MIDWEEK INDUSTRY UPDATES
LAMBERT STEPS BEHIND CAMERA
Longtime reviewer Vincent Lambert recently put down his pen and stepped behind the camera to direct his first XXX scene -- and he was inspired to do so by, ahem, me (blush). He helmed a scene for the forthcoming ENCOUNTERS 2 for Lucas Entertainment.
"I guess it is just a natural progression of what I have done and what I am interested in doing," Mr. Lambert told me. "After watching and reviewing so many movies, I have a definite perspective on what I like and don't like." He chose Lucas Entertainment for his directing debut after viewing the company's "top-notch work. [And] porn journalists like J.C. Adams inspired me and made me think that I could direct, too!" ENCOUNTERS 2 will be released April 15th; the first ENCOUNTERS featured a scene directed by dragstress RuPaul.
COACH FIRED FOR GAY PORN PAST
A 22-year-old tumbling coach at Mater Dei Catholic High School in Breese, Illinois named Josh Weast was fired after the school principal uncovered evidence that Mr. Weast had appeared in several gay porn films. The Associated Press newswire report went live Monday morning and quickly shot around the gay grapevine. Mr. Weast's MySpace.com profile was soon located and his porn persona revealed: Andrew Bryant, with CROSS COUNTRY 1 and DRIVER on his resume, both from Falcon Studios.
Mr. Weast told reporters that he "regretted making the videos," but that he'd needed the money and, further, "his private life should have no effect on his coaching abilities." We agree on that count, at least.
BITS AND BOBS
Five-year-old sparky upstart D&E Productions has signed an exclusive distribution arrangement with director Rick Warner's SurfSide Studios. The first title under the new arrangement will be SEXY SURFERS in April...
Pulse Distribution tells "The Adams Report by J.C. Adams" that the release date for animator Joe Phillips' erotic, feature-length adventure STONEWALL & RIOT (featuring gorgeous, gay superheroes) has been bumped to June 19th to allow Mr. Phillips a bit more time to complete his post-production duties. His last erotically animated epic was 2001's acclaimed HOUSE OF MORECOCK...
Chalk up another XXX take on Brokeback Mountain: Following the forthcoming BI-BACK MOUNTAIN (All Worlds Video) and BAREBACK MOUNTAIN (1R Media), comes Brazilian import DUDE RANCH STUDS billed by distributor Colossal Entertainment as "its own spin on cowboys in love" although, per the press release, it "stands on its own merits." We should hope so...
The Grapevine: Folks are talking about that popular newcomer who recently went bareback onscreen. Several major studios went to some effort to promote the gorgeous stud. His decision to ditch the condoms on film means they will no longer employ him due to their publicly stated policy against bareback titles and the models who appear in them, out of concern they will be seen as tacitly promoting unsafe sex. "I'm not surprised he did it," one insider tells me, "because he wanted to work without condoms from the beginning. But now he's banned from two or three major studios -- permanently." Tune in to next week's "Adams Report" for more details...

The Adams Report by J.C. Adams
March 20 - 26, 2006
It's been almost two weeks since the rowdiest GAYVN Awards in years and the fallout is still settling over Michael Lucas' incendiary comments from the podium which prompted booing, hissing and thrown ice from JD Slater at the Raging Stallion Studios table. Even though various industry bigwigs (Messrs. Lucas and Slater as well as Chi Chi LaRue and Chris Ward) have been kissing and making up -- Mr. Slater apologized to Mr. Lucas, who apologized to Ms. LaRue, etc. -- there are still some ruffled feathers and hurt feelings that should be soothed before anyone gets in the same room together where alcohol (and ice) is being served.
Okay, a quick recap: As noted in this space, the 8th Annual GAYVN Awards went down Thursday, March 9th at Rage nightclub in West Hollywood, followed immediately after by the official afterparty cohosted by Channel 1 Releasing and SureFlix.com. In a night of upset victories, no award was more shocking than the Best Picture tie between Lucas Entertainment's DANGEROUS LIAISONS and Rascal Video's WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS 1-2. Some people cheered, some booed, everyone gasped in surprise.
Why? In part because Ms. LaRue and Mr. Lucas have been lobbing spitballs at each other in the press (this column, their respective blogs, "AVN" and elsewhere) for months. And now the two would be sharing the stage together. Ms. LaRue was the show's host and she's a consummate pro; no one expected any thrown punches. But Mr. Lucas is a canny publicity expert; there's no one in gay porn today more skilled than this guy. (C'mon, last year he compared himself to Jesus Christ when he said "I'm also 33 years old and everyone wants to crucify me!") So when he got in front of the microphone and boldly declared, "Fuck you to everyone who didn't vote for me!" the response was predictable—people jeered, they groaned, they threw ice.
"It was a joke! A New York-style joke!" he told me this week via cell phone. Although he was 3000 miles away I could hear the steam hissing from his ears. "I cannot believe people are this upset over a stupid joke." He went on for a few minutes in this vein, swearing very creatively.
Mr. Lucas' ire was stoked by an open letter to the industry posted on GAYVN.com from Raging Stallion's JD Slater. "Dear Friends, I write this letter to set the record straight and to apologize to the management and staff of 'AVN' for my unfortunate lapse of character at this year's [show]," he says. He goes on to take responsibility and apologize for lobbing ice at Mr. Lucas, which Mr. Slater called "a knee-jerk reflex to [Mr. Lucas'] outrageous and uncalled-for 'fuck you' to the judges in particular but also to the industry in general."
Citing his three acclaimed decades on both sides of the camera in gay adult, Mr. Slater also lists personal hardships including "Senate investigations, indictments and extradition attempts, cancer, HIV, tuberculosis and a debilitating seizure condition. Through all of those periods it was members of our community (both print and video) that came to my aid…When I look upon the esteemed group assembled at [the GAYVNs] it is with the thankful eyes of a man who knows to whom he owes his success and life."
Mr. Slater explains that Mr. Lucas "insulted not only his co-winner Chi Chi…he insulted the whole room." He explains that he apologized to Mr. Lucas afterwards. However, "[o]nce again I say to Mr. Lucas that I have the utmost respect for you as a filmmaker, but that in the future perhaps you should consider that the path you now trod was paved by the work and sacrifice of others; others who might take offense when the efforts of their lives' work is condescendingly pissed on by a colleague they have graciously embraced…I offer my deepest and sincerest apologies for my unfortunate indiscretion. My intent was never to disrupt the event but rather to defend its honor."
To be fair to Mr. Slater, who is a friend of this column, he has dialed down the rhetoric since that letter was posted. But I also spoke to Ms. LaRue about the GAYVN brouhaha. On the one hand, the directrix was pleased with the high turnout. Always the industry's most ardent booster, she says "there are more companies…bringing more people. More porn stars want to go. And it's free. It's a place to be seen and it's a fun time for the industry to get together. [The Rage] was at maximum capacity! It's time to move it to a larger venue."
Moving onto the Best Picture imbroglio, Ms. LaRue says the tie "couldn't have been any more fabulously politically scandalous" and that when presenter Dean Phoenix announced the tie, "I knew it wasn't going to be me and ARABESQUE!" she laughs. "I knew it wasn't going to be me and BEYOND PERFECT! It wasn't gonna be Michael Lucas and [DECAMERON]! It was gonna be Michael Lucas and I so that they could see how we'd interact with each other." She paused for a moment to choose the right words. "And I was as gracious as I could be. And [people] are still talking about it."
I relayed to Ms. LaRue the quotes Mr. Lucas gave this column, that his comments were meant to be taken as a joke. "Sometimes the way Michael says things, it doesn't come out as a joke. People don't get it. And people think he's being completely arrogant. And I don't think so. I think he's a cartoon character. As I am! I'm a big, giant drag queen up there! He's a caricature of himself."
Ms. LaRue says she's had private moments with Michael Lucas in which he was more warm. And she remains offended by the crowd's reaction to Mr. Lucas' speech. "I don't like the fact that people booed. I don't like the fact that people threw things. It's rude. It brings everybody down a notch."
But Ms. LaRue also feels Michael Lucas needs to rein it in. "I think that Michael should take the time and talk to me outside of a party, outside of an awards show, with no cameras around. He owes me that. He said some really hurtful things about me this past year. I mean, he kept me [on his blog] constantly and gave me a lot of press." But enough's enough already? "I think so. He invited me to his birthday party and offered to send a limo for me. So do I think that Michael hates me? I don't know. He'll have to tell me. I don't know."
RIP: AUSTIN BLACK (1963 - 2006)
It is my unfortunate duty to pass on news of the death of yet another member of our community. Performer Austin Black died earlier this month in the Long Beach, California apartment he was renting from friend and fellow performer Randy Summers, who owns the building. It was Mr. Summers who discovered Mr. Black's body and informed the industry of his passing. He was found March 9th and per an initial assessment from the coroner he had been dead for several days. "All I was told by the coroner was 'natural causes.' He wasn't sick as far as any of us knew," Mr. Summers told me via email.
I haven't yet confirmed the specifics of his passing. How does an apparently healthy man of 43 suddenly die? Mr. Summers has promised to fill me in on the details as they become available. [03/26/06 Update: Mr. Summers, via Mr. Black's family, says the official cause of death was complications related to liver cancer.]
Austin Black's career in gay-XXX spans two decades, going all the way back to 1986. He committed dozens of films to celluloid, in many genres, and his legacy is informed by his status as one of the handful of non-Caucasian porn performers to achieve a notable level of fame. (He was black, Spanish and French-Canadian.) For a time in the late 1990’s he and ex-lover Frank Parker made up one of gay porn's most famous power couples, having met on the set of Brush Creek Media's THE BACHELOR PARTY (1997; d. Steve Landess).
Austin Black wasn't just another porno star. He was a mature man who was clear-eyed about the skin trade and his impact on gay culture. "First of all, I have a college education and didn't jump into the industry as some starry-eyed kid who wanted to be the next James Dean," he told an interviewer in 1999. "I have a degree in radio and television, so I take this industry as being just what it is. I don't do this to bolster my masculinity…(s)ome people in the industry have a lot of problems and they get into the industry with these problems already attached and can't deal with things like directors and people who want to use you up. You have to be smarter than the average Joe and not do stupid things [like abuse] drugs, alcohol."
Mr. Black was also quite aware that his mixed heritage set him apart. "I think it has helped me," he revealed in the same 1999 interview. "I can do all types of movies because I come from all types of people… Over the course of the years, there has been a push toward having all types of different-looking people in videos and that was the way porn started. Then in the '80s directors got sidetracked with one certain type. But today they have realized, 'Whoa, I can make a buck off these people, like black people, the Spanish people, the Asian people!'"
BIG SALAMI (Bijou Video), DUO #6 (Black Forest Productions) and JACK OFF (Eagle Studios) were produced in 1986 and would seem to be Austin Black's first films. Some of the notable titles on his videography include BIG GUNS 2 (Catalina Video, 1998); BLACK BALLED 2 (All Worlds Video, 1998); CHICAGO MEAT PACKERS (Bijou, 1993); DAS BUTT (Hollywood Sales, 1996); DEMOLITION MANN (All Worlds, 1997); HUSTLER BLUE (Hollywood Sales, 1996); LARGER THAN LIFE (HIS Video, 1989); REAL MEN OF THE NEW WEST (Altomar, 1988); and SAID & DONE (All Worlds, 1997). He had recently completed several bareback titles for SX Video and ZyloCo as well as KNOB SQUAD 2 for Zaye Entertainment. Our sincere condolences to his friends, family and fans.
Porn Star Birthdays for March 20 through March 26: Gianfranco, Buck Phillips, Sven, Cory Taylor (March 20); Bamm, Jay Bergman, Diego Correa, Tommy Hart, Alec Martinez, Austin Masters, Walter Soares (March 21); Eric Leneau, Caleb Stone (March 22); Rico Clayton, Tony Cole, Milos Janek, Reiko Mantos, Mike Marino, Ricardo Neston, Collin O'Neal, Karl Tenner, Alex Villaboas (March 23); Mark Anthony, JC, Jeff Dillon, Cory Koons, Mark Montana, Ricky Shore (March 24); Hunter Daniels, Anthony Ericson, Brock Hensley, Pavel, Mike Rivera, Marco Rochelle, Joe Sport, Jake Summers (March 25); Ben Damon, Gordon Lee, Rick Ritter, Troy Walker, John Zorg (March 26).

MIDWEEK INDUSTRY UPDATES
Here are the latest bits and bobs from GayPornLand:
* Gus Mattox, newly crowned GAYVN Performer of the Year, has announced his retirement. The news was picked up everywhere from Adult Video News to the Village Voice. Mr. Mattox tells "The Adams Report by J.C. Adams" that he has "reclaimed" Tom Judson, his birth name, and has been cast in the Broadway premiere of Terence McNally's upcoming play, Some Men. "I decided I'd exit stage left before I got the hook," he quipped. He says the producers of Some Men are aware of his XXX past. COLT Studio's Big Rig will be his final film. Look to next week's column for an interview with Mr. Mattox.
* Porn performers Caleb Carter and Trevor Matthews appeared this week on an episode of MTV's "Parental Control" dating show using their own names. The premise of the show allows the parents of a contestant, who detest their son or daughter's boyfriend/girlfriend, to pick two new candidates for their child to date. At the end of the show, the child must choose between his/her existing relationship or one of the two new choices. Mr. Carter tells "The Adams Report" that producers were aware of his and Matthews' porn career. The witty Carter, who wore a T-shirt reading "As Seen on DVD," steals the episode. He says, "I've been telling people to write to MTV and tell them I need my own show!"
* Performer Randy Summers says a public memorial service for the late Austin Black, who died earlier this month, will likely be held Monday, April 24th at 7 p.m. at the Metropolitan Community Church in West Hollywood. Stay tuned for details.
* The Cannes Film Festival (May 17-28) will feature the premiere of Shortbus from writer/director/star John Cameron Mitchell, of Hedwig and the Angry Inch fame. Shortbus features explicit sex scenes, and although hardcore sex is not unheard-of in the mainstream-indie scene, this film is unusual for two reasons: Some of the Shortbus sex is gay, and it is (gasp!) an American picture.
* Quickies: Michael Lucas is now being filmed for not one, but two independent documentaries... The Tom Ford Eyewear collection, for which Rascal Video Exclusive Luca DiCorso is featured in their advertising, quickly sold out of its initial order... TitanMen Exclusive and newcomer Cole Ryan was a virgin when he filmed Closed Set: Titan Stage One. A studio spokesperson tells us, "He contacted Titan and told us he wanted help losing his virginity!" Talk about coming out with a bang!

The Adams Report by J.C. Adams
March 13 - 19, 2006
The 8th Annual GAYVN Awards unspooled Thursday, March 9th at Rage nightclub in West Hollywood. To say it was a rowdy zoo would be an understatement. Did someone spike the punch? Hundreds of gay porn's hoi polloi were in attendance to witness a night of surprise upsets including the final award when DANGEROUS LIAISONS (Lucas Entertainment) and WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS 1-2 (Rascal Video) tied for Best Picture. The crowd (well-lubricated after two hours of boozing and schmoozing) gasped as one when presenter Dean Phoenix announced the stunning tie. Moments later, bedlam nearly broke loose when LIAISONS producer/director Michael Lucas took the stage and had ice thrown at him by an irate audience member. "Fuck you to everyone who didn't vote for me!" he declared from the podium to equal parts applause and boos.
"Well, thank you to everyone who voted for ME," exclaimed WRONG SIDE... producer/director Chi Chi LaRue. In a nod to their ongoing publicity war in the press, directrix LaRue thanked Mr. Lucas for being "the best press agent a girl could have all year long. He mentioned me [on his blog] more than he [mentioned] himself!"
Rascal Video Exclusive Johnny Hazzard was the belle of the ball with three major awards -- Best Solo Performance, Best Actor and Best Sex Scene (shared with Tyler Riggz) all for WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS. That flick was the overall kudos leader with seven wins. In a nod to the seesaw nature of the awards, DANGEROUS LIAISONS star Gus Mattox nabbed the prestigious Performer of the Year trophy.
But Bel Ami superstar Lukas Ridgeston was not to be outdone! The Euro-megastar picked up Best Actor--Foreign Release for LUKAS IN LOVE, his swan song to gay XXX, and the film additionally won Best-Renting Title of 2005 as well as Best Foreign Release, a well-deserved honor. A representative for the reclusive studio honchos was in attendance, but declined to make any remarks until hostess Chi Chi LaRue virtually dragged him in front of the microphone.
Among the hotly contested categories was one of the night's most sought-after awards: Best Newcomer. That hardware went to Falcon Exclusive Roman Heart, who beat out acclaimed newbies Benjamin Bradley, Tober Brandt, Jake Deckard, Alex Fuerte, Derrick Hanson, Huessein, Andy Kirra, Pete Ross, Francois Sagat, Jason Tiya and Chris Wide, as competitive a category as the GAYVN Awards has ever seen. In the weeks leading up to the awards, gay porn fans and insiders hotly debated which of the superstar Best Newcomer nominees might take the honor. I had the pleasure of interviewing young Mr. Heart (he turns 20 soon) the following morning and he was rightfully pleased, and still a bit stunned, by his win. All of the nominees were name performers, a rare occurrence.
Ms. LaRue once again had help handing out the trophies from six exclusive performers from various studios. For the first half of the show, her own Rascal Exclusive Benjamin Bradley joined Centurion Pictures Exclusive Erik Hunter and Hot House Exclusive Robert Van Damme. For the second half of the program it was Buckshots Man Dean Phoenix, COLT Man Jake Andrews (himself a Hall of Fame inductee) and Falcon Exclusive Derrick Vinyard.
GAYVN editor and show producer Doug Lawrence introduced Outstanding Achievement Award recipient TLA Video, while director/performer Gino Colbert assumed his now-traditional role of introducing the Hall of Fame inductees: legendary performers Jake Andrews, Michael Brandon and Randy Cochran (himself a pioneer for helping to smash gay porn's color barrier) and acclaimed cinematographer Brian Mills, who is based at Titan Media.
Mr. Colbert (a Hall of Famer himself) also introduced Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Rick Ford of All Worlds Video. The publicity-shy mogul was convinced to attend the show and receive his award in person, itself a remarkable achievement. His presence at the podium actually caused some of the carousing partiers who had abandoned the awards presentation to temporarily pause in their revelry and gawk at the famed producer. At the end of his speech Mr. Ford offered a "special thank you to Dirk Yates." I'm not sure how many people caught that in-joke.
Apart from the awards were the parties, parties, parties: Channel 1 Releasing and Sureflix.com co-hosted the official afterparty that was even more of a circus than it was last year (everyone from Tom Ford to Bruce Vilanch to Jane Wiedlin was in attendance), while Michael Lucas hosted his hush-hush birthday bash up on Mulholland Drive in the hills of Hollywood and Raging Stallion Studios threw another shindig celebrating the release of their new KNIGHT BY NIGHT flick at the Gauntlet II leather bar on Santa Monica Boulevard in WeHo.
We'll have lots more gossip and analysis next week. For now here are a few vignettes from the awards and the afterparties:
* There was some amused buzzing about the candy-red T-shirts Falcon Studios sent out as a promotion for their upcoming BIG DICK CLUB, starring megahung twink Ralph "Ten-Inch" Woods. The shirts depict a ruler measuring 10 to 14 inches and the slogan "I'm a member..." Although I think if you wear that shirt you're asking for trouble if you can't back it up.
* Best Threesome winner Spencer Quest (shared with Cobalt and Stretch for CIRQUE NOIR in which Mr. Quest is memorably double-penetrated) introduced me to insanely sexy Hot House Exclusive Alex Fuerte, who is the first man to inspire me to use the phrase "homina, homina, homina."
* "Clowns! Clown sex! And men with pussies! And Francois Sagat!" exclaimed Chi Chi LaRue in her introduction summarizing the year in gay porn. (The clowns and man-with-a-pussy are from Titan's CIRQUE NOIR, naturally.) To Mr. Sagat, Ms. LaRue declared, "I got my left-buttcheek tattooed in honor of you."
* StraightCollegeMen.com won Best Amateur Video for STRAIGHT COLLEGE MEN 23. They sent one of their cutie blondine stars up to accept the trophy. "Yes, we really are straight!" he declared and fled from the stage. Ms. LaRue quickly shot back: "Straight to bed with ME, whore!"
* One of the night's shocking upsets was in the Best Music category. Perennial nominee J.D. Slater of Raging Stallion won for his superb ARABESQUE scoring, but everyone and their grandma was expecting Boy George and Twin to take it for MANHATTAN HEAT (Lucas Ent.) At the afterparty I congratulated an exultant Mr. Slater. "Can you believe it?" he laughed. "I was gonna go all Kanye West on 'em if I lost again this year!"
* "Ggrrrrr!" That was the hilariously appropriate acceptance speech from one of the winning producers of MUSCLE BEAR MOTEL (Butch Bear) in the Best Specialty Release (Bears) category.
* On the way into Rage, I encountered newbie Damon Phoenix (himself a likely Best Newcomer nominee next year). He was understandably overwhelmed by the attention and noise and grabby guests. We kissed hello and he wandered off. Gossip columnist Billy Masters then materialized out of the crowd. "They're getting younger, aren't they?" I remarked to Mr. Masters, with whom I go way back. He agreed. "They were all in CitiBoyz videos when we started!" he cracked. That had us both in stitches.
* I met Kyle Lewis in the very fine flesh for the first time and complemented him on his terif work in STR8 OFF THE BASE 2 (All Worlds Video). We both have something of a sweet tooth for those "straight" Marines. Mr. Lewis said he loved how they'd do absolutely anything as long as it's barked at them by a man in a suit. (" 'Bend over!' 'Yes, sir!' 'Suck that dick!' 'Yes, sir!'")
* The nightclub was so packed (just a few years ago they had trouble filling the space) and the show itself became so rowdy that a table collapsed mid-show with a loud crash and Ms. LaRue, onstage, apparently didn't even notice. When Helix Studios won Best Specialty Release (18-23) for TWINK JUICE, the studio rep was stuck in the throngs on the second level of the nightclub and couldn't get down to the main floor in time. So she simply leaned over the railing and trophy stud Benjamin Bradley handed it up to her! By the time Tony DiMarco was announced as the winner for Best Screenplay for DANGEROUS LIAISONS (itself a surprise, albeit deserved, win as many expected either WET PALMS 7-9 or DIRTY LITTLE SINS or even BEYOND PERFECT to snag it) the crowd out in the bar area was so thick and drunk and loud that Mr. DiMarco couldn't be located. "You better be getting some good head in the toilet!" bellowed Ms. LaRue. (He never turned up.)
A few of the bold-faced names in attendance: Editrix Fay Dubois (herself a Best Non-Sex Performance nominee as an evil scientist in All Worlds' RAW 2); Chris Wide (so bashful! So cute!); dragstress Lana Luster (another Non-Sex perf nominee for AWV's THE PARAMEDICS); Michael Soldier, wry as ever; tattooed Colin West (sexy on film, wa-aa-ay hotter in person in a sleepy, just-rolled-out-of-bed way); Rafael Alencar, who prefers to top even though his awesomely plush ass stops traffic; newcomer Jeremy Hall who let me rub his abs for good luck; affable Mario Cruz; sultry Manuel Torres; boyfriends Jason Hawke and Jeremy Jordan, both a delight as always; wisecracking Chad Donovan and boyfriend Antonio Madiera.
Also: Jacob Slader in a wifebeater and working his imposing sexual mojo on Tim Rusty (another hottie on film who is even more sexy in person, although in a still-waters-run-deep way); Parker Williams, looking tanned and buffed and promising to direct another film soon following the scorching-hot LUBE JOB for Raging Stallion; Jason Crew, joyously celebrating his Best Oral Scene win for Mustang's BANG! BANG!; Tag Adams; Luca DiCorso; Simon Angel; Colton Ford (whose singing career is flourishing); Taurus; Dino Phillips and Kurt Young; directors Jerry Douglas, Joe Gage (the Best Non-Sex Performance winner for Mr. Douglas' BEYOND PERFECT); Coco Lachine; Thor Stephans; Phil St. John; and Drew Warner; 1 Distribution's Sam Dixon and Kevin Zernikow (formerly known as performer "Austin" and still very sexy).
When I met Spencer Quest and his boyfriend, I bowed down to "the great Spencer Quest," which made him laugh. He's very self-deprecating in person, which is kind of charming. His boyfriend joked, "That's what I say every time he calls me on the phone!" Michael Lucas was watching and cracked, "Why don't you ever bow down to me?!" So I did. He yelped, "Too late, bitch!"

BREAKING NEWS: Shocking Tie for GAYVN Best Picture
WEST HOLLYWOOD -- A shocking tie for Best Picture between WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS 1-2 (Rascal Video) and DANGEROUS LIAISONS (Lucas Entertainment) produced cheers, boos and even ice thrown from the audience that pelted an award-winning producer. The latest GAYVN Awards was a night of unexpected wins, no less than for Best Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of gay porn's hoi polloi were in attendance for the Eighth Annual "Adult Video News" GAYVN Awards at Rage nightclub in West Hollywood Thursday, March 9th. During an awards ceremony that produced stunning upsets in half a dozen categories, the biggest shockeroo of all came during the final award -- Best Picture of 2005 -- when megabudget, critically acclaimed pics from Rascal and Lucas tied for the top honor, gay porn's most prestigious kudo.
The crowd gasped as one when presenter Dean Phoenix announced the stunning tie; moments later, as DANGEROUS LIAISONS producer/director Michael Lucas took the stage, bedlam nearly broke loose when he was pelted with ice thrown by an irate audience member. The Adams Report by J.C. Adams
March 6 - 12, 2006
As we head into awards week here in GayPornLand, the latest edition of "The Adams Report by J.C. Adams" has Best Actor-GAYVN Awards analysis, tidbits on Tony Cage's dalliance (of sorts) with Tyra Banks; Sam Dixon's unique offer to the seven paratroopers facing courts-martial for wanking online; and news on the sad passing of performer Devon Barry.
GAYVN BEST ACTORS
Here's a quick look at the GAYVN nominees for Best Actor. It's next-to-impossible to figure out potential winners because the GAYVN judges are not as easy to read as Oscar or Emmy voters. There aren't exactly established voting patterns to follow. So this is mainly educated guessing from someone who has been around the block. GayvnAwards.com is the official website.
Rod Barry's performance as a vampire in THIRST for Adonis Pictures was well-received (AVN's review took note of his "signature snarl and nastiness") and he is beloved by fans and reviewers alike. That should never be discounted. ManNet.com describes THIRST as "a frisky and never-dull tale...that allows Rod Barry to chew both the scenery and a bunch of willing boys." A win here would not be a shockeroo.
Brad Benton in DIRTY LITTLE SINS (Red Devil Entertainment) was given ample opportunity to display both his awesome sexual prowess and gifted thesping abilities. The guy is a real actor and if his two consecutive Best Supporting Actor GAYVN wins didn't already convince you, this dialogue-heavy performance proves it. As the film's "tortured idealist" AVN notes Mr. Benton "[instills] the right amounts of fear, doubt, and hope in his character." The Adam Gay Video Directory calls Mr. Benton "genuinely gifted" and ManNet.com's review notes the plot is "touchingly acted" by Mr. Benton and costar Jacob Slader. He is the likely winner.
Pierre Fitch cemented his status as studpup du jour with THROUGH THE WOODS (Falcon Studios). He's immensely popular right now and this twist on Little Red Riding Hood is a love letter to his clean-scrubbed appeal. He's quite good but his scorching, GAYVN-nominated romp with daddy-wolf Gus Mattox is really what got people talking. Plus, competition is fierce.
WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS 1-2 from Rascal Video was specifically fashioned to showcase Johnny Hazzard's gifts. He effortlessly shoulders numerous sex scenes and an acting role that requires a range of emotion. Of the photogenic performer, AVN notes "sexually, [he] is a marvel" while ManNet.com noted that he "serves up melodrama, butthole and erections in equal measure." He could snag the prize, but did Brad Benton deliver the meatier acting performance?
The criminally underrated, multihyphenate Junito's WET DREAMZ OF GENIE (Liquid Dreamz) earned high marks from AVN (acting is "excellent" while sexually he is a "sizzler") and the Adam Gay Video Directory ("a natural actor and comedian"). But is he well known enough to provide real competition to the higher-profile hunks in this category?
Michael Lucas' nominated turn for DANGEROUS LIAISONS (Lucas Entertainment) comes into the competition with possibly the highest level of awareness. Is there anyone within 1000 miles of Mr. Lucas who doesn't know about this movie? Of the movie, the AGVD says "everything is first-rate" while AVN says his acting work is "another first-rate performance." But it's likely Mr. Lucas will be amply rewarded in other categories for this flick.
Gus Mattox (a former Broadway musical theatre actor) makes this a three-person race. The AGVD describes Mr. Mattox as "brilliant in his genially smarmy role" in LIAISONS while AVN notes he "moves to the forefront of gay porn actors with his breezy performance as a sexually irresistible photographer." Of the film's cast, ManNet.com declares "Gus Mattox is the clear winner when it comes to the non-sex work." It won't be a surprise if he snags this trophy. A win is inevitable.
Brad Patton made BEYOND PERFECT (Buckshots Productions) following the expiration of his exclusive contract with Falcon. And it was for no less than awards-magnet writer/director Jerry Douglas, fresh off the acclaimed BUCKLEROOS. He costars with rising stud Jason Kingsley as half of a power couple whose relationship is falling apart. AVN says "the final Jason/Brad duo is the kind of sex you'd want to have yourself," while ManNet.com notes "their chemistry throughout is palpable." Brad Patton has perhaps the best face, body and cock in porn today. Men and women alike drool over him, so don't discount the envy factor here.
Bryce Pierce is an unsung industry workhorse, reliably delivering one sweat-soaked performance after another. He is tailor-made for a Joe Gage movie like 110 IN TUCSON (Titan Media). As a radio disc jockey, Mr. Pierce has the film's signature role and anchors the final scene which ManNet.com calls "a classic Gage orgy," while AVN notes "timing, glances, tone of voice...everything is done perfectly." But Mr. Pierce faces the same problem as the other lesser-known actors in this category; are strong reviews enough to propel him to victory?
The final nominee is Colby Taylor, who marked a comeback (in front of the camera) with GETTING IT IN THE END (Jocks Studios). He plays a dual role as good/bad twins and appears in three sex scenes, notably humping gorgeous young buck Roman Heart atop a pool table, which AVN calls "a potent combo." ManNet.com describes Mr. Taylor's performance thusly: "As the evil twin, he's as cunning and as cold as a shark moving in for the kill. As the good twin, he's as cuddly and cute as your childhood teddy bear." Well-liked within the industry, Mr. Taylor would easily snare a win in a less brutally competitive year.
Should Win: Brad Benton for DIRTY LITTLE SINS.
Will Win: Mr. Benton or Gus Mattox. Johnny Hazzard could spoil.
RIP: DEVON BARRY
I have the distressing task of confirming the passing of another of our own. Performer Devon Barry died in August 2005. Mr. Barry passed following a brief illness, according to a published report, on August 5th, 2005 in West Palm Beach, Florida. He was just 28 years old. Cause of death was not released.
Named in part after fellow performer Rod Barry, whom he strongly resembled, Devon Barry was a favorite of All Worlds Video and appeared in roughly one dozen films between 2001 and 2004. He is survived by his parents, a brother and sister, girlfriend and young daughter. More details on the circumstances leading to his death are forthcoming. Our condolences to his family, friends and fans.
Mr. Barry's films include ANDEL IN AMERICA (2001, All Worlds Video; d. Chi Chi LaRue); BOY BAND (2002, Catalina Video; d. Josh Eliot); BRINGING OUT BROTHER (2002, All Worlds Video, d. Doug Jeffries; cover model); MILE BI CLUB (2001, All Worlds Video; d. Chi Chi LaRue); SUMMER LOVERS (2004, All Worlds Video; d. Andre Adair); and TELLING TAILS (2002, All Worlds Video; d. James C. Stark; cover model).
TONY AND TYRA
Sharp-eyed "Adams Report" readers spotted retired performer Tony Cage on a recent episode of the daytime yakker "Tyra." According to reports, Mr. Cage announced he had "given up the gay lifestyle" and gone straight. None of my spies mentioned if the show took note of Mr. Cage's porn career, but apparently his now-wife was described as a women who chases gay men. So...yeah, you gotta wonder what's going on there.
Tony Cage first achieved a modicum of celebrity via an episode of MTV's "Real Life" series in which young(ish) folks talked about their plastic surgery procedures; Mr. Cage had calf implants. Soon afterwards, Blue Blake snapped him up for what turned out to be just three flicks: THE BOUNCER (2003), THE MATRIXXX: A MUSCLE EXPLOSION (2004) and BRUTE (2004), for which he is gorgeously photographed on DVD cover, barechested and exuding butch sensuality. After his gay porn experience, Mr. Cage stripped around town for a couple of years and flirted with making a new blue movie, but it never happened. Now he's married and renouncing any same-sex urges on national television. Godspeed to him, but that probably means he'll be craving more cock right about...now.
SAM DIXON: PROUD AMERICAN
Following the news, as we recently reported, that the Army has "formally charged seven paratroopers from the famed 82nd Airborne Division with participating in sex acts for money," performer-turned-director-turned-distribution-maven Sam Dixon tendered a unique offer: His 1 Distribution and Tipo Sesso companies will hire any or all of the seven persecuted soldiers.
The announcement was made in a press release titled "Your Other Uncle Sam Wants YOU!" which is just too cute for words. But Mr. Dixon, who was a police officer pre-porn, is absolutely serious. "It is a travesty that in today's day and age," he says in the press notice, "when the United States is involved in the 'War on Terror' and our volunteer military is stretched so thin, that the Department of Defense would actually hunt down and prosecute these brave soldiers who have been defending our nation."
Understandably, Mr. Dixon "[sees] absolutely no harm" in their stripping and wanking and who-knows-what-else for money on what is believed to be Dink Flamingo's ActiveDuty.com. "Why should it matter if these poorly paid young men who put their [lives] on the line to protect our freedoms should try to make a few extra bucks by expressing themselves sexually on film?"
Inspired to take action by the news of the impending courts-martial against the paratroopers -- and remember these are highly trained professional soldiers, the real cream of the crop (no pun intended) among our troops whose pending expulsions are especially painful -- Mr. Dixon resolved to offer them employment. "The least I can do is give these guys the dignity and respect they deserve by helping them find work in front of or behind the camera for one of my companies or somewhere else. As is such the standard in society when your main family kicks you out for being gay, rest assured your gay family will welcome you in with open arms." Sam Dixon's companies are located online at either TipoSesso.com and/or 1distribution.net.

The Adams Report by J.C. Adams
February 27 - March 5, 2006
Things have quieted down a bit in advance of the GAYVN Awards on March 9th. Oh, sure, we've got the usual online bitchery and ego wars that result in numerous spammed "private" messages that have been blind-copied to everyone and their Aunt Petunia. And a group of seven unfortunate soldiers from the famed 82nd Airborne are facing courts martial for having sex on what is believed to be ActiveDuty.com. What a great use of our tax dollars given the recruitment shortfall faced by our all-volunteer army, eh? So this week, sit back, grab hold of your wiener and thrill to the hot details on the latest flicks from Alpha Male, AMG, Falcon, Lucas, Raging Stallion and South American Pictures. Oh, and I work myself into a frenzy comparing COLT's Chris Wide to vintage Ken Ryker...
NEW RELEASE DESK
Here's a quick peek at the latest XXX flicks that have come in over the transom: First up is ALPHA MALES ONLINE (Alpha Male Home Entertainment) from director Mike Esser and featuring another bevy of smooth-chested Australian studpups. Per the DVD the movie is "100 percent hardcore!" (good to know) and contains "fucking, sucking, rimming, threesomes, toys, paddles, double fucking." ArenaEntInc.com is their distribution website.
AMBUSHED (South American Pictures) from director Cristian Ferrero (who has been very busy lately) boasts a husky cutie on the cover with a trade-y vibe, wool knit cap and a chain around his neck, plus the requisite tats on his shoulder and a nipple rod. Naturally, he's not identified in the movie so I can't tell you his name. But he appears in the second scene with a partner who is a good foot taller, kisses and sucks dick and rims briefly, then fucks the taller guy seven ways to Sunday. ArenaEntInc.com is the distribution website.
Next is the follow-up to last year's AMG RESURRECTION: A NEW BEGINNING from Athletic Model Guild. This one again features Jason Adonis and is titled AMG RESURRECTION: THE POLYNESIAN AND THE SAILOR. The flick again draws on AMG's rich history and features remastered footage from the studio archives mixed with new stuff. Mr. Adonis is the titular "Polynesian" and is photo'ed on the cover wearing a crown and loin cloth made of leaves. The sailor in the title is that compact cutie Timmy Thomas, who still looks all of 18 years even though his first appearance was Falcon's THE OTHER SIDE OF ASPEN V back in 2001. AthleticModelGuild.com is the snazzy website.
Falcon Studios has BEEFCAKE on the menu from director Steven Scarborough with a drool-worthy DVD cover of newly buffed, returning Falcon Exclusive Tyler Hill. (Mr. Hill made four films in 1998 and 1999—DESERT HART, IN DEEP, STOCK: SENTENCED and STOCK: RELEASED). Should you doubt BEEFCAKE is h-o-t, consider how the ManNet.com review begins: "I can't recall...a flick in which every single man in it, given the opportunity, would seriously make me consider leaving my boyfriend." Those studs include Mr. Hill's fellow exclusives Roman Heart, Ethan Kage, Erik Rhodes and Derrick Vinyard with Tony Mecelli, Arpad Miklos, Robert Van Damme and Jed Willcox. Whew! Need I say more? Go to FalconStudios.com for specifics.
ENCOUNTERS: THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT is the first in a new erotic series from Lucas Entertainment following the end of their acclaimed FIRE ISLAND CRUISING line. This one made some news thanks to dragstress RuPaul's direction of the final vignette between Lucas Exclusives Bruce Beckham and Wilson Vasquez. (Tony DiMarco directed the other three scenes.) Mr. Vasquez shares the DVD cover with the strikingly photogenic Israeli pup Omer, who appears in the first scene with newcomer Erik Grant. Blu Kennedy and Danny Bitho anchor scene two, while a true clash of the titans is on tap for vignette three: Kent Larson and Parker Williams. I'm surprised the building didn't burn down during the filming of that sexual encounter... Go to LucasEntertainment.com for more on the movie.
COLT COUNTRY
COLT Studio's promotional package for MAN COUNTRY features real-life lovers and COLT Men Exclusives Luke Garrett and Gage Weston on the DVD, which arrived with a sample of COLT Slick lube and was nestled in a miniature wooden tray filled with hay. Cute! MAN COUNTRY was directed by John Rutherford and costars fellow exclusives Carlo Masi and Chris Wide alongside veteran horndog Jake Andrews, Jesse Balboa and Marco Conte.
A thought occurred to me as I was enjoying the shot of Chris Wide, on the back of MAN COUNTRY, photographed in a white muscle shirt and bulging out of his jock strap. He's smiling with one hand gripping the rim of his jock and the other bent over his head; just six-feet-plus of blond tanned beef. It suddenly occurred to me that this photo is very Ken Ryker-ish, or at least Mr. Ryker back in his heyday. If anyone was set to take over Ken Ryker's mantle, it's Chris Wide. They're both tall, both muscled, both hung, both have ears that jut out adorably from their heads, both exude that immensely appealing, still-waters-run-deep, naughtily innocent farmboy demeanor. What do you think? Go to COLTstudio.com and/or ChrisWide.com and see for yourself.
RAGING STALLION THREESOME
Raging Stallion Studios has three new flicks on tap: Another Pistol Media import with Aussie hotties; the studio's latest fisting adventure; and director Chris Ward's 100th feature. Check out RagingStallion.com for the scoop. CONSTRUCTION ZONE 3: WORKING CLASS ASS (fabulous title!) has Joshua Adams pictured on the DVD with his stiffie pointing skyward and a lubed-up, gaping butthole. That pretty much tells you all you need to know. Apart from Mr. Adams the flick costars Jessie Balboa (there he is again!), Steve Cannon (no stranger to fisting pics himself), Derrick Hanson, Sean Harris, Huessein, Chris Neal and Taurus. There's some really terrific videography and photography here.
The Pistol Media picture is ROOKIES: FILTHY AMATEUR JOCKS, another poetically expressive title. The dogpile of mostly mononamed cuties are Aiden, Alex, Benji, Heath Chapel (that "Heath" name was inevitable for Australian porn models, eh?), Hamish, Jesse, Kia, Liam, Tony, Clinton Williamson and Seth Williamson. Three- and fourways abound between, as the title suggests, relative newcomers shot on location "furtively in a Sydney locker room" (per the press release) with a sports theme, Pistol Media's typical milieu.
Director Ward's 100th title is MANIFESTO, a two-disc set featuring a lovely leather-clad Francois Sagat on the cover in cap and harness. Mr. Sagat joins the parade of RSS Exclusives that includes Justin Christopher, Remy Delaine (my ongoing crush), Huessein, Sarib and Michael Vincenzo with Jay Black, Michael Foxx, Fred Faurtin (who has to have a great sense of humor, or none at all, with a stage name so easily mispronounced), Derrick Hanson and Tamas Eszterhazy.
"MANIFESTO is an erotic statement like no other," boasts the press release. "This is pure porn, pure sex, pure hot, sweaty action, boiled down to the bare essentials to focus on nothing but the action." And they're not kidding: The movie includes a whopping nine scenes over four hours and two discs. The fifth scene on the second disc was shot by Mr. Ward "as the crowning highlight of his first 100 movies. This threeway starring Francois Sagat, Huessein and Jay Black is the triumph of a career and is required viewing for anyone who has ever enjoyed a Chris Ward movie!"
Porn Star Birthdays for February 27 through March 5: Carlos Aguirre, Anthony Ferrat, Matt Majors, Jackson Phillips, Austin Reeves, Rio, Nick Stevenson, Rob Walker, Chris Windsor, Tony Zerega (Feb. 27); Casper, Kyle Douglas, Dakota Phillips, Scott Samson, Emilio Santos, Christopher Stone, Matthias Vannelli (Feb. 28); Chris Cox, Remus Orza (Feb. 29: Leap Day); Bryan Abban, Unique Lee, Zack Davenport (March 1); Matthieu Costa, Mats Riem, Wes Rogers, Bryon Roberts (March 2); Gus, Mitchell James, Eric Michaels, Michael Vincenzo (March 3); Antonio Vargas (March 4); Sam Dixon, Luca Ferri, Karl Thomas, Jose Luis Vazquez (March 5).
