The Adams Report by J.C. Adams
November 28 - December 4, 2005
This week, it is my unfortunate duty to report the passing of another valued member of the adult community. Bobby Gallagher, known to many as "Bob Bouchard," suffered a fatal heart attack November 13th in New York. Mr. Gallagher's career in erotica stretched back several decades but most filmmakers on the gay and straight sides knew him as the operator of Mid Valley Studios, a soundstage in North Hollywood where literally hundreds of films were lensed over the years. News of his death was announced to the industry by his friend Ron Jeremy.
I worked with Mr. Gallagher as a production manager for MSR Videos, and encountered him dozens of times over the years as a journalist when I'd make a set visit for one shoot or another. But I only got to know him over the past couple of years when I directed CATCH ME and SEX WITH STRANGERS for All Worlds Video. The former film was shot at Mid Valley; the latter at another North Hollywood location he operated. STRANGERS was one of the final films Mr. Gallagher stage-managed before his retirement this past spring; he was responsible for the lighting design on the movie as well. On that set I had several conversations with him about his post-retirement plans. He was leaving his options open, he said, and ready for a new adventure after decades haunting dusty soundstages.
Mr. Gallagher was an invaluable help to a novice director like me, and when I was directing a small crowd scene for SEX WITH STRANGERS I wanted to get him on-camera since I knew it would likely be the last time we worked together. He initially declined, then changed his mind. I'm glad he did; that's him at the beginning of the film, in a crowded hallway, pretending to talk into a pay phone. When production wrapped, he gave me his email and told me to stay in touch. That was the last time we spoke. Despite designing dozens of sets for both sides of the industry, Mr. Gallagher was rarely even nominated for an award. I hope the "Adult Video News" trophy shows, either straight or gay, sees fit to properly honor him with some type of posthumous citation.
PALM DRIVE'S SUNSET RIDE
A few weeks ago I wrote about industry legend Jack Fritscher's decision to shutter his Palm Drive Video, take the company's website offline and close their mail order business. I spoke with him about it and will have more details in next week's column. But here's a snippet: "What made me decide to close down Palm Drive Video after twenty-three years was the twenty-three years of absolute glamour!" Laughs Mr. Fritscher, "My knee pads and my knees wore out. My friend, the genius artist David Hurles, who is Old Reliable Studio, once observed back in the 1970s that there are no old pornographers. If for one more day at Palm Drive I had knelt down between the ankles of some bodybuilder to shoot up his mortal frame to make his angle heroic, I would have made a liar of David."
Mr. Fritscher says the actual answer is that "as an art form the gay video feature is over." The internet, he feels, is filling the void with "a jpeg or with two minutes of streaming video. Just as the VCR killed the wonderful gay porno movie theaters, the web has killed the feature video. Viewers no longer require a video; they just want footage. This is not necessarily bad news. Change causes artists to grow. Especially as video directors adjust to the transformation of the internet into a medium where viewers view content, say, for free, but only after watching a video commercial. So it's time for a new generation to step in and reinvent erotic entertainment." Stay tuned for more of my conversation with Jack Fritscher next week.
AVN NOMS
The "Adult Video News" hetero AVN nominations were announced this past week. Several of our own managed to snag a spot among the thousands of nominations in roughly 735 categories. (You think I'm kidding about that? Go to AVNawards.com and see for yourself!) Directrix Chi Chi LaRue snagged a nod in theBest Director—Video Best Director, Film category for Vivid's SENTENCED. And Sharon Kane managed a Best Non-Sex Performance for DESPERATE WIVES 2 (Sex-Z Pictures). I caught up with Ms. Kane earlier this month at Ms. LaRue's birthday bash, and I'll be damned if she's aged a day in the ten years we've known each other.
And since the Transsexual Performer of the Year category always gets a lot of appreciative fan mail when I mention them, let me state that Gia Darling, Joanna Jet, Vicki Richter and Wendy Williams are this year's nominees. There are fifteen nominees in the Best Transsexual Release category, which I'll write up next week. What are "chicks with dicks" doing at the straight awards and not the gay show? Because straight guys snap that stuff up like it's going out of style. Gay audiences couldn't care less. That's why we find straight men so charming.
COUNTRY PORN, PLUS RUPAUL
I usually leave the blind item gossip stuff to other columnists, but there's a juicy story circulating in the wake of the Country Music Awards on November 15th. Rumor has it a certain hunky country singer whose star is on the rise made a gay porn flick early in his career. Supposedly the blue movie was released, but the singer's label has since allegedly paid the studio enough hush money to pull it from circulation. Further complicating matters is a certain wifey-poo the singer now has on his muscled arm. It's a good story, and lord knows there are a lot of closeted country singers, but what are the odds a gay porn movie could be hushed up in the digital age? At least not from one of the majors. But maybe one of those small amateur outlets? Hmmm…
Then there's RuPaul. The Amazonian dragstress is currently directing an indie film and has corralled Owen Hawk (whom RuPaul fairly worships), Gus Mattox and Michael Lucas for supporting roles. In exchange for Mr. Lucas' appearance he asked Ms. Ru to direct a scene for one of his skin flicks. Thus, last week, Lucas Entertainment Exclusives Bruce Beckham and Wilson Vasquez found themselves under the direction of RuPaul for a vignette in the forthcoming ENCOUNTERS. If you go to LucasBlog.com you can find out a few more details, like the homemade cookie dough Mr. Beckham (a fine cook) brought to the set, or the marvelous drawings Mr. Vasquez (a fine artist) showed off to cast and crew. But here's another tidbit you probably won't read anywhere else: A "New York Times" reporter was on-set for the whole thing. Wonder what they've got up their sleeve, eh?
DEPT. OF SELF-PROMOTION
A gigantor publicity push for my nonfiction book came this week when columnist Michael Musto plugged "It Just Happened!" in his "La Dolce Musto" column in New York's "Village Voice." Pretty cool, eh? And the book's not even finished! But that one mention stirred up pots of interest from non-porn muckety-mucks, so stay tuned for further developments.
Porn Star Birthdays for November 28 though December 4: Dakota Blaze, Sean Dickson, Cameron Fox (November 28); Cougar Cash, Mickey Danson, Trevor Hobbs, Alexander Marino, Kai Marsden (November 29); Chett Adams, Justin Case, Alexandru Cuza, Maddrocker, Jay Ross, Steve Shannon (November 30); Stephan Bertoli, Buster, Maxime Cannon, Julio Icente, Zach Rhodes (December 1); Peter Horne, Joe Montez, Brett Mycles, Rock, Denzel Rossovich (December 2); Milton Abdalla, Todd Gibbs, Trevor Halston, Chris Johnson, Erik Knight, L.A. Mont, Averil Morris (December 3); Alex Austin, Joey Carr, Mark Cirriano, Alexi Ferron, Daniel Palfy, Filippo Romano (December 4).

The Adams Report by J.C. Adams
November 21 - 27, 2005
Another busy week in GayPornLand as we update you on Blue Blake, Hot House sneaks a new movie, Adonis Pictures and Lucas Entertainment and MSR Videos go crazy with their press kits, we fill you in on that '80s teen idol who became a porn star, and more studios make more gay skin flicks available on the Video iPod and via podcasting. I'd welcome you to the future but it's already here.
BITS AND BOBS
Soon after director Blue Blake retired last spring, his popular website went offline. Folks have been relentlessly emailing ever since, wondering what happened. I never had anything to report. Well, all of you can head on over to BlueBlake.com right now for an update...
The biographical tidbits about Brad Patton in last week's column generated more mail than anything else I've written this year. Apparently many of you are quite turned on by the revelation that Mr. Patton was a professional ice skater for six years and toured with Disney on Ice. I spent time with the super-endowed stud in New York City at the 70th birthday bash for director Jerry Douglas. Mr. Patton has agreed to an interview, so look for that in the coming weeks. I have to coordinate things with COLT Studio, whose Buckshots line is releasing Mr. Patton's next film, BEYOND PERFECT. A release party is set for December 10th in the Big Apple at SBNY. BradPatton.net and COLTstudiostore.com will have more details eventually...
Hot House Entertainment send out a disc this week containing just one scene from their upcoming THE MISSING from director Steven Scarborough. It's a clever marketing hook to offer a taste of the movie to select reviewers. Expect a verdict next week. The flick stars Hot House Exclusive Kent North and a whopping nineteen (!) additional actors over six scenes (!) in a movie that runs over three hours (!). As an added bonus, "underground legend" DJ Little Rock provides a "dark and brooding score," per the press release. The official website is HotHouse.com...
IPOD, YOU-POD
"COLT Joins the iPod Video Stampede" ran a recent headline on GAYVN.com. The venerable studio recently began offering free trailers and according to their press notice frenzied fans crashed the service the very first night. Find out more at COLTmobile.com. "Forbes" magazine ran an article about porn studios taking advantage of the iPod Video and as usual completely ignored the gay side of the business. However, "iBods: Subway Commutes Get Steamier Thanks to Downloadable Gay Porn" was the headline in a recent "Time Out NY" magazine. That article plugged Lucas Entertainment's iPod Video content. Raging Stallion Studios has joined the podcast train (Treasure Island Media got the jump on that one, ahead of everyone else) and is also making snippets of their new HARD AS WOOD available via the...iPod Video. Go to RagingStallion.com for details. Can we spot a trend? Expect more, much more, in the coming year.
SAM RITTER: TEEN IDOL?
For some reason a number of emails have come in looking for information about the "rumor" that performer Sam Ritter used to be a mainstream actor. It's not a rumor, first of all. It's true. And secondly: Where are you people getting your gossip? This is old, old news.
Sam Ritter made about twenty porno flicks from 1994 to 1997 or so, most of them leather-themed. But two decades ago he was moderately famous as "Steven Geoffreys" via films like 1985's "Fright Night" and "Fraternity Vacation," as well as "At Close Range" (1986), "976-EVIL" (1988) and various television shows. He would be 41 years old now, and there's no word on his current whereabouts.
Here's a sampling of Mr. Ritter's videography: DIRTY LEATHER (Leather Entertainment, 1996; d. Jett Blakk); THE FLAVOR OF LEATHER (Oh Man! Studios, 1997; d. Bianco Piagi); LEATHER VIRGIN (Leather Ent., 1996; d. Blakk); and SMOKIN' GUNS (All Worlds Video, 1995; d. Jeff Kincaid).
PRESS RELEASE ROUNDUP
Lucas Entertainment has FIRE ISLAND CRUISING 7 on tap, the second-to-last chapter in the popular series. Exclusives Bruce Beckham, Chad Hunt and newcomer John Lamb topline. Costars include Brandon Aguilar, Derrick Hanson, Erik Grant, Kent Larson, Chad Leigh, Adrian R. and Parker Willams. Director Michael Lucas is ending the series after clashing with Fire Island Property Owner's Association, who were grouchy about his shooting adult films on the island. That would seem odd given the resort's famously hedonistic past, but there you have it. Go to LucasEntertainment.com and LucasBlog.com for details.
FIRE ISLAND CRUISING 7 is the return of Chad Hunt to sexing after a yearlong hiatus; appropriate, given Mr. Lucas discovered Mr. Hunt and cast him in the first FIC movie. He seriously fucks Kent Larson in Scene Four of the new and it should have people talking as it takes place in the infamous Fire Island Meat Rack. The movie's press kit was appropriately themed with "Island Punch"-flavored Jelly Belly jelly beans and a pack of "Island Squeeze" Bubblicious bubble gum. There was also a little paperweight trinket, a transparent container with blue water-like substance and two plastic fish floating around. Cute!
Apparently gay porn studios are determined to rot out my teeth, because Adonis Pictures also included candy in their press kit for THIRST, a vampire fuck flick starring the inimitable Rod Barry as the bloodsucker. Accompanying the movie, poster and press materials was a wad of cotton to simulate webbing that was studded with plastic spiders, and Gummy Body Parts — vampire teeth, a bloody ear and eyeballs made of sugar and food coloring. Very clever. They also included the 21-page script for THIRST, which might be a first for a gay porn press kit.
THIRST was co-written by producer Jeremy Spencer and director Michael Zen. The movie stars Exclusive Andy Kirra with Mr. Barry, alongside Nino Bacci, Josh Carter, Trevor Knight and Antonio Madiera. The studio website is AdonisPictures.com.
MSR Videos sent out a very clever press kit to promote PROWL 5: ROUGH AS IT GETS. They included a "Stud Evening Kit" — a metal lunchbox with a cartoon hunk ("Studly Steve") on the cover pictured in the shower and proclaiming, "On the prowl for anything that moves!" Indeed. The "evening kit" included a press release and DVD, natch, as well as MSR magnets and postcards, "Stud" brand soap and powdered body wash, a "black book" for the names and addresses of one's conquests, condoms, a Wet-Nap moist towelette (nice touch) and coupons for free downloads at MSR.tv.
PROWL 5: ROUGH AS IT GETS stars Arpad Miklos and Marco Paris alongside Trent Cougar, Mike Grant, Rhet Hengst, Nick Piston, Trey Rexx, Anthony Shaw and Bobby Williams. Check out MSRvideos.com for more scoop. (Standard disclosure: I've done press and production work for MSR in the past.)
The GAYVN Awards has a category for this sort of thing: Best Marketing Campaign (BUCKLEROOS won last year). All three should snag nominations, alongside Falcon's elaborate CROSS COUNTRY campaign and Raging Stallion's clever idea to promote TEAM PLAYERS: They sent out a softball signed by the whole cast nestled inside a box of peanuts.
To close out this week's column, a double-dose of Porn Star Birthdays to make up for last week's natal celebrations, which were squeezed out for space reasons.
Porn Star Birthdays from November 14 through November 20: Joe Austin, Josh Houston, Tico Martin, Gus Mattox, Bo Summers, Rick Valenz (November 14); David Bronson, Zach Hunter, Maurinho Manson, Bill Piatti (November 15); Tanner Hayes, Martin Hooker, Zsolt Kopazs, Steve Majors, Mario Perez, Gabriel Trepador, Steve Winston (November 16); Kyle Richards, Rob Stone, Ettore Tosi, Helmut Walker (November 17); Felix Bahia, Jason Bryant, Reynaldo Costa, Brad Rock, Santiago, Parker Wells (November 18); Anthony, Carson Cole, Bill Magnum, Matthew Michaels, Brandon Roo, Sandor Dablon (November 19); Paul Johnson, Casey O'Brian (November 20).
Porn Star Birthdays for November 21 through November 27: Johnny Hanson, Duke Johnson, Frank Miller, Chaz Omar, Viktor Perseo, Haven Philips, Joshua Rodgers (November 21); Sam Ritter (November 22); Luis Casas, Dean Johnson, Robert Harvey, Giorgio Salieri, Nicky Wells (November 23); Champ, Tyler Flannery, Skye Foster, Lucas Foz, Peter Pfalz, Ricky Price, Cody Scott, Marty Slater, Jared Wright, Gregor Yelson (November 24); Ian Babkave, Steve Rambo, Mack Rollins (November 25); Seth Atkins, Dobie Rivero, Jack Ryan, Sean Storm (November 26); Franco Corsini, Jason Kingsley, Robert Marx, Luke Maxwell, Matt Windsor (November 27).

The Adams Report by J.C. Adams
November 14 - 20, 2005
Greetings this week from New York City. The hardworking "Adams Report by J.C. Adams" staffers decamped to the Big Apple to attend a VIP bash for none other than director Jerry Douglas, simultaneously celebrating his 70th birthday and 26 years of matrimonial bliss with his significant other. The party was attended by a large pile of GayPornLand's best and brightest, as well as friends and loved ones from Mr. Douglas' life stretching wa-aa-ay back (ha-ha...). In fact, I spent an enjoyable hour chatting with the lovely woman who was Jerry Douglas' best friend in first grade! (Props to Helen!) But first a bit of business involving performers Ethan Marc and Kris Anthony, agent Dak King and JasonCurious.com host Jason Sechrest.
A couple of weeks ago, porn pup Kris Anthony posted a column on JasonCurious.com taking Ethan Marc to task for certain alleged improprieties. Longtime readers of "The Adams Report by J.C. Adams" have some background on Mr. Marc, a sexually voracious young stud with a natural gift for on-screen performance. He also has a checkered history with the law (kiting checks, mostly) and this is something he would own up to himself. Mr. Marc disappeared for awhile several years ago and this is due to the fact that he was serving time at the behest of the New York State judiciary. Get my drift? When he was free of his enforced vacation, he immediately set about rebuilding bridges. In fact, I spent an hour on the phone with him myself last year and Mr. Marc was frank and apologetic about his past misdeeds and seemed sincere about wanting to work again in the industry. He asked if I would serve as a temporary emissary and set up a couple of meetings for him with some industry bigwigs. I agreed and Mr. Marc began working again.
This past summer he was invited to room with fellow porn pup Kris Anthony. And this is when things went sour. I should note that until Mr. Marc is apprehended and brought up on charges, all allegations should be considered as such. Are we clear? And I don't think I was taken in by Mr. Marc last year. I've been around the block and can smell a con artist. I believe he was sincere in his intentions to turn himself around. At least, he was sincere then.
Here we go: In Kris Anthony's column he rips Ethan Marc right and left, in an "emotionally driven email," as Mr. Sechrest calls it, and reveals himself as the apparent victim of a scam by Ethan Marc via stolen checks that belonged to Mr. Anthony. Mr. Marc's whereabouts are currently unknown. Go to JasonCurious.com and read Kris Anthony's column for yourself; we only have so much room here and lots more to discuss.
In the column, however, his version of the alleged scam has been challenged by Dak King, the agent for both Mr. Anthony and Mr. Marc. Mr. King's essential complaint has to do with Kris Anthony's allegation that the agent had attempted to hide Ethan Marc's misdeeds from the industry upon his return. (For the record, Mr. King also sent a similar version of this rebuttal to JasonCurious.com.)
"Around March 2004 Ethan Marc contacted me to tell me he wanted to get back in the business and asked if I would help him," Mr. King explains. "I told him he that if he would be upfront about his past, I would put him out there to the industry. I know that he called and met with several directors and producers from his past and made amends. I pointed out to anyone in the industry who was considering hiring him that he had a checkered past and it was up to them if they wanted to give him a second chance. Falcon Studios wanted him for TAKING FLIGHT and Jet Set wanted him for their WET PALMS series. Both were fully aware of his background and willing to forgive it or put it in the past. Ethan appeared to be on the straight and narrow and eager to reclaim his career."
Some time passed. Mr. King then explains that Mr. Marc "called to tell me he was in jail for some trouble he got into in Los Angeles. His attorney told me he had apparently written some bad checks in excess of $400. At the time of his incarceration I took a wait-and-see attitude and both Kris Anthony and I decided it was not appropriate to make any public statement about Ethan's plight." He goes on to say that Mr. Marc was released from a six-month jail stint in Los Angeles in June 2005, just as Jet Set was preparing the latest series of WET PALMS episodes. "I told Jet Set that he had again gotten himself in trouble. They chose to use him to complete the WET PALMS season, said he did a great job and displayed model behavior. Ethan Marc told me he had learned his lesson and would never get in any trouble again. When Kris Anthony told me Ethan was moving in with him, I cautioned him [against it]. After the WET PALMS wrap party Kris told me Ethan had taken his checkbook and written bad checks. I told him it might be in his best interest to report him to the authorities so he couldn't be accused of collusion [and] dropped Ethan from my model roster." Dak King tells JasonCurious.com that he has had "no contact with Ethan Marc since he finished WET PALMS in June 2005 so I can only wish him the best wherever he is."
He told me he felt "compelled to respond to the [JasonCurious.com] web tabloid piece, not to add to the gossip but to correct misleading accuracies." He notes that Kris Anthony claims Mr. Marc will "never work in this town again." Mr. King refutes that claim. "Folks, never say never. Don't be surprised if, in the future, Ethan Marc does surface once again and a forgiving studio wishing to capitalize on his bad-boy image gives him another shot."
HAPPY B-DAY, JERRY DOUGLAS
Let's move on, shall we? Even though I am inches away from wrapping the "Adam Gay Video Directory" this was a party I could not miss. I was invited to bunk at the lavishly appointed two-floor Chelsea apartment of director/performer Michael Lucas. Dang, Cletus! That's the life. Mr. Lucas, however, is currently filming in Barcelona, so I have the run of the place.
Jerry Douglas' "smut career" (as he is fond of terming his achievements) stretches back to the early 70s of course, starting with THE BACK ROW starring the legendary Casey Donovan. He is now awaiting the release of BEYOND PERFECT for COLT/Buckshots, which should be available via COLTstudiostore.com rather soon.
I met up with COLT's John Rutherford and Tom Settle, directrix Chi Chi LaRue, and newbie porn hunk Jake Deckard (now a TitanMan Exclusive) and we headed out to the bash. Mr. Douglas lives in a lovely old building and his apartment is comfy and lined with books, music and many, many, many movies (I got a personal tour from Mr. Douglas of his infamous "smut room" which contains gay porn memorabilia spanning three decades. You can almost hear the echo of a million cumshots from porn stars long gone among those loaded shelves.)
Helen, Mr. Douglas' first-grade pal, tells me she and he were each other's first kiss. "We found that it wasn't too exciting for either of us," she recalled dryly. It took place when they were about eleven, on his mother's front porch. "I would say about a year later Jerry discovered just how much more exciting it could be." I believe her!
As we arrived, the apartment was thronged. I quickly spotted performers Andrew Addams, Owen Hawk and the back-from-retirement Steve O'Donnell. He's as trim and angular as ever. "I'm having new pictures taken this week," he told me. "If they turn out okay, I'll send them out to the studios. If not, I'll wait!" He promised me a sneak peek at the photos. But expect a return from Mr. O'Donnell and his wickedly long magic stick in 2006. Some time later, I was looking for the blond hunk to ask a follow-up question and found him necking with porn pup Pete Ross. Good to see he hasn't missed a trick. They came up for air after a moment, then young master Ross turned to me, licked his lips, and exclaimed "Yum!" I believe him!
Pete Ross was there with his best friend, Blu Kennedy. Mr. Ross has changed his look once again; gone are the short, strawberry locks. Now he's a shaggy blond and it's very fetching. About an hour later, BEYOND PERFECT costar Brad Patton turned up in skintight, low-riding black jeans and a stylishly shredded black T-shirt. He made it work. As we talked I had to concentrate to keep my attention from wandering to the flashes of bronzed skin peeking out underneath the tears of his shirt. Sigh.
A few items about Brad Patton: He's currently doing several live shows a week on BradPatton.net. He lives in Amsterdam, but he's actually from Australia. He was a professional ice skater for six years and toured with Disney on Ice. He was offered a modeling gig that enticed him to leave the ice show, but the job fell apart when he wouldn't hump the guy who offered him the job. He'd always fantasized about doing porn, and took a shot when the modeling went south. And a star was born. Oh, and I was relieved to learn he thinks his nickname - "The Rhinoceros" - is funny (and that it was coined around here at some point.)
Director Joe Gage was there as well, sporting a full beard and talking excitedly about GALE FORCE: MEN'S ROOM II as well as his upcoming ALABAMA TAKEDOWN (both for Titan Media). Spencer Quest and Cliff Rhodes star in the latter as brothers who open up a wrestling school to score some cash and some ass. It is part of a planned trilogy, he says, "but only if the fans rise up as one and demand a sequel! Tell your readers to write to Titan after they see the movie and ask for more." We both marveled over Mr. Rhodes' astonishing endowment, which has to be seven or eight feet long and thick as a tree trunk. And Mr. Quest, he says, is "pure movie star from head to toe." I concur!
Another Joe Gage anecdote: He has a significant nonsex role in BEYOND PERFECT. Recently Mr. Gage had lunch with his good friend, Armistead "Tales of the City" Maupin and lamented the potential critical response to his thespian abilities. "Don't worry about it," Mr. Maupin assured him. "No one will notice you because their hand will be on the fast-forward button as soon as they see you!"
Other partygoers: Reviewer Mickey Skee with producer John Rex; director Kevin Clarke; NYC agent Sam Hazzard; actor Preston Richie (who has appeared in most Jerry Douglas epics and won awards for his acting in them); and writer Jeffrey Escoffier, with whom I compared notes about the nonfiction porn books we both happen to be writing at the same time, and who told me that he co-wrote the script for Rod Barry's directorial debut, DOWN THE DRAIN for All Worlds Video. He has also co-written Rod Barry's memoirs, which are currently out to publishers as we speak.
I am way, way over my word count for this week's column, so I'll close out with a snippet of a speech Mr. Douglas gave to those assembled. He thanked everyone for their presence, and said, "If a man's riches are measured by his friends, I'm a very wealthy man." Now that, Constant Readers, was a party.

The Adams Report by J.C. Adams
November 7 - 13, 2005
It was a roller-coaster week in GayPornLand. First came the distressing news that we lost another of our esteemed members, Falcon president Terry Mahaffey, to cancer. The next day, industry legend Jack Fritscher announced that his 23-year-old Palm Drive Video has closed down. And then performer/director Sean Storm sent word that although he survived Hurricane Wilma, his Ft. Lauderdale apartment complex was partially destroyed (the roof was torn off!). On a much brighter note, the party in West Hollywood to celebrate the release of the porn-themed "Warning!" photo book was packed to the rafters. I think we all needed to blow off some steam.
RIP: TERRY MAHAFFEY
Falcon Studios announced this past week that its principal officer and president, Terry Mahaffey, died on Sunday, October 30 from "complications resulting from cancer treatment," per the official press statement. Mr. Mahaffey died at home with his partner, Michael Scott, by his side. A memorial service in San Francisco will be held November 12th.
In 2004, Terry Mahaffey formed 3 Media Corporation - together with business partners Steve Johnson and Todd Montgomery - and purchased Falcon Studios from the Charles M. Holmes Foundation. "Chuck" Holmes founded the powerhouse studio and was a mentor to Terry Mahaffey, who was brought to Falcon in 1996 by Mr. Holmes. "Throughout his tenure with the company," read the press release, Mr. Mahaffey "provided the creative vision, attention to detail, and commitment to quality that enabled Falcon Studios to maintain its leadership in the industry."
Terry "has been the heart and soul of the company," said Todd Montgomery. "The entire staff of Falcon Studios mourns his loss." Memorials may be made in Terry Mahaffey's name to the Sutter VNA & Hospice Foundation, 1900 Powell St., Suite 300, Emeryville, CA, (510)450-8724. Donation forms can be downloaded at VNAhospicefoundation.org.
My condolences to Terry Mahaffey's partner and the Falcon staffers. When I was in San Francisco this past summer researching my nonfiction book, I spent a very pleasant and enlightening hour with Mr. Mahaffey in his bright, airy office at Falcon headquarters. All of the awards the studio has won over the years were displayed on tables and shelves. He shared a great deal about his career in the adult industry, and talked about Chuck Holmes and the early years of the studio. Stuff that no one knows anymore or doesn't want to talk about. He will be missed.
PALM DRIVE CLOSES
Also this week, industry legend Jack Fritscher announced the closure of his venerable Palm Drive Video. In an "Adams Report by J.C. Adams" exclusive, Mr. Fritscher revealed that on October 24, the company was shuttered, its website taken down, and its post office Box and 800 number discontinued. Stay tuned for details on why he decided to close up shop.
Palm Drive Video was founded in 1982 as the first video company based in San Francisco. Jack Fritscher was first the founding editor of "Drummer" magazine, which he ran from 1977 to 1979. Mr. Fritscher went on to become the publication's most frequent contributor throughout its 200-issue run. In its 23-year history, Palm Drive produced several hundred "homomasculine leather videos," and is credited with inventing the "bear" genre of erotic film.
Palm Drive Video also produced feature documentaries on subjects such as the Folsom Street Fair (dating as far back as 1984), and underground erotic artists such as The Hun, Rex, Skipper and Domino. Two Palm Drive documentaries on New Orleans photographer George Dureau are in the permanent collection of the Maison de la Europenne de La Photographie in Paris.
Jack Fritscher is currently completing work on "Eyewitness Drummer: A Memoir of the Gay History, Leather Heritage, Pop Culture, and Literary Roots of the Best of Drummer Magazine," scheduled for publication in 2007. His two most recent books are the nonfiction "Popular Witchcraft: Straight from the Witch's Mouth" (reissued in April 2005 by the University of Wisconsin Press) and the Haworth Press edition of "Some Dance to Remember: A Memoir-Novel of San Francisco 1970-1982" (October 2005).
SEAN STORM & HURRICANES
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about performer Sean Storm having to evacuate in advance of the latest worst-hurricane-ever. He checked back in a few days ago with an update: "The storm, as I am sure you and the rest of the country saw, was far worse than anyone had anticipated it would be. Hurricane Wilma was a Category 2 when she hit. Where I am staying has been without power for a week.
"I am two hours north of Ft. Lauderdale at the moment. Yesterday I went back to check out my apartment. It was not a pretty sight. The roof had been blown off, and several units were in bad shape. My unit didn't suffer any damage, but there is a chance that my apartment complex may be condemned before this is all over.
Mr. Storm also says his apartment building has been utilized in the films DIRECT DEPOSIT and HOLE MILK, both from his Cr8tive Juices Studios, and "is also featured in footage shot last year for the forthcoming STORM SURGE. Ironically, I scripted in STORM SURGE that fictional 'Hurricane Oliver' would hit Ft. Lauderdale and that half of my apartment complex would get destroyed, except for my unit. I scripted this because I had been planning on moving anyway, and where I move, so will my furniture. So I used a fake hurricane to destroy my [apartment] as a plot device. Last week, fiction became reality."
Other South Florida studios emerged relatively unscathed. All Boys Video and D&E Productions shut down for a few days, and Mr. Storm says Centaur Films' Chip Daniels is fine and "anxious to get back to work just like I am." No word, however, from Kristen Bjorn's Sarava Productions.
WARNING: BOOK PARTY
Thursday, November 3rd was the date for the book release party for "Chi Chi LaRue's Warning." with photographs by Greg Thompson. The party also doubled as a birthday shindig for directrix Chi Chi LaRue. Location was Ice Bar at The Abbey in West Hollywood. Ms. LaRue was the DJ. I arrived some time after 7pm and there was a decent crowd, not too packed. But soon after Ms. LaRue began spinning the energy of the place jacked up. It was almost palpable. As soon as she played a mash-up of Nine Inch Nails and 50 Cent, the energy changed. Suddenly the bar was jammed wall-to-wall. Drinks, noise, naked skin, you name it.
Quite a crowd, too. A camera crew from QTV was there with a cute blondine host in a hand-painted jacket. Bobby Trendy swished and swayed, gossip columnist Billy Masters felt me up from behind and gave me quite a start (not that I didn't enjoy it) and The Lady Bunny swooned dramatically for any camera pointed in her direction. Dan Renzi from MTV's "The Real World: Miami" and other shows was there looking kind of hot in jeans and a T-shirt. I found out later he'd just walked in off the street!
Porn models spotted: Rascal Video hotties Simon Angel, Johnny Hazzard (the belle of the ball), Luca DiCorso, Brandon Lee and Eddie Stone. Kyle Kennedy was there, too, quietly hanging out with his friends. Nice to see that guy again after some time away. Also: Andrew Addams, Jason Hawke and Jeremy Jordan, Michael Knight, porn pup Casper Sloan with dark locks dyed platinum blond (we all do it once, don't we?) that made him the spitting image of Joshua Berlin, and another bottle blond, Bret Wolfe, newly resettled in Los Angeles from Chicago.
Other industryites: Channel 1 Releasing's Rob Novinger and Steven Walker, graphic designer Jefferson, editor Scott "Koo Koo Boy" Coblio, director Doug Jeffries and publicist Rob Reimer, who jokingly told a security person when I entered, "This guy is trouble." Don't fuck with the gossip columnist, boys!
I chatted up Adonis Pictures producer Jeremy Spencer, "The Fluffer" producer John Rex, Joey DiBartolo of JoeyandCarlo.com fame (remember them?), "Adult Video News" staffers Doug Lawrence and Jeff Rosenberg, photographer Greg "Mocha" Lenzman, and the one and only Sharon Kane, who is now a neighbor of sorts, having recently relocated to West Hollywood.
Earlier that evening, Jason Sechrest of JasonCurious.com hosted The Fisher Twins of Miami Studios fame at "Cocktails with the Stars" at Micky's, around the corner from The Abbey. Adorable, those boys - excuse me, "young men of voting age." Yes, they're actually twins. Yes, they're identical. No, they don't touch each other in their movies. But a Fisher Twin double-team ain't a bad spot to find yourself.
Mr. Sechrest tells me he's set to make another mainstream stage acting gig. He'll appear in "The Eight: Reindeer Monologues" at The Chance Theatre in Anaheim, California November 19th through December 18th. In a press release he passed along to me, Mr. Sechrest says he'll play "Cupid, the big gay reindeer" among the original eight who have their own take on a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against St. Nick. Go to JasonSechrest.com for ticket information. On with the show.
