INDUSTRY UPDATE: JASON RIDGE: NEW STUDIO, FREE HARLOW CUADRA

Popular performer Jason Ridge announced on his blog this week the formation of Ridgeline Films, a development he has been teasing for some months. Production recently wrapped in Palm Springs on the debut title for the boutique label, helmed by Dylan Ryan and a cast that includes Roman Heart. Joining Ridgeline Films are famed party promoter Jeffrey Sanker and performer Rob Romoni (as production manager). Distribution and other details are pending.

Instantly popular upon his 2002 debut, thanks in part to his dreamboat good looks and acting training, Jason Ridge won the 2004 GAYVN Award for Best Newcomer and shared the cover (with Alex Collack and Marco Paris) of the 2006 Adam Gay Video Directory as a co-exclusive for Hot House Video. He has appeared in nearly 50 films, including this year's GAYVN-winning Best Picture MICHAEL LUCAS' LA DOLCE VITA (Lucas Entertainment), SUPER SOAKED (Jocks Studios), THE VELVET MAFIA 1-2 (Falcon Studios) and WET PALMS (Jet Set Productions).

Mr. Ridge has also taken on a new cause: Advocating for the release from prison and exoneration of Harlow Cuadra, who is currently facing murder charges in the death of Cobra Video's Bryan Kocis.

"I'm on a campaign along with a few other people to help the accused Harlow Cuadra fight this unjust accusation towards him," Mr. Ridge wrote in a June 29 blog entry. He has joined at least one other person, currently unnamed, to set up a defense fund for Mr. Cuadra. He notes, "I'm just not buying all of this. I believe that someone else caused the death of Kocis and this person happens to be in the adult film industry and it is all a set-up. I'm just going on a gut feeling and hearing from Harlow from prison and a certain person trying to get a scoop and rights to exploit Harlow even more drives me to want to help him more."

It's Wednesday, so it must be time for another gay porn mug shot. Performer Tommy Saxx, who worked as a hospital technician in Grapevine, Texas, was arrested for going on a shopping spree with the stolen credit cards of a patient, a police officer, who died in the emergency room of Baylor Medical Center.

I'm a bit behind the curve on reporting this story because, well, Christ, this crime spree among our guys is just exhausting. Enough, already.

Mr. Saxx, 29, whose real name is Dandy David Wiles, was charged with "fraudulent use of or possession of identifying information," per one report, "a state jail felony that carries a maximum penalty of two years in jail." The cards were apparently stolen a month ago and the theft was not uncovered until the deceased patient's wife received the bill. Mr. Wiles was identified from surveillance video in an electronics store where he had purchased a television. He was arrested Tuesday, June 19th and freed later that day when he posted $5,000 bail.

Tommy Saxx appeared in roughly 20 films between 1998 and 2002, among them CALIFORNIA GOLD (Junior Studio, 2000); THE COCKPIT CLUB (Tribal Pulse, 2000); IN GEAR (Rascal Video, 2001); JEFF PALMER RAW (Hot Desert Knights, 2002) and SHOCK PART 2 (Mustang Studios, 2001), as well as the compilation THE BEST OF TOMMY SAXX (Catalina Video, 2002).

The gay porn grapevine went a little nutso over the past 24 hours. Hits to our sites were ablaze with the search terms "Gus Mattox death" and "Gus Mattox died." Further, the GAYVN-winning Performer of the Year wasn't the only one for whom reports of his death have been, as they say, greatly exaggerated. Dancer, nonsex performer and jack-of-all-trades Adam Killian (perhaps best known for Jet Set's THE HOLE) has also been the subject of premature-death rumors lately.

I tracked 'em both down today. And they're fine. "Me and Mark Twain, huh?" said Mr. Mattox. "Maybe I should post a photo of me with today's newspaper as 'proof of life.' I will admit that I feel almost dead after the major construction I did on my house. But, dead or alive, it's when they stop talking about you you have to worry." He asked me to post a clarification, a request that I am only too happy to fulfill. "I'd hate to think my Mom was catching up on her gay porn news and read her baby boy Gus had bitten the dust," Mr. Mattox quipped. "Especially as I have that Tupperware to return."


I tracked down Mr. Killian soon after speaking with Gus Mattox. "Wow, that's an odd one," he told me by email. "It's the first I've heard of it." I told him that several fans had actually emailed their concerns in notes filled with exclamation points and sad-faced emoticons. Mr. Killian joked, "At least [they] sounded upset by that piece of misinformation!" So there you have it, Constant Readers. Nothing to see here. (Whew!)

DARK ALLEY SCAMPS

Upstart studio Dark Alley Media got tongues wagging with the announcement a few weeks ago of GAY BOMB, a sex-satire in the vein of their recent GAYTANAMO, which ruffled a few feathers. Mainstream-ish bloggers also took note. The Wired.com blog, "Danger Room" recently linked to Dark Alley's press release announcing the film and snarked, "Military technology has inspired some of history's greatest films: Firefox, Stealth, Crimson Tide...the list is practically endless. But never, to the best of my knowledge, has a gay porn house dared to [plant] in this arena, strived to go head to head with these timeless classics. Friends, I can now report that this imbalance has been rectified."

With the GAYTANAMO kerfluffle barely settled, those Dark Alley scamps, headed up by performer Owen Hawk and performer-director Matthias von Fistenberg, had the grapevine buzzing today with the announcement of another new film available for pre-order now: VON FISTENBERG'S 8 1/2 costarring Dark Alley's Demetrius, Danny Fox and Aaron King with Dillon Buck, Adam Faust and Tim Kruger. In an email titled, "A Masterpiece Revealed!" the company notes, "Rarely in the history of modern film does a classic like this appear. PR ROUNDUP: Gay-Only Raging Stallion Signs Gay-for-Pay Brodie Sinclair

Raging Stallion Studios announced today the signing of Brodie Sinclair to an exclusive contract. One of GayPornLand's "It" studs of the moment, Mr. Sinclair is also known as "Derek Brodie," the name he was given in LONGBOARD (although a topman, check out that world class ass on the DVD cover!) and BASIC PLUMBING 3 for Falcon Studios.

He is also gay-for-pay, and although in the past Raging Stallion has pledged to hire only gay performers, in this particular case, they've changed their minds.

The 24-year-old is definitely part of the 21st-Century brat pack of skin stars who earn their reps online before crossing over to old-media DVDs. He used the "Brodie Sinclair" sobriquet as a featured player for RandyBlue.com and CollegeDudes247.com. As "Robbie" he was a popular stud with AmateurStraightGuys.com; as "Brodie" he appeared for JakeCruise.com on their addictive "Straight Guys for the Gay Eye" site.

Per the press release, Mr. Sinclair is set for 10 scenes to be filmed over the next 12 months (!). Two scenes are already in the can, including a matchup with newcomer musclebod Roman Ragazzi. He will next appear in the military-themed GRUNTS to shoot later this summer.

RSS describes Brodie Sinclair as "all-American, confident, current...who is about as photogenic as they come." He is also, per the studio, "not fully gay," an interesting twist given Raging Stallion's highly vocal pledges in the past to never hire gay-for-pay performers. Per their press release, the company decided to make an exception. "Brodie is straight," says director and RSS founder Chris Ward, "but he is about as gay as you can get! He is a modern American male who sees opportunity [in] every sexual encounter. The man is a fuck machine and he loves it all. How could we say no?"

* Keep an eye on The Advocate in the next week or so (sources tell me) for their big expose on the Timothy Boham (a.k.a. Marcus Allen) murder case. (Mr. Boham's next hearing is July 12th.)

* Yep, it's true: Trevor Knight has decided to hang it up. In a blog entry titled "It's Been Long Enough" at MySpace.com/TrevKnightXXX he notes that after winning his three trophies at the recent Grabby Awards "it's time for me to stop. I've been fighting with the idea of stopping for awhile now. Now I think it's time to go. I've done it the best I could and now it's just time for me to move on. * I'm a bit behind the curve on this, but Lucas Entertainment has acquired distribution rights to BUCKBACK MOUNTAIN from director Lawrence Roberts and starring the 2007 AVN Transsexual Performer of the Year, Buck Angel. Mr. Angel is the first FTM transsexual to take the AVN trophy and was the center of quite of a bit of debate over his appearance in Titan Media's CIRQUE NOIR. We ran pics from his very sexy threeway with Tober Brandt and Logan Steele in XXX Showcase last year and reader response was heated. But there's no debate that Buck Angel is a strong, charismatic performer.

In his publicity squib, Mr. Angel says, "This is the film that is going to complete my transition from niche performer to mainstream adult star. BEAUTY SHOT: Max Schutler

One of the most exciting discoveries of recent vintage is the lovely, buffed out Max Schutler, a 25-year-old pup from Argentina. NEW RELEASE DESK: Titan Media

Twelve months ago Titan Media had the spectacularly raunchy FOLSOM FILTH out in time for the Folsom Street Festival. Now it's FOLSOM LEATHER from director Brian Mills and toplining one of my crushes, the furry cuddlebear Alex Baresi. As we revealed last week, it is the "Exclusive Leather/Fetish Film" of this year's Folsom Street fest, and a portion of the proceeds from sales of the movie will be donated to a special fund that supports nonprofits dedicated to gay men's health.

FOLSOM FILTH runs nearly five hours on two discs. Mr. Baresi turns up in the second scene to get fucked by newcomer Butch Grand and good ol' Arpad Miklos (and fisted by Mr. Grand, too). Always great to see Mr. Miklos sexing up some panting bottom. He's certainly made a lot of movies over the last few years, but we're not tired of him yet. Costars include Tober Brandt, Brendan Davies, Adam Faust, David Korben, Francois Sagat, rising newcomer Tyler Saint and Rick Van Sant.

Not convinced yet? Check out this bit from the publicity release: "Extras on the director's expanded edit version include additional dildo, flogging and fisting scenes," interviews with Messrs. Sagat and Van Sant, plus "watersports and fisting compilations." That version is not available in stores.

While we're on the subject of raunch, has anyone else noticed the rise of watersports in "mainstream" porn of late? I'm up for anything in the boudoir but watersports has never done it for me. It's curious that golden showers are enjoying a new vogue; piss is so old school it's new again.

Adonis Pictures is back on the boards with their first new picture in about a year. BED HEADS 2: BUTT HEADS is a sequel to one of the young studio's first hits and reunites writer/director/videographer Ross Cannon with leading men Trevor Knight and Bobby Williams. AVN.com reports that FBI agents visited FilmCo Productions Wednesday, June 20 to inspect paperwork for five adult titles from Filmco and Bacchus Releasing. This is the third 2257 paperwork investigation in recent weeks, including a June 1 inspection at gay amateur studio JT Video. There are no details as to which Bacchus titles the agents asked after. "They were very polite and professional," FilmCo's general manager told AVN.com. "All went well. They asked for directions to a restaurant, packed up and left."

Never mind about catching musclebod Mark Dalton together with Zeb Atlas this coming weekend for Houston Gay Pride, where they were scheduled to appear in the Pride Parade among other personal appearances. He is currently a guest of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Mr. Dalton's agent, David Forest, spelled out some details in an email this afternoon. "Mark is being held in custody by the TDCJ due to [an] 'altercation' he had on May 31. They haven't made any decision, yet, on his future parole status. They basically stopped his parole, temporarily, because he had a run-in with the police. That run-in involved two misdemeanors that, as of today, he has not been charged with."

Per Mr. Forest, those two misdemeanors are Assault/Family Violence and Interference with a 911 Call. He was arrested May 31 and posted $7500 bail the following day. Mr. Dalton made the further mistake of failing to inform his parole officer and on June 11 a warrant was issued for his arrest. He has been awaiting charges to be filed since being incarcerated June 13. Mr. Forest says there is nothing Mark Dalton can do "but sit there and wait. Three weeks after his arrest, however, there are still no charges filed and it is possible there will be none. We can't assume he is at fault or that anyone is pressing charges."

Mark Dalton and Zeb Atlas are the headlining duo in the hotly anticipated new film MARK MEETS ZEB: THE TEXAS TWO-STEP.

Have you seen the new Mustang Studios flick LIMITS? Costar Trey Casteel is on the DVD cover and he's never looked tastier or more studly. Mr. Gobo's name is familiar if you pay attention to porn credits. His career began ten years ago when he took on lighting/camera duties for Hot House Video, then served as staff videographer for Raging Stallion Studios until 2002. From there he freelanced for Bear Films and other companies, ran the Factory Video editing department and eventually landed at Falcon.

"He definitely has an eye for fetish," the studio tells me. "Rougher guys, rougher action is the type of movie he prefers to direct and directs best. He's a good fit for Mustang."

Lucas Entertainment has added something new to their online store: music. They are now selling the debut CD from Nekked, titled "A Barrier of Skin." The partnership makes sense, as Nekked's scoring for MICHAEL LUCAS' LA DOLCE VITA won a GAYVN Award for Best Music several months ago.

Nekked is the collaboration of musicians (and real-life boyfriends) JC Faust and the mononamed Sinn, who met in New York City in 2002 and soon afterwards began performing together.

Although this is a new venture for Lucas Entertainment, it's not the first time a porn company has distributed music CDs: Titan Media has produced a handful of soundtrack CDs from their films, and Raging Stallion Studios has made the music of co-founder JD Slater available to consumers as well.

Titan Media has announced a three-year deal to become the "exclusive gay adult studio at the Presenting Sponsor level" for the Folsom Street Fair and Up Your Alley festivals. Titan will share Presenting Sponsor level duties with Miller Beer and NakedSword.com. This is the first time the venerable event has formed such a pact with an adult studio.

In a statement, Demetri Moshoyannis, Executive Director of Folsom Street Events, lauds the "special philanthropic relationship" with the studio. "We hope to raise and distribute more grant money than we have in the past. Last year, Folsom Street Events gave away $301,512 to charity, and I believe we can exceed that amount with the help of Titan Media and our generous sponsors."

As they did last year with FOLSOM FILTH, Titan has agreed to "co-brand" several leather/fetish films that will be promoted as the "Exclusive Leather/Fetish Films of the Folsom Street Fair." Further, they have pledged to donate "a portion of sales from the line of DVDs" to a new TitanMen/Folsom Fund with a minimum $20,000 yearly contribution. Notes Keith Webb, Vice President of Titan Media, "We hope to lead by example and influence others in the adult business community to be more financially generous with their support of non-profit community based organizations."

The next Up Your Alley festival is set for Sunday, July 29th, followed by the Folsom Street Fair on Sunday, September 30th.

So, yeah, this year I ragged on the GAYVN Awards organizers for scheduling their San Francisco extravaganza on the night before the Academy Awards. Setting the "gay porn Oscars" on the night before the gay High Holy Day!? What were they thinking? Well, no need to worry about that next year. The 80th Annual Academy Awards unspool Sunday, February 24th...one week after the 10th Annual GAYVN Awards on Saturday, February 16th. They'll be held again in San Francisco.

Out running errands in West Hollywood early this ayem, I ran into good ol' Bret Wolfe. We caught up on this-and-that; he hasn't appeared in a blue movie since 2005's WET PALMS 7-9 (Jet Set). But just because he hasn't been making porn doesn't mean he's not acting. Mr. Wolfe scored a supporting role in the gay indie drama Back Soon, written and directed by Rob Williams. My old pals at Tango Blues Entertainment have embarked on a new venture. JABB Management has been launched to "handle the talent management and touring needs of the adult entertainment industry," (per the press release) with a special focus on the gay-bi market.

Tango Blues' Andrew Briskin, a.k.a. Drew Warner, will serve as prexy, while Blake Riley, performer and co-exclusive between RandyBlue.com and Rascal Video, has been tapped as JABB's first Talent Director.

Mr. Briskin formed JABB to not only book adult industry performers for filmed projects and at nightclubs and other live performance venues across the country, but also to "protect their financial well-being [and] their brand."

First on the docket: "Blue Blake's THE MUSCLE PIT Tour" courtesy of Big Blue Productions. The 31st Annual Frameline Film Festival, San Francisco’s LGBT fest, landed the COLT Studio Group as an event sponsor. The festival unspools through June 24th prior to San Francisco Gay Pride. Several years ago the fest premiered COLT’s eXposed: The Making of a Legend, their BUCKLEROOS 1-2 making-of documentary. GayPornLand was buzzing late in the week with the news that tiny gay amateur studio JT Video got a visit from the FBI as part of the government's ongoing investigation into adult entertainment's paperwork and recordkeeping practices. The company told AVN.com that federal agents were interested in only two 1997 titles: FOUR ROOMS and EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH. Both were purchased via AMVC.com, which specializes in amateur blue movies, and agents "had printouts of the disclaimers...at the heads of the tapes and DVD box covers." Agents did not explain why these two films were targeted other than to say that it was a random search.

Agents found what AVN.com termed "two minor violations." The first resulted from JT Video's use of a post office box "as a mail drop address for location of records." The company's owner admits he knew about this particular violation "but I just never felt comfortable having my home address published and don't have an office to use," he explained.

"The second violation involved JT's business hours," AVN notes. "In order to allow the FBI agents to inspect company records, 2257 law requires adult businesses to maintain at least 20 business hours per week." In the case of JT Video, adult entertainment is not the owner's primary business. "I don't know how to rectify that situation," he says. "How does one [maintain 20 hours] when it's just a sideline?"

JT's owner also notes that he "wasn't expecting them to ask for a spreadsheet [with performer names], and fortunately, I prepared that years ago and had it on my computer. If I didn't have that, it would have been another violation!"

He was told by the visiting agents that JT Video would likely not be prosecuted for these violations and would probably only be assessed a fine. "Probably" is the key word here as only the Department of Justice can determine JT Video's punishment and the company has no idea when judgment will be passed down.

There's another wrinkle that caught certain quarters of gay adult by surprise. Both EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH and FOUR ROOMS are ten years old and JT Video assumed that made the films exempt from federal recordkeeping requirements. Wrong. While it's true that adult movies more than seven years old are excluded from revamped 2257 regulations, this pair had been reissued on DVD five years ago with a 2003 copyright and that means they fell within the seven-year statute of limitations. This touched off some panic among other gay adult companies wondering if they should pull all of their Golden Age titles. I'll be in touch with the Free Speech Coalition for clarification. "DIRTY DEEDS" ONE YEAR LATER
"Dirty Deeds," the weekly raunch-and-roll party at West Hollywood's Fubar from promoter Michael Schmidt and directrix Chi Chi LaRue recently celebrated its one-year anniversary Wednesday, May 30th. Aww, they grow up so fast! The tiny bar was packed to the rafters. Needless to say, some of the guests were taking part in some very, very dirty deeds. The very first "Dirty Deeds" featured dancer, Rascal Exclusive Claudio Martin, made a surprise guest appearance and Ms. LaRue told me later she was touched and surprised that he flew in from New York (and retirement) to make the party.

I got there around 10:30pm, just as things were starting to cook and two lovely, tanned pups had jumped atop the postage stamp-sized stage to shake their shapely, well-oiled rumps. I was supposed to meet up with man-about-town Marshall O Boy, but he hadn't arrived yet. I live around the corner and made the snap decision to trot home for a quick disco nap, fully intending to come back out at the witching hour. Well, kids, Daddy was very disappointed when he blearily woke four hours later at 3am...

In any case, among the guests were COLT studs Luke Garrett and Gage Weston (still getting recognized on the street from his recent cameo on the Bravo reality series Work Out), performers Chad Hunt, Christian Owen, Lex Sabre and Scott Swan, West Hollywood social director Jonathan Chang, director Wash West, shutterbug Mocha, Real World alum Norm Korpi and tons more familiar faces from the Los Angeles and New York underground scene.

MICHAEL LUCAS: DILDOS & BOOKS
The Michael Lucas dildo is now available. The Lucas Entertainment mogul sent along a complementary member with a handwritten note that cheerfully read, "Go fuck yourself!" With pleasure, Mr. Lucas.

He's also firmly disassociating himself, again, from Corey Taylor's "Naked: The Life and Pornography of Michael Lucas" (Kensington Press). I've had the lowdown on this biography for over a year and Mr. Lucas was pointedly distancing himself back then. Over on LucasBlog.com, he recently wrote that "(u)mpteen journalists have requested interviews about this book" and that he has refused them all.

He writes (with typically self-aware wryness), "This so-called writer contacted me about two years ago, saying he would love to write a book about me. I agreed to a series of interviews. All of them took place over the phone. I never actually met the fellow. At some point I decided it was time to see some substantive material, so I asked Mr. Taylor to send me his draft. I've read quite a few books, including countless biographies. The manuscript Mr. Taylor sent me was an unmitigated disaster. The thought of being represented to the world by means of such shoddy literary craftsmanship made me sick in the pit of my stomach."

"You can tell from the award-winning stylishness of my recent films that artistic style is vitally important to me," he says. "Why would I want my name associated with something that does not live up to the high standards I set for myself? The reason I did not want to give Mr. Taylor so much as a paper bag after seeing his catastrophic manuscript was that I knew he could not write his way out of a paper bag and I did not have the heart to see him stuck in one."

On the other side, no less an authority than the American Library Association's Booklist notes that while the adult biz "has arguably entered the pop-cultural mainstream," Mr. Lucas "is likely a cipher to most readers [even though] he is a gay male porn actor, producer—and tart-tongued spokesman." Describing him as "dynamic and charismatic" the Booklist reviewer notes this biography is "(f)ull of great inside information about an important pop-cultural presence [and] belongs in gay studies as well as movie collections."

In other news, Michael Lucas is also taking on the cause of gay bashings in New York's Chelsea neighborhood and environs. He is currently collecting stories for an upcoming column in New York's "Blade" magazine and intends to take the police department to task for being "completely unresponsive" (his words) to the attacks.

FRANÇOIS SAGAT'S DNA
Just recently it was Eddie Stone in the Aussie gay-laddie mag DNA and now it's François Sagat, the reigning GAYVN winner for Performer of the Year.
