks photo shoots while they toured the Sonoma wineries. The first was for an upcoming cover of GAYVN magazine, and the second was for a forthcoming Men magazine cover celebrating the studio's 35th anniversary. For both, all eight exclusives are featured—Cort Donovan, Roman Heart, Erik Rhodes and Matthew Rush with newer signees (and real-life lovers) Aden Jaric and Jordan Jaric, Tristan Jaxx (so new his PR photos are still wet) and Ryan Wade. (To head off any further gossip, Mr. Prickett tells me both Mr. Heart and Mr. Rhodes have re-upped their contracts for two additional years.)

Out Mag Goes Bareback

The August 2007 issue of Out magazine (designer Nate Berkus on the cover) has the cover line: "Deadly Not Edgy" and the subhead "The Rise of Bareback Porn." That's a bit misleading as condomless videos have been proliferating for almost ten years now.

(In other mainstream gay mag news, The Advocate has published their annual "SEXSEXSEX" issue but missing is an expected story about the Timothy Boham/Marcus Allen murder case. I was interviewed for the story, along others from GayPornLand, but it appears to have been delayed or spiked.)

Flip to page 58 for an article titled "Baring the Truth" by James Gavin that examines the "collective silence" over the popularity of bareback titles with what the magazine sees as a "corresponding rise in HIV infections." Among the GayPornLand boldfaced names condemning condomless films are Michael Brandon, Will Clark, director Gino Colbert, directrix Chi Chi LaRue, Adult Industry Medical's Sharon Mitchell, NakedSword.com's Michael Stabile and Tim Valenti, plus performer Brent Corrigan (and his partner Grant Roy), who infamously filmed his first on-camera roles when he was underage, and has undergone a change in philosophy since he was dragged into the Bryan Kocis murder earlier this year, for which sometime costar Harlow Cuadra and an associate have been charged. (The article mentions all of this.)

That's nine different people expressing opposition, with just three on the other side of the debate: performer-distributor Sam Dixon, whose company Tipo Sesso releases bareback titles, and veteran performer Dino Phillips, who made the leap into condomless films last year. The reclusive Paul Morris of popular bareback company Treasure Island Media is profiled as well inside the article. Their fan-favorite star Dawson (of DAWSON'S 50-LOAD WEEKEND infamy) has a brief quote that doesn't address the issue at hand.

Look, I'm glad a mainstream homo magazine is taking time out from fashion layouts to talk about gay men and sex. The mags do tend to be prudish. But condomless videos are hugely popular again for a reason. It's worth asking why in greater detail. Pointing fingers is too easy. And you know what? It's not working; bareback is more popular than ever. Maybe it's time we changed our tactics.

Further, Mr. Gavin notes in his contributor's bio that he wondered if "all the bareback porn I'd watched had somehow weakened my resolve to always play safe... Writing [the article] gave me the kick in the ass I needed."

Here's where I have a problem: Does Mr. Gavin believe if bareback porn did not exist that his resolve would have never wavered? Isn't that like an alcoholic blaming the existence of pubs for his falling off the wagon? Or do you think I'm oversimplifying?

Do I believe gay porn is strongly influential? Yes. But where do we draw the line? How many safety measures should we take, how much self-censorship should we practice, when all of us have businesses to run? When do we stop being our brother's keeper and allow him to make his own decisions? Share your thoughts and join the debate.

Flava Works Vice-President Dies

INDUSTRY UPDATE: Flava Works Vice-President Dies

The Adams Report by JC Adams has confirmed that Dekenric Daniel Wiley, co-president of Miami, Florida-based studio Flava Works, has died. Mr. Wiley, 32, passed July 14th and the reported cause of death was pneumonia.

In a statement, Flava Works president Phillip Bleicher said, "Dekenric was the sun that brightened the day and kept the Flava Works family together during difficult times. We will truly miss his unselfishness and generous personality he shared with us all. We mourn with you a great friend and a great leader. Our condolences go to his family and friends and everyone Dekenric touched. It's a huge loss for the Flava Works family. His legacy and memory will stay with us forever."

Per his wishes, Mr. Wiley was cremated and no funeral service was held. Instead, his family in Dallas plans to hold a private memorial service. Flava Works is arranging a memorial next week in Miami. A message board has been opened at the email address below for those wishing to share their memories of Mr. Wiley.

Horrible news this morning: Hot House exclusive Kent North committed suicide July 4th. Word is currently spreading via grapevine. Very few details are available at the moment, but we're working on getting the full story. His website currently features only a photo of Kent and a short message: "In Memoriam: 27 December 1972 - 04 July 2007". Hot House will be releasing a statement later today.

A UK native, Kent North was 33 years old. He appeared in roughly 15 films since 2004, and this spring won Best Solo Performance GAYVN and Grabby Awards for his striking work in AT YOUR SERVICE.

Saturday, June 30th has come and gone with no word from beleaguered PlanetOut Inc. as to whether they located a buyer for Specialty Publications, which produces the Men, Freshmen, [2] and Unzipped Monthly gay adult magazines. As Constant Readers know, I freelanced for Specialty for some time before taking over as editor of Unzipped Monthly for two years. I still have my moles over there and they are in the dark as well. The grim clouds hanging over gay XXX publishing will likely gather a bit longer.

PlanetOut owed a $6.9-million-dollar payment to its lenders by June 30. "This is after reporting a near-$7 million loss for the first quarter of 2007 with a projected loss of $7-9 million for the year," notes GAYVN.com.

PlanetOut CFO Dan Miller told Advocate.com that, "The first step is to get the company capitalized sufficiently. That's part of the logic in selling the adult business." The last time I was a guest on "The Derek and Romaine Show" on Sirius OutQ satellite radio, the pending sale of Specialty Publications was a heated topic of discussion. The general consensus is that blame for PlanetOut's financial losses can be placed on adult entertainment's rapidly shifting dynamics as much as on the poor job PlanetOut has done managing their disparate assets.

PlanetOut also owns Liberation Publications, which produces the Advocate and Out magazines. GAYVN.com notes that "advertising in gay media is at an all-time high" but ad revenue at the two venerable gay titles are "declining, especially at The Advocate." Both magazines are being retooled yet again; the new Advocate will be unveiled in September, following Out mag's relaunch last year.

Industry insiders are still grumbling about how PlanetOut honchos didn't do SpecPub any favors by noting--in their own press release--that the publishing house "did not fit the ad-revenue-driven model of the other PlanetOut businesses."

Popular performer Jason Ridge announced on his blog this week the formation of Ridgeline Films, a development he has been teasing for some months. Production recently wrapped in Palm Springs on the debut title for the boutique label, helmed by Dylan Ryan and a cast that includes Roman Heart. Joining Ridgeline Films are famed party promoter Jeffrey Sanker and performer Rob Romoni (as production manager). Distribution and other details are pending.

Instantly popular upon his 2002 debut, thanks in part to his dreamboat good looks and acting training, Jason Ridge won the 2004 GAYVN Award for Best Newcomer and shared the cover (with Alex Collack and Marco Paris) of the 2006 Adam Gay Video Directory as a co-exclusive for Hot House Video. He has appeared in nearly 50 films, including this year's GAYVN-winning Best Picture MICHAEL LUCAS' LA DOLCE VITA (Lucas Entertainment), SUPER SOAKED (Jocks Studios), THE VELVET MAFIA 1-2 (Falcon Studios) and WET PALMS (Jet Set Productions).

"I'm on a campaign along with a few other people to help the accused Harlow Cuadra fight this unjust accusation towards him," Mr. Ridge wrote in a June 29 blog entry. He has joined at least one other person, currently unnamed, to set up a defense fund for Mr. Cuadra. He notes, "I'm just not buying all of this. I believe that someone else caused the death of Kocis and this person happens to be in the adult film industry and it is all a set-up. I'm just going on a gut feeling and hearing from Harlow from prison and a certain person trying to get a scoop and rights to exploit Harlow even more drives me to want to help him more."

CRIME BLOTTER: Tommy Saxx Arrested

It's Wednesday, so it must be time for another gay porn mug shot. Performer Tommy Saxx, who worked as a hospital technician in Grapevine, Texas, was arrested for going on a shopping spree with the stolen credit cards of a patient, a police officer, who died in the emergency room of Baylor Medical Center.

I'm a bit behind the curve on reporting this story because, well, Christ, this crime spree among our guys is just exhausting. Enough, already.

Mr. Saxx, 29, whose real name is Dandy David Wiles, was charged with "fraudulent use of or possession of identifying information," per one report, "a state jail felony that carries a maximum penalty of two years in jail." The cards were apparently stolen a month ago and the theft was not uncovered until the deceased patient's wife received the bill. Mr. Wiles was identified from surveillance video in an electronics store where he had purchased a television. He was arrested Tuesday, June 19th and freed later that day when he posted $5,000 bail.

The gay porn grapevine went a little nutso over the past 24 hours. Hits to our sites were ablaze with the search terms "Gus Mattox death" and "Gus Mattox died." Further, the GAYVN-winning Performer of the Year wasn't the only one for whom reports of his death have been, as they say, greatly exaggerated. Dancer, nonsex performer and jack-of-all-trades Adam Killian (perhaps best known for Jet Set's THE HOLE) has also been the subject of premature-death rumors lately.

I tracked 'em both down today. And they're fine. "Me and Mark Twain, huh?" said Mr. Mattox. "Maybe I should post a photo of me with today's newspaper as 'proof of life.' I will admit that I feel almost dead after the major construction I did on my house. But, dead or alive, it's when they stop talking about you you have to worry." He asked me to post a clarification, a request that I am only too happy to fulfill. "I'd hate to think my Mom was catching up on her gay porn news and read her baby boy Gus had bitten the dust," Mr. Mattox quipped. "Especially as I have that Tupperware to return."

I tracked down Mr. Killian soon after speaking with Gus Mattox. "Wow, that's an odd one," he told me by email. "It's the first I've heard of it." I told him that several fans had actually emailed their concerns in notes filled with exclamation points and sad-faced emoticons. Mr. Killian joked, "At least [they] sounded upset by that piece of misinformation!" So there you have it, Constant Readers. Nothing to see here. (Whew!)

Upstart studio Dark Alley Media got tongues wagging with the announcement a few weeks ago of GAY BOMB, a sex-satire in the vein of their recent GAYTANAMO, which ruffled a few feathers. Mainstream-ish bloggers also took note. The Wired.com blog, "Danger Room" recently linked to Dark Alley's press release announcing the film and snarked, "Military technology has inspired some of history's greatest films: Firefox, Stealth, Crimson Tide...the list is practically endless. But never, to the best of my knowledge, has a gay porn house dared to [plant] in this arena, strived to go head to head with these timeless classics. Friends, I can now report that this imbalance has been rectified."

Raging Stallion Studios announced today the signing of Brodie Sinclair to an exclusive contract. One of the most exciting discoveries of recent vintage is the lovely, buffed out Max Schutler, a 25-year-old pup from Argentina. Twelve months ago Titan Media had the spectacularly raunchy FOLSOM FILTH out in time for the Folsom Street Festival. AVN.com reports that FBI agents visited FilmCo Productions Wednesday, June 20 to inspect paperwork for five adult titles from Filmco and Bacchus Releasing. This is the third 2257 paperwork investigation in recent weeks, including a June 1 inspection at gay amateur studio JT Video. There are no details as to which Bacchus titles the agents asked after. "They were very polite and professional," FilmCo's general manager told AVN.com. "All went well. They asked for directions to a restaurant, packed up and left."

Mark Dalton Jailed

Never mind about catching musclebod Mark Dalton together with Zeb Atlas this coming weekend for Houston Gay Pride, where they were scheduled to appear in the Pride Parade among other personal appearances. He is currently a guest of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Mr. Dalton's agent, David Forest, spelled out some details in an email this afternoon. "Mark is being held in custody by the TDCJ due to [an] 'altercation' he had on May 31. They haven't made any decision, yet, on his future parole status. They basically stopped his parole, temporarily, because he had a run-in with the police. That run-in involved two misdemeanors that, as of today, he has not been charged with."

Per Mr. Forest, those two misdemeanors are Assault/Family Violence and Interference with a 911 Call. He was arrested May 31 and posted $7500 bail the following day. Mr. Dalton made the further mistake of failing to inform his parole officer and on June 11 a warrant was issued for his arrest. He has been awaiting charges to be filed since being incarcerated June 13. Mr. Forest says there is nothing Mark Dalton can do "but sit there and wait. Three weeks after his arrest, however, there are still no charges filed and it is possible there will be none. We can't assume he is at fault or that anyone is pressing charges."

Mark Dalton and Zeb Atlas are the headlining duo in the hotly anticipated new film MARK MEETS ZEB: THE TEXAS TWO-STEP.

Mr. Gobo's name is familiar if you pay attention to porn credits. His career began ten years ago when he took on lighting/camera duties for Hot House Video, then served as staff videographer for Raging Stallion Studios until 2002. From there he freelanced for Bear Films and other companies, ran the Factory Video editing department and eventually landed at Falcon.

"He definitely has an eye for fetish," the studio tells me. "Rougher guys, rougher action is the type of movie he prefers to direct and directs best. He's a good fit for Mustang."

Lucas Entertainment has added something new to their online store: music. They are now selling the debut CD from Nekked, titled "A Barrier of Skin." The partnership makes sense, as Nekked's scoring for MICHAEL LUCAS' LA DOLCE VITA won a GAYVN Award for Best Music several months ago.

Nekked is the collaboration of musicians (and real-life boyfriends) JC Faust and the mononamed Sinn, who met in New York City in 2002 and soon afterwards began performing together.
