As Los Angeles and the entirety of the West Coast crumples beneath a vicious heat wave, the "Adams Report" staff has decamped for a much-needed vacation. We unzipped our bulging mailbag last week to answer some of your burning questions about GayPornLand, and of course there wasn't enough for just one column. This week, we cover the burgeoning mainstream career of Falcon Lifetime Exclusive Matthew Rush, spill the beans on COLT’s new flick from director Jerry Douglas, and update you on the 2257 regulation changes, plus a few extra hot tidbits.
Q: "What's the name of the movie, not a porno, that Matthew Rush appears in?"
JCA: The ever-stunning Matthew Rush has a cameo in "Third Man Out" from director Ron Oliver and screenwriter Mark Saltzman. "Third Man Out" is the first adaptation of the murder mystery series written by Richard Stevenson featuring gay private investigator Donald Strachey (played by cutie Chad Allen in the film). It is the first in a series of Strachey films on the here! gay TV network.
Mr. Rush has nabbed another cameo in the indie flick "Not Another Gay Movie" from director Todd Stephens and writer Tim Kaltenecker. I don't have release information on that one. On the porn side, Mr. Rush's stunning, bronzed asscheeks are legendarily displayed on the cover of BOOTSTRAP from Falcon/Paladin. That DVD cover has already entered the realm of myth. He also appears in HEAVEN TO HELL.
The busy Mr. Rush is keeping busy this summer making personal appearances. He performed together with muscle hunk Zeb Atlas on July 23rd in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the Blue Ball, then flew across the country for an appearance July 24th at Splash Bar in New York. JCA: None of them.
Q: "What happened with the 2257 regulation changes you wrote about?"
JCA: The Free Speech Coalition (FSC) struck a deal with the Department of Justice which took effect June 23rd and applies only to members of the FSC. In effect, FSC members are protected from prosecution until a federal district court rules on the FSC's application for a preliminary injunction against the Justice Department's proposed changes to the recordkeeping code. The deal protects FSC members for thirty days after the hearing, currently set for August 8th and 9th, or until a judge's ruling, whichever happens first.
Late this week, however, the FSC received notice of "significant concessions" from the Department of Justice "pertaining to retroactivity, 'date of production' and shooting overseas," as they described it in a press release. However, the organization warns members not to jump to any conclusions. Stay tuned.
Q: "You mentioned a couple weeks ago that COLT Studio was doing another movie with Jerry Douglas. Any details? I thought BUCKLEROOS was great."
JCA: You have perfect timing. The COLT Studio Group sent out a press release just this very week detailing BEYOND PERFECT, Mr. Douglas' next gig as a writer/director. The Hall of Famer rang me up a few days earlier to give me the scoop. "First of all, I've never filmed in San Francisco, if you can believe that," Mr. Douglas (a native New Yorker) told me. "So I'm a stranger in a strange land here. I'm looking at the city with fresh eyes." BEYOND PERFECT has a cast of fresh meat, mostly ("I've never worked with so many newcomers"). The two leads are Jason Kingsley, a former Kristen Bjorn model, and Brad Patton in his first movie following the end of his Falcon exclusivity contract. None other than living legend Joe Gage will play a nonsex role, "and it's a significant part," says Mr. Douglas.
BEYOND PERFECT details the unraveling of a relationship between Messrs. Kingsley and Patton; Mr. Gage plays their therapist. As the men relive their courtship and the early days of their relationship, it turns out each stud remembers key moments differently. "So each scene plays twice. It's 'Rashomon,'" Mr. Douglas explained. "It's an interesting gimmick for a porn movie, and a tricky one. But I think I've cracked it. Remember, Brad and Jason each remember things differently, so there's a lot I can do with that to keep it interesting."
Mr. Douglas also expressed delight over an apartment overlooking the city COLT's crew found to shoot much of the film. "Needless to say, it's beyond perfect," he laughed. "Heart-stopping views for days." At the time of our conversation, Mr. Gage and Mr. Patton had already arrived in the city to rehearse (shooting was set to begin July 23rd). "Jason is flying in from South Africa, Brad flew in from Amsterdam, where he lives now, and Joe Gage from New York City. It's a far-flung cast." Best news of all? "Brad and Jason can't wait to get their hands on each other. Filming them together is going to be one hell of an afternoon."

This week we've got updates on retired directors and performers, straight male hotties going gay (sorta...), porn star blogs, and more. So, dive on it and don't forget to breathe through your nose.
Q: "I read an ex-porn star died this week but I didn't save the article. Do you know who it was?"
A: I'm sorry to confirm that Tim Barnett, whose real name was Bradford Wagner, recently committed suicide. He had been incarcerated since June 2004 in the Boulder County Jail in Colorado awaiting trial for rape and other charges. We first reported on this story one year ago. News of Mr. Barnett's death was circulated by the Associated Press newswire. The evidence gathered against Mr. Barnett was apparently compelling; he was the prime suspect in at least seven alleged rapes. He left a suicide note, but authorities did not release its contents.
In his early '90s heyday, Tim Barnett, who was 37 years old, appeared in roughly 20 films. His better pics include ABDUCTION 2: THE CONFLICT (Falcon Studios/Paladin, 1993; d. Steven Scarborough) and ABDUCTION 3: REDEMPTION (Falcon, 1995; d. Scarborough); BILLY'S TALE: A MODERN DAY FABLE (Falcon, 1994; d. Scarborough); and WANTED (Catalina Video, 1994; d. Chet Thomas).
Q: "Blue Blake was my favorite porn star and my favorite director. Is it really true he's retired?"
A: Yes. In fact, the garrulous Mr. Blake celebrated his 42nd birthday with a lavish bash on Saturday, July 16th. It was thrown for him by his husband, Harold Huttas. During the party, once we'd both been properly liquored up, I asked Mr. Blake point blank if he was secretly planning something along the lines of a "coming-out-of-retirement" movie. His unequivocal reply? "Absolutely not." So there you have it, straight from the horse's mouth. Although I should also mention at the time I asked Mr. Blake that question, he had somehow lost his shirt and was wearing a jaunty sailor's cap.
Among the hundred or so guests at the gorgeous Hancock Park home Mr. Blake shares with Mr. Huttas were a handful of porno folks (and a few celebs): director Drew Warner with his b.f. Troy Punk; videographer/director Andre Adair; Arena Entertainment's Tom Esparza; Cal Vista Video president Sidney Niekirk (one of porn's power brokers); and the bodaciously gorgeous Robert Van Damme, with a stunning blonde in tow.
Q: "I read in one of your columns that Chi Chi LaRue will make another STR8 SHOTS movie. Will the fucking hot Kurt Lockwood be in it again?"
A: Unfortunately, no, insanely sexy Kurt Lockwood will not be appearing in the sequel to STR8 SHOTS (Rascal Video/Channel 1 Releasing), which goes into production this week. I visited the Channel 1 offices recently and Ms. LaRue gave me a sneak peek of her upcoming Eddie Stone epic, MASTER OF THE HOUSE, which was shot on location in Majorca, Spain. Afterwards she told me about the STR8 SHOTS sequel and before I even opened my mouth she said, "Julian isn't doing it again." Damn! The girl knows me too well... So no megahung Julian and no Kurt Lockwood, but there will be another collection of stunning hetero porn stars wanking it for the gay market. Look for it later this year.
Q: "What's the title of the Joey Stefano biography?"
A: That would be "Wonderbread and Ecstasy: The Life and Death of Joey Stefano" by Charles Isherwood (Alyson Publications, 1996). It's a bit thin on personal information about Mr. Stefano, but otherwise the book is a good overview of his meteoric rise and tragic crash.
Q: "I loved THE HOLE [Jet Set/Marina Pacific)] by Wash West. Is he making any more porn movies?"
A: At the present time, Mr. West has no plans to direct another skin flick. But he is currently directing another indie film in Los Angeles, which would be his follow-up to THE FLUFFER. Stay tuned.
Q: "Whatever happened to Eric Hanson? God, was he beautiful."
A: Although retired for three years, I suppose the stunningly gorgeous Mr. Hanson could stage a comeback at some point. His final flick was for All Worlds Video and writer/director Wash West: SEVEN DEADLY SINS: GLUTTONY (2002). At the time, he filmed a scene for the final film in that series, titled REDEMPTION. For various reasons, REDEMPTION was delayed and finally got a release this year. Check it out if you're a fan. Even with his superb Falcon flicks, I don't think Mr. Hanson was better utilized in any other film than GLUTTONY. Last I heard, he was living in Miami and working as a personal trainer.
Q: "Are there any porn star blogs?"
A: Yes, indeedy. Director-performer Michael Lucas has an often hilarious and very opinionated blog at Lucasblog.com; one of his very first entries on anal douching stirred up a lot of internet interest and it's been all up- or downhill from there, depending on one's perspective. Moving on, performer Sean Storm's periodically updated journal can be found at Seanstorm.blogspot.com.

It is news by the numbers as we clear the "Adams Report" desk of press releases and whatnot. Among this week's pearls of delight: a gay porn celeb makes his bid for reality TV stardom, mainstream film goes hardcore (yawn), All Worlds puts an X-rated twist on a television hit, Bel Ami supersizes, and we review/preview upcoming flicks and casting notices.
1.) The talented and charismatic Brad Benton is the latest gay porn personality to make the jump to reality television. He appeared on "Open Call" on the TV Guide Channel, specifically the "Next Donald Trump" episode, which reruns incessantly so you have plenty of opportunities to catch him in action. The show's host liked Mr. Benton, and he is prominently featured, but he was unfortunately eliminated because "TV Guide is never gonna go for a porn star." And yet a straight porn producer was picked as one of the final three contestants (he lost). Go figure. Porn publicist Jason Sechrest also appeared on "Open Call," in the "Next Paris and Nicole" episode. Watch for them both. (And can you guess which current summer TV reality hit came within inches of casting Mr. Benton in their fishbowl? He even met with network execs before they passed on him. Their loss.)
2.) The All Worlds Video promotion package for DESPERATE HUSBANDS (d. Coco Lachine) came with a big, red apple. A piece of red twine was affixed to the stem with a note that read, "I know who you did, and I'm going to tell!" If you watched "Desperate Housewives" you understand the note (and the apple, for that matter). The DESPERATE HUSBANDS title font is done up in the same style as "Desperate Housewives" (kudos to AWV's crack graphic designer Todd Alan), with Stetson Gable, Kent Larson, Kyle Lewis and AWV Exclusive Chad Savage posing nude on the cover. 3.) I've periodically written in this space about mainstream films that include explicit sex, the indie "9 Songs" being one of them. Because it premiered at Cannes and was directed by Michael Winterbottom, and the two stars (Margo Stilley and Kieran O'Brien) are not adult film performers, "9 Songs" is not considered porn. Whatever. As Roger Ebert says, "Sex is an activity. Pornography is an attitude toward that activity." Anyway, the "New York Times Magazine" recently published yet another giggly article about hardcore sex in mainstream film, citing "Brown Bunny" and the Catherine Breillat oeuvre ("Romance," "Anatome de l'enfer"). Plus, "Shortbus" by John Cameron Mitchell will appear at some point, although it feels like I've been writing about it for years. That one dares to include explicit gay sex. Given the 2257 regulation changes that alter the definition of a "secondary producer," you have to wonder if exhibitors showing "9 Songs" are carrying proof of age identification and model releases on Ms. Stilley and Mr. O'Brien...
4.) NakedSword.com has undergone a redesign. Apart from having the good taste to run this column, they've streamlined their look around a stylized sword design. Erotic soap opera WET PALMS is linked through Naked Sword, by the way. Right now they're heavily promoting Jenna Jameson's appearance on "The Tim and Roma Show," an online talkfest anchored by Sister Roma (of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence) and Naked Sword's Tim Valenti.

It's a holiday week and the "Adams Report" staff are kicking back, moisturizing their chafed hands and resting their tired eyeballs. While they relax, I've been in production on my fourth skin flick, an as-yet-untitled younger-guy pic for RAD Video. In the meantime, everyone's busy porning up Southern California as they film their winter slate of films. On the final day of shooting, I caught my stills photographer Drew Warner dashing off the set. I asked where he was going. "Jeremy Spencer from Adonis Pictures is here to borrow the fuck machine in the back of my truck," he said. "They're waiting for it on his set!" Just another day in GayPornLand!
All Worlds Video says my last flick, SEX WITH STRANGERS, will be available in a month or so. Stay tuned to Allworldsvideo.com for details. The RAD Video flick features a downy-cheeked eighteen-year-old newcomer (Trevor No-Last-Name-Yet), three relative newbies (Caleb Carter, Jason Longh, Brett Matthews), one of my fave performers (Corbin Michaels) and rising star Jason Crew. It will be released in a few months, and RADvideo.com will have the scoop. I'll also probably mention it in this space once or twice...
Finally, as we lollygag in the Dept. of Self Promotion, I am pleased to announce that I am taking over as the editor of "XXX Showcase" magazine and the industry bible, the Adam Gay Video Directory (both are Knight Publishing entities). My good friend lo these many years, Doug Lawrence, has since 2003 edited "XXX Showcase" and the AGVD and the GAYVN section of "Adult Video News," goddess bless him. He's decided to focus his attention solely on the GAYVN mag and GAYVN.com. I take the reins with the October issue of "Showcase" and the upcoming edition of the AGVD, which will hit shelves in time for Christmas. As I told GAYVN.com, Mr. Lawrence has set a very high standard of excellence that I plan to maintain.
DEATH BY FEATHERS
Kudos to Falcon Studios for the fine promotional package touting HEAVEN TO HELL (d. Chi Chi LaRue). The box included a candle and a gorgeous handmade promotional booklet filled with drawings penned by a Falcon artiste (many of which can be seen on the DVD for HEAVEN TO HELL). As Constant Readers know, the film details the sullying of a pure angel (a white-feathered Brad Patton) by a raunchy demon (Dean Monroe and his black-feathered minions). However, when I opened the box, a cloud of tiny black and white feathers exploded into the air. I nearly choked to death, which I presume was not the intention of the Falcon publicity department (at least, I hope it wasn't...)
WET PALMS WRAPS WITH A BANG
Jet Set Team Productions wrapped filming on WET PALMS 7-9 at the Abbey restaurant/bar in West Hollywood with a big shindig that included the cast and dozens of partygoers, all of it captured on tape to be shown in the final moments of the last episode. But it wouldn't be a soap opera without a cliffhanger, right? The WET PALMS creative team dramatically killed one of the cast members without revealing who bites the dust. We'll have to wait until the fall for the answers. I'm reminded of Snoopy writing his Great American Novel: "It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly, a shot rang out! A door slammed! The maid screamed!" Anyway, the WET PALMS scripts are penned by Jack Shamama and Michael Stabile.

Anyway, WET PALMS 4-6 (Marina Pacific Distribution) has spent four weeks firmly atop the JRL Top 50 Gay Rentals Chart, and is pretty much a lock to recapture the wins WET PALMS 1-3 snagged at the GAYVN and Grabby Awards this year. It's a holiday week and the "Adams Report" staff are kicking back, moisturizing their chafed hands and resting their tired eyeballs. While they relax, I've been in production on my fourth skin flick, an as-yet-untitled younger-guy pic for RAD Video. In the meantime, everyone's busy porning up Southern California as they film their winter slate of films. On the final day of shooting, I caught my stills photographer Drew Warner dashing off the set. I asked where he was going. "Jeremy Spencer from Adonis Pictures is here to borrow the fuck machine in the back of my truck," he said. "They're waiting for it on his set!" Just another day in GayPornLand!
All Worlds Video says my last flick, SEX WITH STRANGERS, will be available in a month or so. Stay tuned to Allworldsvideo.com for details. The RAD Video flick features a downy-cheeked eighteen-year-old newcomer (Trevor No-Last-Name-Yet), three relative newbies (Caleb Carter, Jason Longh, Brett Matthews), one of my fave performers (Corbin Michaels) and rising star Jason Crew. It will be released in a few months, and RADvideo.com will have the scoop. I'll also probably mention it in this space once or twice...
Finally, as we lollygag in the Dept. of Self Promotion, I am pleased to announce that I am taking over as the editor of "XXX Showcase" magazine and the industry bible, the Adam Gay Video Directory (both are Knight Publishing entities). My good friend lo these many years, Doug Lawrence, has since 2003 edited "XXX Showcase" and the AGVD and the GAYVN section of "Adult Video News," goddess bless him. He's decided to focus his attention solely on the GAYVN mag and GAYVN.com. I take the reins with the October issue of "Showcase" and the upcoming edition of the AGVD, which will hit shelves in time for Christmas. As I told GAYVN.com, Mr. Lawrence has set a very high standard of excellence that I plan to maintain.
DEATH BY FEATHERS
Kudos to Falcon Studios for the fine promotional package touting HEAVEN TO HELL (d. Chi Chi LaRue). The box included a candle and a gorgeous handmade promotional booklet filled with drawings penned by a Falcon artiste (many of which can be seen on the DVD for HEAVEN TO HELL). As Constant Readers know, the film details the sullying of a pure angel (a white-feathered Brad Patton) by a raunchy demon (Dean Monroe and his black-feathered minions). However, when I opened the box, a cloud of tiny black and white feathers exploded into the air. I nearly choked to death, which I presume was not the intention of the Falcon publicity department (at least, I hope it wasn't...)
WET PALMS WRAPS WITH A BANG
Jet Set Team Productions wrapped filming on WET PALMS 7-9 at the Abbey restaurant/bar in West Hollywood with a big shindig that included the cast and dozens of partygoers, all of it captured on tape to be shown in the final moments of the last episode. But it wouldn't be a soap opera without a cliffhanger, right? The WET PALMS creative team dramatically killed one of the cast members without revealing who bites the dust. We'll have to wait until the fall for the answers. I'm reminded of Snoopy writing his Great American Novel: "It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly, a shot rang out! A door slammed! The maid screamed!" Anyway, the WET PALMS scripts are penned by Jack Shamama and Michael Stabile.

Anyway, WET PALMS 4-6 (Marina Pacific Distribution) has spent four weeks firmly atop the JRL Top 50 Gay Rentals Chart, and is pretty much a lock to recapture the wins WET PALMS 1-3 snagged at the GAYVN and Grabby Awards this year.
