For this final "Adams Report" of 2004 I want to take a moment and thank each and every reader, performer and industryite for their support. We wouldn't be the same without you. Thank you for seeing this scrappy column through another rambunctious year.
As we take a look at the year in porn as covered by the "Adams Report," January 2004 brought an interview with legendary director Jerry Douglas as he prepared to film BUCKLEROOS (the year ended with a lavish Premium Collector's Edition DVD of the hit flick), as well as the induction of Sharon Mitchell and Jeff Stryker into the Hustler Hollywood Porn Walk of Fame, the unmasking of the latest reality show contestant to have softcore porn on their resume (Kristi Frank of "The Apprentice") and further evidence of the mainstreaming of porn with the appearance of rap and hip-hop stars (50 Cent, Lil' John) at the Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas.
The very end of January featured an in-store promotional event for Big Blue Productions at the usually hetero Hustler Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard. As I wrote then, "[Blue] Blake and three brace of his Big Blue stars were in attendance to sign autographs and press the flesh: Caesar, Ben Campezi, Tony Cage, Jason Hawke, Jim Slade and Tony Valentino... Mr. Blake earned a cheer when he introduced Jim Slade by way of his now-infamous double penetration in MUSCLE PENITENTIARY ('Only at a porn party could I mention the words 'double penetration' and get applause!')."
In February, long-retired Ace Harden was spotted in WeHo and Zak Spears enthused about a series of career-best performances in Massive Studio's HARD COPS and Falcon's ZAK ATTACK. (His BUCKLEROOS gig was forthcoming.) Speaking of porn veterans doing scorching work, Colt Studio's HOG: THE LEATHER FILE featured insatiable bottom Derek Cameron anchoring a nine-man orgy, including a stunning double-penetration from Leo Bramm and Hal Rodman.
Also in February, retired superhunk Colton Ford debuted at No. 44 on the "Billboard" magazine Hot Dance/Club Play chart with a cover of "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" (a duet with Pepper Mashay). It would eventually climb to the upper reaches of the chart, just as a documentary featuring Mr. Colton and Blake Harper, NAKED FAME (Regent Releasing), was preparing to hit the gay film festival circuit.
In February, the GAYVN announcements delivered a whopping ten nominations to THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD. It went on to claim five of the seven trophies won this year by All Worlds Video, including Best Screenplay (Rick Tugger), Music (Gian Franco) and Non-Sex Performance (Rowdy Carson), in a repeat of the same wins in the same categories, by the same people, one year earlier for MSR's WHITE TRASH. Jet Set's THE HOLE was right behind with nine nominations and five wins, including Best Gay Video and a third citation for Wash West as Best Director.
Other notable GAYVN wins: Chad Hunt's dual trophies (the only such feat this year) for Best Oral Scene and Group Scene in Rascal Video's DETENTION: ORAL EXAMS 2; wild cheers accompanied the popular Brad Benton's win as Best Supporting Actor in THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD, his first triumph after thirteen nominations in various categories since his debut several years ago; and Michael Soldier's well-deserved win as Best Actor for Raging Stallion's A PORN STAR IS BORN.
Newcomer Joe Foster led all performers with a jaw-stretching seven nominations: Best Newcomer and Actor, Best Sex Scene, Threesome and two nods for Group Scene. Mr. Foster would take home only one trophy, however, but it was the top award of the night: Performer of the Year.
As I wrote, Hall of Fame inductees were "performers Tom Chase and Kurt Young, videographer Todd Montgomery (of Falcon fame) and director/producers Barry Knight and Russell Moore, whose involvement with gay adult entertainment stretches back twenty-five years, first with Jaguar Productions and now of course as Delta Video."
In March, Titan Media announced a pay-per-view and licensing distribution deal with Arrivo on Demand/UGV Europe that has the potential to put Titan into 12 million European Union households. This was just one mighty tremor that shook the gay porn distribution landscape in 2004.
Also this month, I finally noticed Raging Stallion Studios had named Shane Rollins their 2004 Man of the Year. RSS soon stoked a fiery debate with the announcement that their POKIN' IN THE BOYS ROOM would feature oral cumshots. As I wrote, "Raging Stallion notes that 'other studios' have filmed 'furtive oral cum shots' in their own videos, but 'no one since the 1980s has made swallowing a load of white hot cum the focus of a high-budget, superstar-studded, top-of-the-line production.'" On March 11th, after they picked up a GAYVN trophy for Best Threesome (for GAY DREAMS), hostess Chi Chi LaRue needled the RSS table by cracking, "Any cum swallowing going on over there?"
The busy bees at Titan soon announced to great fanfare a "strategic licensing agreement" with George Duroy's Bel Ami to "license, manufacture and distribute" for retail the Bel Ami line of videos and DVDs in the United States. That deal would crumble apart within weeks. In the meantime, Falcon sold off their Hot Hands fisting line (which produced seven titles) to Hot House Entertainment, then signed a large licensing deal with Village Lighthouse "to produce a variety of Falcon products including greeting cards, magnets and posters," and continued the gay porn surge into Europe by forming a partnership with Dusedo-M.O.I. to exclusively distribute the Falcon Studios line in Northern Europe (every country from the Netherlands to Belgium, Germany to Iceland).
March also brought a remarkable love letter to Jeff Stryker, penned by none other than comedian Margaret Cho on her blog, after he sent Ms. Cho one of his Jeff Stryker Action Figures. But the biggest news of 2004, and the most shocking, was the heart attack suffered by directrix Chi Chi LaRue.
Here's what I wrote in the column after Ms. LaRue was released from the hospital: "'I went to the doctor's for a checkup,' Ms. LaRue explain[ed], 'they did some tests, then came back and told me they had to do some other tests. Then my doctor told me to check into the hospital right away.' It turns out the tests had uncovered an arterial blockage in Ms. LaRue's heart. A stint was inserted into the clogged artery to increase blood flow (similar to an angioplasty in which a balloon is used to expand the artery) and after several days' recovery in a hospital bed, the directrix was sent home... 'Look, my doctor told me I dodged a bullet. And he's right... This was a wake-up call, a huge one. And I heard it!'"

I spent a recent Sunday in a warehouse in Boyle Heights near downtown Los Angeles. Think small factories belching white smoke, rusted-out abandoned cars, freeway overpasses and lots of crumbling grey concrete spray-painted with fading gang symbols, not to mention the omnipresent stench of exhaust fumes. A dicey neighborhood, yeah, but the warehouse is comfortably outfitted for film production (it's owned by straight porn starlet Jill Ireland and her husband). It was here that directrix Chi Chi LaRue filmed her final video for Falcon Studios.
I spent the day with Brad Patton, Joe Sport, Josh Weston and the Falcon crew: veteran videographer Max Phillips, camera assistant (and cast member) Colby Taylor, makeup mavens Domini and Spike, still photographer Greg Lenzman, set designer Bradley Pickleshimer and other crew, including editrix Fay Dubois who was filming a behind-the-scenes featurette for the DVD.
I was the only press person allowed on-set to watch Brad Patton's first on-camera deflowering. As the day progressed, I talked to Colby Taylor about his return to porn, and discovered that Josh Weston loves dogs and has quite a literate sense of humor (when asked about his Christmas plans, he replied, "I'll be sitting home alone reading Sylvia Plath.") Joe Sport is kind of shy and is a Brit although everyone mistakes his accent for Australian roots. Falcon didn't mind my discussing any of this stuff publicly, but the toughest bit of news to keep under my hat was Ms. LaRue's decision to make this film, a lavish production titled HEAVEN TO HELL and featuring a cast made up entirely of Falcon exclusives, her last for the venerable studio.
On Friday, December 17th Ms. LaRue went public with the news. S/he had told me earlier that it was perhaps the hardest decision of her sixteen-year directing career. Her heart attack last spring was a precipitating factor in the decision. "It was time to devote all of my energies to Rascal Video and Channel 1 Releasing," she told me. "Falcon has been like my family for most of my career. But Rascal is my own company and it's time for me to devote all my energy to nurturing it."
For their part, Falcon is reluctantly sending off Ms. LaRue with their good wishes. And I'll have more secrets from the HEAVEN TO HELL set next week.
BEST NEWCOMER AND PERFORMER OF THE YEAR
A few weeks ago I began collecting nominations for 2004's Best Newcomer and Performer of the Year. I still haven't decided if we will crown our own winner here at the "Adams Report" world headquarters, but these lists will certainly help the "Adult Video News" GAYVN and "Gay Chicago" Grabby judges focus their attention.
Anyway, after I published the early, by-no-means-complete preliminary lists, right on cue I was gently castigated (via e-mail) by no less than six people for not including certain names on the list. RSS is somewhat known for shepherding select models as they launch their own lines: Monster Bang (a genuine hit from Michael Brandon) and Golden Boy Productions (a fizzle from the now-retired Sky Donovan) are two recent examples.
Sayeth the press release: "The debut video from Andy Dill merges the gonzo style of reality porn with the high production values of Raging Stallion Studios. You're there with Andy as he hoists the camera on his muscular shoulders and aims it at a gang of raunchy, sex-hungry, cum-filled muscle studs."
BEDROCK is the title. Hardworking newcummer Fredrick Ford and Wilson Lake, another newbie, are featured in scene one. Andy Dill and mononamed Linus ravage Damien Drake ("only months away from [losing] his virginity") in scene two. Buff African-American hunk Jay Black is paired with freckled, red-haired twinky muffin Blu Kennedy in scene three. The fourth and final scene puts together piggy Joshua Adams and Luke Bronson. On Friday, December 17th Ms. LaRue went public with the news. S/he had told me earlier that it was perhaps the hardest decision of her sixteen-year directing career. Her heart attack last spring was a precipitating factor in the decision. "It was time to devote all of my energies to Rascal Video and Channel 1 Releasing," she told me. "Falcon has been like my family for most of my career. But Rascal is my own company and it's time for me to devote all my energy to nurturing it."
For their part, Falcon is reluctantly sending off Ms. LaRue with their good wishes. And I'll have more secrets from the HEAVEN TO HELL set next week.
BEST NEWCOMER AND PERFORMER OF THE YEAR
A few weeks ago I began collecting nominations for 2004's Best Newcomer and Performer of the Year. I still haven't decided if we will crown our own winner here at the "Adams Report" world headquarters, but these lists will certainly help the "Adult Video News" GAYVN and "Gay Chicago" Grabby judges focus their attention.
Anyway, after I published the early, by-no-means-complete preliminary lists, right on cue I was gently castigated (via e-mail) by no less than six people for not including certain names on the list. My week started off as well as it could for someone who writes about gay porn for a living. The phone rang on a chilly, rainy Monday evening. It was directrix Chi Chi LaRue. "Girl, you hit the jackpot," s/he yelled. "Come outside!" I duly traipsed downstairs and there was Ms. LaRue with a copy of STR8 SHOTS, an upcoming release from her Rascal Video and Channel 1 Releasing. Guess who's on the cover? Julian, the mega-hot straight porn stud. Guess who else is in the video? Fellow hetero hunks Franco Del Toro, Kurt Lockwood, Rick Pirelles, Mario Rossi, Peter Shaft, Pascal St. James and Voodoo. When Mr. Lucas approached Boy George about contributing music to the production, the singer provided a CD of songs and Mr. Lucas chose one track to play on a radio at the beginning of the film. "It really sets the mood for the movie," said MANHATTAN HEAT writer/editor Tony Dimarco, "showcasing the beat of the city and the heat of summer all in one."

We're in the closing days of 2004, believe it or not, and it's that time again to look at potential Performer of the Year and Best Newcomer nominees for the "Adult Video News" GAYVN and "Gay Chicago" Grabby contenders. I'm still debating whether to give our annual "Adams Report" Reader's Poll a year off, but please share your opinions, via the e-mail address at the end of this column, about which skin studs spurted their way into your heart, and all over your good Target sheets, this calendar year.
I'll get things started: By midyear we had a few surefire Performer nominees, among them Tag Adams, Brad Benton, Rick Gonzales, Kent Larson, Gus Mattox, Arpad Miklos, Marco Paris and Mario Ortiz. If Tag Adams is not a nominee for either a GAYVN or a Grabby, then there's no reason to do these things. Find me a guy who gave it up this year more frequently, or with more genuine panache.
As for the Newcomers, a quick list off the top of my head would include Fredrick Ford, Jan Fischer, Kyle Lewis, Gus Mattox (my early pick for the winner), Eddie Stone, Robert Van Damme and Bobby Williams.

"A romantic and dramatic story about a European boy falling in love with a Cuban boy while visiting Havana," says the box copy. "The realities of this beautiful, but sadly suppressed communist island interfere in their dream." I have no doubt love (or at least steamy sex) prevails in the end. The films were co-directed by Steve Cadro and Ginetto Di Masolo, which would seem a mite difficult given that Mr. Cadro died in March, 2000. This is not new stuff but "remastered archival footage" from AMG founder Bob Mizer’s ‘80s solo J.O. series. Mr. Mizer died in 1992 and it's good to see his hard work being introduced to a new generation of horndogs. We're in the closing days of 2004, believe it or not, and it's that time again to look at potential Performer of the Year and Best Newcomer nominees for the "Adult Video News" GAYVN and "Gay Chicago" Grabby contenders. I'm still debating whether to give our annual "Adams Report" Reader's Poll a year off, but please share your opinions, via the e-mail address at the end of this column, about which skin studs spurted their way into your heart, and all over your good Target sheets, this calendar year.
I'll get things started: By midyear we had a few surefire Performer nominees, among them Tag Adams, Brad Benton, Rick Gonzales, Kent Larson, Gus Mattox, Arpad Miklos, Marco Paris and Mario Ortiz. If Tag Adams is not a nominee for either a GAYVN or a Grabby, then there's no reason to do these things. Find me a guy who gave it up this year more frequently, or with more genuine panache.
As for the Newcomers, a quick list off the top of my head would include Fredrick Ford, Jan Fischer, Kyle Lewis, Gus Mattox (my early pick for the winner), Eddie Stone, Robert Van Damme and Bobby Williams.
Jason Ridge and Joe Foster are the current GAYVN Best Newcomer and Performer of the Year recipients, while at this year's Grabby ceremony Tag Adams and Tag Eriksson were crowned Best Newcomers; Trent Atkins and Brad Benton were the Performers of the Year.

Arena Entertainment and Cadro Films have imports CUBA LIBRE I and II on tap. "A romantic and dramatic story about a European boy falling in love with a Cuban boy while visiting Havana," says the box copy. "The realities of this beautiful, but sadly suppressed communist island interfere in their dream." I have no doubt love (or at least steamy sex) prevails in the end. The films were co-directed by Steve Cadro and Ginetto Di Masolo, which would seem a mite difficult given that Mr. Cadro died in March, 2000. The one-sheet describes CUBA LIBRE as the first of "four new titles from the Cadro vaults," so perhaps these were unfinished or unreleased at the time of Mr. Cadro's death.
