Blue Blake's an Open Book (as of August 2008)

I caught up with director-author Blue Blake this week. That's right--"author." Mr. Blake was woozy from having burned the candle at both ends for weeks to finish his autobiography, titled Out of the Blue: Confessions of an Unlikely Porn Star.

It will be published by Running Press, a division of Perseus Press, on August 25, 2008. "It comes out in England, Canada, North America, Australia and New Zealand on the same day," he told me. "You can tell everybody it's all signed, sealed and delivered. I finished the book [this week]. So I'm slowly decompressing and returning to the real world. Perseus [will] hire a publicist for me and we go pretty much full bore in January."

Until then, Mr. Blake is flacking THE MUSCLE PIT starring newcomer BamBam Micelli (great stage name) with Brad Rock and Robert Van Damme DP'ing Josh Weston. Next on the agenda is MUSCLE PENITENTIARY 2 now that the book is finally topped off.

Raging Stallion's new MEN of the Year

Timed to their participation in San Francisco's Folsom Street Festival, Raging Stallion Studios has announced their new Man of the Year; whoops, no, actually, it's MEN of the Year; yep, Steve Cruz and Roman Ragazzi will be sharing the title for the next twelve months.

"Roman represents the epitome of male beauty and structure," Mr. Ward purred in the press release. "He is at the apex of our species--a fine example of a proud, sex-positive, gay man." And about Mr. Cruz, "He is the perfect pig slut porn star... And that chest and face! He is another contender for best looking man alive!"

Jake Deckard reigned throughout 2007, and he inherited the crown from Remy Delaine (2006). Previous RSS Men of the Year were Miguel Leonn (2005), Shane Rollins (2004), my dream husband Tom Vacarro (2003), Michael Brandon (2002), Bryce Piece (2001) and Dean Coulter (2000).

In addition, RSS co-head JD Slater presented a new award, the Centurion Pictures "Larger Than Life" trophy, to Tober Brandt. A deserving citation, to be sure.

Mr. Cruz can be seen in the new RSS pic INK STORM and the upcoming GRUNTS, while Mr. Ragazzi also has GRUNTS forthcoming and is currently starring in COLLIN O'NEAL'S MIAMI, PLAYBACK and TAILPIPES.

FOLSOM STREET POSTER CONTROVERSY

San Francisco's Folsom Street Fair unspools this weekend with an extra helping of controversy. Their poster depicting various Folsom attendees displayed in imitation of Leonardo da Vinci's famed "Last Supper" has twisted the panties of the religious right. Naturally, Fox News has jumped on board, A spokesman for Concerned Women for America declared Folsom as "nothing short of a mini Sodom and Gomorrah dressed up as a gay pride event."

There's a gay porn tie-in here: Titan Media Exclusives Tober Brandt (middle- right) and Dean Flynn (far left) are pictured, and that's NakedSword.com's one-and-only Sister Roma shown middle-left.

As GayPornBlog.com notes, "Kudos to Sister Roma for being on Fox News twice in one year. She is officially [our] hero." (A photo of a fully made-up Roma was flashed repeatedly onscreen during various Fox News broadcasts following the mini-uproar over the COLT Studio 40th anniversary shindig last spring.)

The Miller Brewing Company has demanded Folsom organizers remove their company logo from the poster (they have not withdrawn their sponsorship). Their statement: "While Miller has supported the Folsom Street Fair for several years, we take exception to the poster the organizing committee developed this year. We understand some individuals may find the imagery offensive and we have asked the organizers to remove our logo from the poster effective immediately."

Festival organizers have responded in part by saying, "There was no intention to be particularly pro-religion or anti-religion with this poster; the image is intended only to be reminiscent of the 'Last Supper' painting. We hope that people will enjoy the artistry for what it is - nothing more or less. Many people choose to speculate on deeper meanings."

DEPT OF WEHT: Ken Ryker

Another dispatch from the Dept. of WEHT: Aahhh...Ken Ryker. That gorgeous slab of blond tanned beef. The eternal star. Mr. Ryker's last appearance on the porn scene came in 2003 and '04 via his Ken Ryker Films label that produced RYKER'S WEB and RYKER'S MONEY SHOT, plus a cameo in JET SET DIRECT: TAKE ONE (Jet Set, natch).

I was curious about his whereabouts these days and looked him up. Turns out Ken Ryker is living in Georgia and doing just fine, working a normal gig and keeping those famously brawny body in shape. Constant Readers know the legendary topman has been burned more than once by the business side of the sex trade, and a few years ago he decided he'd had a good run and essentially retired. But wait! I'm told he's still open to the right comeback project. What do you think? I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the big guy back in the saddle. DEPT OF WEHT: Tony Donovan

UPDATED: From the Dept. of WEHT ("Whatever Happened To") comes an update about the lovely and talented Tony Donovan, a fan favorite who has been out of circulation for about five years. You remember babyfaced Tony D., whose surname was borrowed from Chad Donovan, and although they look nothing alike, the Donovans did share one notable quality: about 20 inches of cock between them. Young Master Donovan worked between 1998 and 2002, with about 18 or so films on his resume, and to date he is the only performer to snag two Best Actor GAYVN statues (for 2000's ECHOES and 2001's CARNAL INTENTIONS, both Men of Odyssey pictures).

Tony Donovan's Wikipedia entry states that he died of a drug overdose in 2003; considering what gay adult has been through the past year, you can imagine my shock when I came across that bit of info. [Update: The entry has now been changed.] I've always been fond of the young buck and in 2002 when I was editor of Unzipped Monthly we got him for one of his last, and best, photo shoots together with a revealing interview. I'm happy to report that Tony Donovan is not dead. According to Men of Odyssey's Bob East, he's alive and well, working a regular 9-to-5'er and in a relationship. No plans to come back to XXX; that's apparently behind him for good.

Nice to have a spot of happy news for a change, eh?

"LINK: THE EVOLUTION" PREMIERE

Saturday night, September 29, was the premiere of LINK: THE EVOLUTION (All Worlds Video/Channel 1 Releasing) at The Faultline in Silverlake. God knows we all needed an opportunity to unwind given the emotional roller coaster of the past couple of weeks for gay adult entertainment. It was a crisp, cool night and the air was actually breathable for a change (the Faultline has an open-air patio/bar) thanks to several days of rain this week.

I got to the bar to find the door locked and was told they weren't letting anyone inside. (Good thing it wasn't raining.) People were just milling around the parking lot wondering what to do, so I took the opportunity to catch up and gossip with reviewer Leo Buck and performers Dominik Rider, Tyler Saint and Scott Spears.

Eventually the doors opened. It quickly turned into old home week for me: Reviewer Mickey Skee and his partner reviewer/producer John Rex, director Jim Steel and Sharon Kane (who turns up in a nonsex role in BOTTOM OF THE 9TH: LITTLE BIG LEAGUE 3) were among those I connected with at the bar. A fabulously mohawked Chi Chi LaRue soon joined us and we reminisced about the old days.

Ms. LaRue took over the mic to premiere the moodily lit opening credits of LINK: THE EVOLUTION and revealed a choice tidbit: "My adorable straight nephew from Minnesota did the music!"

Some other interesting news came as Ms. LaRue explained how LINK: THE EVOLUTION was meant to re-introduce All Worlds Video to the marketplace. With the recent purchase of Catalina Video, a similar reinvention is planned for 2008. "Catalina was where I began," she said. "My first job was selling POWERTOOL. And now I own it. Fierce!" And now the big scoop...look for POWERTOOL 3 one year from now. "We're looking for a guy who has never done [any porn] before, for anyone," Ms. LaRue said. "He has to have the face, the body, the cock. We're looking for a brand-new star, just like Jeff Stryker twenty years ago."

Later it was time to bring on the go-go boys: Tyler Saint (cut like a Greek statue), Cole Ryder (furry-hot), Blake Riley (totally adorable) and Steve Cruz, a compact cub exuding sexual heat and vibrant energy. Backed by choice tunes, thanks to Ms. LaRue's undeniable talent as a DJ, Cruz had the crowd cheering and whooping.

I must have really needed to let my hair down because I completely forgot to write down the names of the many folks I chatted up or spotted across the room, so apologies for not mentioning a whole bunch of people. But among those seen schmoozing were Bobby Trendy in boy drag; performers Chad Hunt, Christian Owen (newly shorn) and Lex Sabre; reviewer Martyn Dunn; Gay Chicago mag's Mark T. Nagel; Channel 1 Releasing's Tony Adonis, Jefferson and Doug Jeffries; and, just for good measure, random Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

UPDATE II: Danny Roddick, Tony Bishop

The sad story of 31-year-old performer Danny Roddick's passing last week continues to unfold. On various blogs, associates of Mr. Roddick are venting their anger over how they perceive their friend was treated by the studios that employed him, including Athletic Model Guild, via their AMG Brasil label, and COLT Studio, where he had been signed as an exclusive to their Buckshot Productions line. More on that in a moment.

AMG Brasil had already planned to make a donation to the World Wildlife Fund as they prep for the release of AMAZôNIA: CAPTURE and RELEASE, which topline Mr. Roddick. Following the news of his passing, they decided to make those donations in Mr. Roddick's name.

I spoke with COLT Studio Group president John Rutherford this week about the perception by some of Mr. Roddick's fans and friends that COLT's had been a bit...cold, I suppose, is the word, in their announcement of the death of one of their top stars. "Some of Danny's loved ones have chosen to deal with their loss in their own way," Mr. Rutherford told me. "We are not putting out a press release, but we are making notes on our blogs, website and online store."

They are also donating a portion of the proceeds from the sales of Mr. Roddick's films to New Leaf, a nonprofit counseling center in San Francisco. "COLT Studio Group and its COLT team here are a tight family and Danny was a part of our family," they announced on their new blog. Per the studio, New Leaf is "the only comprehensive mental health, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and social support organization in San Francisco geared specifically for the LGBT communities."

But just this morning, performer Tony Bishop sent around a passionately worded email decrying what he calls "the often reckless behavior and overreaching demands of the gay adult film studios." Mr. Bishop, who notes that he is now retired, makes the claim that studios "[prey on] the unsuspecting, overly optimistic, insecure, emotionally distressed young men who get into the gay adult film industry--chattel, essentially subjugated to indentured servitude for the explicit gain of the studio."

Mr. Bishop goes on to ask, "How many more deaths is it going to take before the studios wake up and do something... And by do something, I mean do something constructive to help curb this awesome and grotesque trend. Not, in Danny's case, a one-off contribution to a charitable organization... In an industry worth billions of dollars, why are the studios not doing more? ...We put our flesh, blood, tears, physical and mental health, personal relationships, overall well being on the line for the studios because you can't work if you won't put it all on the line for them...

"And at the end of the day we are a more fragile people. We too have hearts, minds and emotions. So give something back. Back [to] the public, back to our communities, be a corporate citizen for a change. Studios need to wake up and face the facts that with a few preemptive measures on their part, tragedies like Danny's can be avoided. And should be avoided! There is no reason it can not be."

Mr. Bishop suggests addressing substance abuse (presumably via public service announcements) as well as "actively sponsoring public health and mental health events and organizations that specifically help performers in the sex trade industry" and says "other organizations, like the one COLT has conceded to donating proceeds from some of Danny's films, are not good enough."

He closes his letter by exhorting the gay adult industry to "stop spending [money] on just sponsoring or throwing the next big circuit party--encouraging more abuse. Stop playing with people's lives and do something that will actually help our community so tragedies like Danny's may be avoided altogether."

Tony Bishop's pain is clear. No one can dispute that. And I agree wholeheartedly about one thing: Organizations such as Sharon Mitchell's Adult Industry Medical often go begging for funds and that is a goddamn shame. Yes, profit margins are shrinking. Everyone's hurting, yadda yadda. That is no excuse. We could do more.

But to what extent are we our brother's keeper? I don't know the specifics of Danny Roddick's professional relationship with COLT Studio and therefore I cannot comment about what, if anything, could have been done to prevent his death. It's worth asking about the level of responsibility that gay adult studios and producers bear in protecting the physical and mental health of their performers. But how much monitoring can they actually do? At what point does personal responsibility take over? Share your thoughts and let's talk about it.

DANNY RODDICK UPDATE

GayPornLand continues to recover from the sad and shocking news of the death of performer Danny Roddick. He was just 31 years old. I did some investigating and the exact cause of death is being withheld pending further investigation. There's been a lot of speculation around the internets as to how and why Mr. Roddick passed and why the cause has not been announced. There is no conspiracy, people. Just routine investigation.

Danny Roddick debuted two years ago together with his then-boyfriend, Alex Chandler, who was kind enough to leave a note in the comments section to our original story. Click here to read the full text as well as notes of condolence left by Mr. Roddick's peers. "At this time we are all numb and dealing with the shock of this tragedy," Mr. Chandler wrote. "Nothing can prepare you for this. He was loved by so many. He was my rock... For now, we need to sit back and remember all of the brightness he brought to so many of the people he touched."

RIP: DANNY RODDICK

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. -- COLT Studio announced on their blog this morning that performer Danny Roddick has died. He passed September 13 and details are sketchy for the moment. We are working this morning on confirming them. In a statement, COLT Studio Group President John Rutherford said, "We are devastated and saddened by this tragedy. We have watched Danny grow up and everyone here at COLT Studio Group extends our most heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. He will be missed."

Mr. Roddick toplines three highly anticipated upcoming films, BROTHERHOOD for Buckshot Productions/COLT, plus AMAZôNIA: CAPTURE and RELEASE for AMG Brasil.

"The loss of anyone so young and talented and especially a sweet and fragile individual is heartbreaking, but for someone who was rapidly approaching the peak of his career it is doubly painful," said his BROTHERHOOD director Jerry Douglas, and AMG Brasil's Dennis Bell notes simply, "I had the pleasure of working with Danny recently and will miss him greatly."

COLT's Kristofer Weston describes Danny Roddick as "one of the most caring and sensitive people I've ever had the privilege of working with on set. A truly beautiful man inside and out and I'm honored to have called him a friend."

Danny Roddick debuted in 2005 as one half of a popular "porn power couple" with Alex Chandler. He appeared in BIG RIG: EXTENDED CAB EDITION, BOOT BLACK BLUES, HARD STUDIES and HOSTILE for the COLT Studio Group.

WHAT ARE THE BIG MOVIES OF 2007?

As we cruise into mid-September, it's time to start looking at potential awards contenders. The 2008 GAYVN Awards will unspool in February 2008, while the 17th Annual Grabby Awards are set for May 2008.

I called and emailed around, polled my peers and the idea seems to be that the Best Picture field is a bit slim, according to my decidedly unscientific research. I'm not sure about that; we've got lots to pick through, but although many of 'em are clear contenders for specific categories, it's hard to pinpoint whether they'll earn a Best Picture slot.

There is no one big movie dominating the landscape; think Rascal Video's eventual winner a couple years back, WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS 1-2 or Lucas Entertainment's back-to-back Best Picture GAYVN winners, DANGEROUS LIAISONS and MICHAEL LUCAS' LA DOLCE VITA.

Chi Chi LaRue does have LINK: THE EVOLUTION now in release, but it's a plotless raunchfest and seems to be a lock for Best All-Sex Video. But what about Best Picture? Similarly, Michael Lucas is flacking THE INTERN, which is more along the lines of a sex comedy. The reviews aren't in yet, but will Lucas Entertainment's momentum be enough to propel it from the "Best Sex Comedy" ghetto?

Raging Stallion Studios has never won the GAYVN or Grabby for Best Picture, but this could be their year. MIRAGE was a giant hit and earned ecstatic reviews: "Dazzlingly erotic, a peerless Egyptian-themed epic," raved ManNet.com. "Porn has rarely, if ever, looked better," purred Adult Video News. "This is a leading awards contender for 2008." But wait! RSS just wrapped production on the big-budget epic GRUNTS, set for release at year's end. Will they compete against themselves and siphon off votes?

Another company with two potential contenders is Kristen Bjorn's Sarava Productions: Both ROCKS & HARD PLACES 1-2 and EL RANCHO are prime Bjorn porn, and the legendary director is one of the few whose cachet propels his (usually) plotless films out of the "Best All-Sex Video" ghetto. But do you think the controversy over the condomless duo scene in the non-retail version of EL RANCHO will derail his chances?

Buckshot Productions/COLT Studio cleaned up a couple years back with BUCKLEROOS 1-2 and now they've got a new Jerry Douglas production, BROTHERHOOD on tap. We can expect it will figure in the awards derbies.

Titan Media's had a pretty good year and the only question is which of their well-reviewed titles will emerge a Best Picture nominee: BARNSTORM, CAMPUS PIZZA, FOLSOM LEATHER, H20, ROAD TO REDNECK HOLLOW and SHACKED UP are on the menu, for starters.

JUSTICE for Hot House Video was a big contender in 2006 and this year, they've got a variety of all-sex pictures: COMMUNION; FULL THROTTLE; TOUGH STUFF; PACK ATTACK 2: MARCO PARIS and PACK ATTACK 3: C.J. KNIGHT; TRUNKS 4: WHITE HEAT, among others. For sure some of these will be among the nominees for Best All-Sex Video and Best Leather Video. Will they have the oomph to break into the coveted Best Picture slot?

MARK DALTON PAROLE REVOKED

Bad news for Mark Dalton and his slavering fans. The Texas Department of Corrections revoked his parole as of August 30, which means the blond hunk is headed back to prison once he serves out his current 45-day sentence in the Denton County Jail.

This info was provided by Mr. Dalton's agent, David Forest, who sent out a press release updating industryites as to the status of the superstar's legal status. He was arrested May 31 and booked on two misdemeanor counts ("assault causes bodily injury/family violence" and "interference with an emergency call") to which he pleaded no contest. Mr. Dalton was already on probation (stemming from his 2004 arrest on a drug-related charge) when he was arrested at the end of May, thus he's looking at another stint in prison.

In the meantime, his latest blue movie, MARK MEETS ZEB: THE TEXAS TWO-STEP (Zeb Atlas Productions) is selling strongly for Marina Pacific and at TLAvideo.com. His legal travails only seem to make him more popular.

I’m a bit behind the curve on this one, but Dark Alley Media has opened an office in Berlin... Writer/director Thor Stephans has packed up his longtime offices in Hollywood and moved to his ancestral home in Florida... Falcon Studios and writer/director Jett Blakk nabbed porn legend Lou Cass for a nonsex cameo in Blakk’s now-shooting picture for the studio. Sexy daddy Cass, now a very attractive 41, made half a dozen or so pictures between 1987 and 1990 and went on to a successful recording and mainstream acting career...

Speaking of returning stars, Kevin Miles makes an appearance in LINK: THE EVOLUTION from directrix Chi Chi LaRue and All Worlds Video (he also turned up this year at the popular MenatPlay.net). "Rolling Stone" Investigates Kocis Murder, Too

At the same time that Out magazine features a lengthy investigation of the Bryan Kocis murder, for which Harlow Cuadra and partner Joseph Kerekes are currently standing trial, Rolling Stone has done likewise, in the September 20 issue with 50 Cent and Kanye West on the cover.

The lengthy feature (not yet online) is by Peter Wilkinson and is hyperbolically titled "Death of a Porn King." It begins, "Bryan Kocis made millions exploiting teenage boys in gay porn. Did one of them arrange his murder?"

Both stories revel a bit too much for my taste in the lurid aspects of the case. This leaves The Advocate's story about the John Kelso murder, for which Timothy Boham/Marcus Allen is awaiting trial, in the wings. It was scheduled to run last month but was delayed or spiked. Too much gay-porn murder coverage, perhaps?

An interesting, if surreal, aspect of the Kocis murder case is the obsessive sniffing out of every single possible detail by dozens of online "fans," many of whom debate furiously and heatedly over every utterance by Cuadra or Brent Corrigan. The website FreeHarlowCuadra.com has been set up to raise money for Cuadra’s defense and he has drawn the support of A-list porn celebs like Jason Ridge. This level of obsession has not been replicated with Marcus Allen. It's worth examining why.

"Out" Mag Examines Bryan Kocis Murder Case

[Updated with edits] Check out the October 2007 issue of Out magazine with John Barrowman on the cover. One of the headlines reads: "Exclusive: The Murder That Rocked The Porn World."

The article by Michael Joseph Gross examines the Bryan Kocis murder case and includes an interview with Harlow Cuadra, who together with partner Joseph Kerekes, is currently on trial for the murder of Cobra Video's Bryan Kocis.

Just two issues ago, Out ran a story about bareback sex (and one that made no pretense towards objectivity, with nine sources condemning condomless sex in porn and just three arguing the other way). That story briefly sketched the outlines of the Kocis murder and included quotes from ex-Cobra star Brent Corrigan and his partner Grant Roy.

Inside, the current story is titled, "The Case of the Cobra Killer" (bro-ther) and begins: "Last winter, a notorious internet porn producer was brutally murdered. Police say he was the victim of an industry turf war--killed by rival porn players who wanted to make a 'million-dollar' movie with his biggest star. But this crime sits at the center of a much broader web of intrigue. An exclusive investigation uncovers the story..."

PRESS RELEASE ROUNDUP: Free "Grunts" Preview

More news to brighten this lazy Friday. Raging Stallion Studios issued a press release today announcing a free preview of their upcoming epic GRUNTS at RearStable.com. ADAM HART BACK ON THE SCENE

Agent David Forest enlivened this deader-than-dead week in GayPornLand with today's news that blond musclebod Adam Hart is back on the scene for live appearances (he's actually a fairly decent dancer) and films.

He's been out of circulation since 2002 or so, when he appeared in BRAD'S BUDDIES (Forest Films/Pacific Sun), INSIDE PORN (Sports & Recreation) and 2001's THE MISSING LINK (All Worlds VIdeo). TITAN MEDIA RESPONDS TO BAREBACK CONTROVERSY

Titan Media has responded to an item I ran last week about the latest bareback sex controversy to rile up GayPornLand: A condomless duo sex scene between real-life boyfriends Pedro Andreas and Daniel Marvin that appears in the mail-order-only version of EL RANCHO from Kristen Bjorn's Sarava Productions.

I queried Mr. Bjorn himself, who responded with a general statement that has appeared elsewhere on the web: "Yes, in the mail-order version there is a condomless scene between a real-life couple in a long-term relationship of the same HIV status," he said. "There is a warning at the beginning of the film advising people of this special situation. Since most people in this type of relationship have condomless sex, I don’t feel that it is incorrect to allow it in the video. I trust that viewers are intelligent enough to understand the difference between this and a ‘bareback’ film. Sarava Productions doesn’t promote or condone unsafe sex practices." He also acknowledged concerns from industry peers like Titan Media. "While I respect Titan’s politics, we may not see eye-to-eye on this point."

A few days later, I heard from Keith Webb, Titan Media's Vice-President. He made it clear that our interview was not directed to anyone specifically, and instead was meant to speak to the industry at large. His main concern is that directors, producers and studio heads facing a decline in DVD sales may "turn to bareback as the cure [or that] somehow bareback will be the magic bullet to save them. This is simply not the case." Mr. Webb identifies the main culprit for declining revenues as "online piracy and slow transition to digital distribution."

He describes Titan Media as one of the only gay adult companies that "aggressively protects" their content online. (It should be noted that Sarava Productions is another, tirelessly headed up by Mr. Bjorn's longtime aide-de-camp, Barry "The Bear" Gollop.)

Notes Mr. Webb, "We are running a double-digit increase for 2007" and "even our hard product DVD sales are up over last year. It's not bareback that consumers want, it's good content! If you make good content and if you protect it, your sales will be just fine!"

Mr. Webb is concerned that the digital squeeze "may drive people to try desperate things, things that they may well regret in the long run. When I see people in the industry contemplating bareback to try and sell films it just makes me sad. Before going down the bareback path you had damn well better be sure it's the right path."

(For the record, Mr. Gollop asserted last week that there was "no doubt in my mind that greed, money or [publicity]" had anything to do with Mr. Bjorn's decision to include the condomless scene in EL RANCHO, noting that "he has never been someone who was interested in making as much money as he possibly could, cutting corners to save a few bucks, or doing a publicity stunt to get the attention of the industry.")

Mr. Webb acknowledges the willingness of some performers to go condomless onscreen. "There are plenty of coal miners that will go down into the mine without safety equipment if you pay them [enough]," he says. "But, in the end, if they get hurt or killed you are the one that is going to be held responsible. It doesn't matter whether or not they agreed to do it. You paid them to do it and you are liable. People had better think long and hard before they make a decision that will affect the rest of their lives."

He notes that "artistic or freedom of choice issues" are another matter. If those are your reasons for going bareback, "then at least have the balls to stand, be proud of what you do and defend it. If you are going to do bareback because you think you can sell a few extra pieces, then you are a sad excuse for a human being. And you can quote me!"

LUCAS ENTERTAINMENT: Larger Than Life

Uncle! Uncle! No more lashes with a wet noodle. Please!

Okay, look: Last week in another article I made reference to "The Big Eight," a.k.a. the top eight gay adult entertainment companies: Bel Ami, Channel 1 Releasing, COLT Studio, Falcon Studios, Hot House Video, Raging Stallion Studios, Sarava Productions, Titan Media. (They used to be "The Big Ten" until Catalina Video went off the map and was later absorbed by Channel 1, who also gobbled up All Worlds Video.)

I made reference to a number of other companies as "boutique" labels, including Lucas Entertainment, although I wrote this designation was "arguable." Boy, howdy, did I step into it with that innocuous statement.

I caught it from many Michael Lucas fans. I heard from Lucas Entertainment employees. The consensus would seem to be that Lucas Entertainment has earned it's placement among "The Big Nine."

"They won Best Picture two years in a row, which nobody has done in many years" says Rob from West Hollywood, "And I didn't even know that until I read your column! And you can't say that DANGEROUS LIAISONS and MICHAEL LUCAS' LA DOLCE VITA weren't the two most talked-about gay pornos in the last few years."

"I'm a New Yorker and maybe that's why you West Coasters ignore the porn industry on this side of the country," writes Luis of, yes, New York. "Michael Lucas gets written up in Page Six and other magazines, he's on the red carpet, he is a major presence on the New York pop culture scene. Name one other porn director, actor or studio owner who can claim that."

Says Robert of Los Angeles, "I've been reading your column for a long time and I have to disagree with your slotting Michael Lucas' company as a 'boutique' studio. He's got a biography out there, photographers seek him out, he's so well-known now he's getting sued! Isn't that a mark of true success?"

AMG BRASIL: Danny Roddick Goes Brazilian

After weeks of teasing, AMG Brasil has revealed the identity of the American porn actor imported to South American to be cornholed by the biggest, thickest cocks on the continent: Danny Roddick.

Danny Roddick is known to gossip-friendly porn fans as half of last year's Porn Power Couple with Alex Chandler.And this isn't the first time he's been ravaged by his overseas counterparts: He and Mr. Chandler were gang-banged by Eastern Europe's finest in last year's HOSTILE on COLT's Olympus line.

The film is set for release in October. "I knew I'd be ripped a new one, no matter which [hung costar] I went with," Mr. Roddick cheekily notes. "I eventually went with what looked like the easiest option and after the first few thrusts I was in heaven."

AMG Brasil had been running a contest allowing readers to guess Mr. Roddick's identity. An iPhone, DVDs and "props from the set of AMAZôNIA" will be awarded to the winner next week via AMGstudio.com/wordpress.
