NEW YORK CITY -- Conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly used his "O'Reilly Factor" Fox News program tonight, February 28th, to harshly criticize San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom for declaring February 23 as "COLT Studio Day" in honor of the company's 40th anniversary.
Pictured here are COLT honchos Tom Settle and John Rutherford with San Francisco Assemblyman Mark Leno at the COLT 40th party.
"The mayor of San Francisco [signed] a proclamation honoring a gay porn outfit," an outraged Mr. O'Reilly teased before a commercial break. "[You're] not gonna believe it!" Before a second commercial break he teased again, "Can it be true?"
Mr. O'Reilly's ire was apparently raised by an article in the San Francisco Chronicle and when Fox staffers confronted Mr. Newsom, on-camera, he denied knowledge of it.
Mr. O'Reilly declared Gavin Newsom was "out of control" and called for disciplinary action for the staffer who originated the proclamation. "I hope it doesn't involve whips and chains," he quipped.
During the segment photos from the COLT 40th Anniversary party were flashed onscreen. They included Carlo Masi popping from a large cake as well as Danny Roddick posing with a fully made-up Sister Roma of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. "And you wonder why your city is mocked...as a modern day Sodom," Mr. O'Reilly intoned as (for good measure) flamboyant images of drag queens and half-naked revelers from a gay pride parade flashed onscreen.
On his blog this week, COLT's President and Creative Director John Rutherford responded to O'Reilly's complaints, and in particular criticized former city supervisor Angela Alioto who was a guest during the segment. "I'm not really upset about Bill O'Reilly's usual rants and raves about San Francisco," Mr. Rutherford wrote, "but to have Angela Alioto as a guest talking badly about the gay adult industry really gets my goat. I stood next to Chuck Holmes (founder of Falcon Studios now deceased) many a times at HRC dinners and various political fund raisers here in San Francisco when Angela was scratching at Chuck for donations to support her mayoral intentions. Why now Angela? What a hypocrite you truly are."
