The Adams Report by J.C. Adams
February 12 - 18, 2007

We're uncovering GAYVN Awards trivia this week in The Adams Report by JC Adams. Which studio could earn the first back-to-back Best Picture win in 12 years? Which company's Best Picture win would earn them a record-tying fifth (!) win in the category? Who has the rare chance to become only the fourth model in GAYVN history to win both Best Newcomer and Performer of the Year? Plus, this year one of three sexy studs could snag a whopping four chunks of hardware and make porn awards history. Keep reading for more tantalizing trivia!

GAYVNS BY STUDIO
The GAYVN Awards are fast approaching. Winners will be announced Saturday, February 24th at the Castro Theater in San Francisco, the first time that the "gay porn Oscars" will be presented in that fair city. (And I am not the only one who is a bit irked that the GAYVNs are again unspooling on Oscar weekend, but that's the way it goes.) Comedian and reality-TV star Kathy Griffin will host the show, which ought to go a long way towards selling out the 1400-seat Castro. GAYVNawards.com has all the scoop.

Lucas Entertainment's MICHAEL LUCAS' LA DOLCE VITA leads all films with 14 nominations, including Best Picture. The studio shared Best Picture last year in a controversial tie with Rascal Video's WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS 1-2. If they take the top award two years running, Lucas Entertainment will become only the second gay adult company to accomplish this rare feat and the first since Falcon Studios' famous threepeat in 1993 (ABDUCTION 2-3), 1994 (FLASHPOINT) and 1995 (THE RENEGADE).

Falcon leads all studios with five overall wins for Best Picture since Adult Video News first began honoring gay films in 1985. (Their other wins came in 1988 for TOUCH ME and 2002 for DEEP SOUTH 1-2).

All Worlds Video has four Best Picture wins: 1990's MORE OF A MAN, 1992's KISS-OFF, 1996's FLESH & BLOOD, 2002's THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS: GLUTTONY. They could match Falcon's tally if they snag the trophy this year for DELINQUENTS. Either way, they would be far ahead of everyone else. The only other studio with multiple Best Picture triumphs is Catalina Video with two (POWERTOOL in 1986 and UNDERCOVER in 1989). A surprising 11 other studios have one win apiece.

Two of those 11 companies are in position to snag their second win this year (if not the back-to-back claim). Jet Set Productions took top honors in 2003 with THE HOLE and they're back this year with GOING UNDER, while Buckshot Productions won for BUCKLEROOS 1-2 in 2004 and have two chances this year to snag the hardware: BIG RIG and BOOT BLACK BLUES.

Among this year's Best Picture contenders are three major studios seeking their first Best Picture win: Hot House Video, Raging Stallion Studios and Titan Media, who are in contention withJUSTICE, ARCADE ON ROUTE 9 and LORDS OF THE JUNGLE, respectively.

GAYVNS BY MODEL
The wondrous Francois Sagat leads all performers with a whopping six nominations: Best Sex Scene and Threesome for MANIFESTO, another Sex Scene nod for BEDROOM EYES, Solo Performance for MANHATTAN, yet another Best Threesome for LEBANON and a spectacularly well-deserved Gay Performer of the Year nom. All of his performance nominations are for Raging Stallion films. He could take four of 'em and enter the GAYVN record books. Only one other performer has won four trophies in a single night (the legendary Kurt Young in 1996) so Mr. Sagat has a real shot at a legendary night.

He's got serious competition in Trevor Knight and Shane Rollins, both of whom hold four nominations apiece and could steal Mr. Sagat's thunder. Three of Mr. Knight's noms are for three different movies, thus the Gay Performer of the Year citation. He's at the top of his game right now and rarely gives less than his best.

Then there's Shane Rollins, whose four citations recognize his work in Hot House's JUSTICE (amazingly, he was passed over for Performer of the Year). Mr. Rollins completely dominates JUSTICE and it's the kind of starmaking role that comes along only rarely. It's a performance that fans will revisit for years to come.

Another model has the chance to make GAYVN history. It's one of the puzzles of this year's set of nominations that Matt Cole is up for Best Newcomer and Gay Performer of the Year even though none of his specific performances were nominated. (Jason Tiya is another Performer of the Year nominee who had no specific scenes cited.)

However, it's unusual for a model making his debut to also earn a citation for the prestigious Performer of the Year. And it's even more unusual for him to snag both trophies. GAYVN began honoring newcomers in 1989 and established the best-performer category five years later. Since then the two categories have matched up only three times: Kurt Young's legendary 1996 debut, Jim Buck's 1998 triumph and Spike's well-earned wins in 1999. This year only Matt Cole has the opportunity to repeat that unusual feat. (Mr. Young and Mr. Buck are also the only two men to actually win the extraordinarily rare triple crown: Best Actor, Best Newcomer and Performer of the Year.)

GAYVNS BY CREW
Lucas Entertainment's Tony DiMarco already has one trophy on his mantelpiece, a Best Screenplay chunk of Lucite for last year's DANGEROUS LIAISONS. This year he could potentially add four companions as he leads all behind-the-scenes crew with a quartet of nods for MICHAEL LUCAS' LA DOLCE VITA: Best Director (shared with Michael Lucas), Editing, Screenplay and Videography.

GAYVN Hall of Famer Andrew Rosen is set for a very good night: His GOING UNDER for Jet Set Productions is up for Best Picture (although he did not earn a directing nod) and he's earned two individual Best Editing citations for GOING UNDER and Falcon Studios' THE VELVET MAFIA 1-2. He's gonna have to figure out a way to make room in his trophy case if takes another one home because Mr. Rosen has already won five times (!) in the editing category.

GAYVN established the Best Foreign Release category in 1998. Since then All Worlds International (1998's IMPROMPTUS), Studio 2000 International (2002's SPANISH UPRISING) and Oh Man! International (2003's LEGIONNAIRES) have managed one win apiece. Kristen Bjorn's Sarava Productions has two wins and although his superb FIRE DANCE is up for numerous awards (including personal nods for Mr. Bjorn's direction, editing and videography) the movie is oddly not up for Best Foreign Release. Eh, that Best Picture nod is sufficient compensation, right?

FIRE DANCE getting shut out of the Best Foreign Release category gives Bel Ami a chance to extend their winning streak to a third year, following 2004's GREEK HOLIDAY 1-2 and 2005's LUKAS IN LOVE 1-2 (they also won back in 1999 for LUCKY LUKAS). This year their lovely, sensual PINA COLADA is in contention.
